Stihl AP 300 Battery

Ive had three Sthil batterys and all died between 13 months old to 4 years old. They have had little use. Possibly they may be fine if you use them very often but beware if you think using professional battery's for home use means they will last a long time.
Good battery but terrible life expectancy. Supposedly 600 charges, yet we've had less than 60 charges and it's done for. That's shocking!! And the exhorbitant price does not reflect the life and quality required.
Battery is at end of life just after warranty expires for the second time – This is my second battery which stopped working after two years and outside of warranty. I wonder if there is some sort of date expiry for low users like myself in the battery management system. I'm a home user with low usage 1-4 charges per month depending on the season. I do not leave it on charge and rarely run it flat. I have two tools in… Read more
which I use the AP 300 S battery. I also have lots of other lithium items like torches and phones that are more than 5 years old and still can be charged and are used daily.
The Stihl battery management system means you can not find the defective cell and fix it yourself.
Stihl AP300 battery set fire to our house – Our house caught fire when a Stihl AP300 battery exploded. We had problems with a fault in our original AP300 battery and were given a discount to purchase another. In hindsight should have been a consumer guarantee warranty as it was only a month or so out of warranty but Stihl company would not do it. This battery then exploded and set fire to… Read more
our home. It was NOT on the charger at the time and was only a few months old. It was at about 50% charge. Just sitting on a bench. Be warned. Very dangerous. Forensics have proven every switch was off in our garage. 4 huge explosions from this battery. It was used a few times in a mower. Over 2 years on and we are still waiting for Stihl to accept responsibility for the failure of their product.
AP300S battery dead after 2 years – I bought a Stihl RMA 510 V S/P Battery Mower with a AP300S battery and charger from Stihl in Capalaba, Queensland, Australia in Jan 2022, now its Jan 2024. Now the Battery will not charge in the charger (only one LED lights up), I took it to the Stihl shop where they tested it and they said the battery was dead. This mower has only been used about… Read more
20 times and is kept in a closed shed when not in use. At AUD$325 for a battery is not so economical.
Stihl LiPo battery packs DO last, but never allow to go fully flat – I'm an electrical engineer, who bought Stihl pole-saw, brushcutter & self-propelled 51cm-wide mower, each of which use use single interchangeable AP300 battery, charged in AL300 charger. The whole collection has worked flawlessly for the five years since purchase. Stihl gear is well-designed and works as intended. I had previously had Stihl petrol… Read more
brushcutters at my farm, but switching to battery avoids all those problems with keeping internal combustion engines tuned and ensuring the petrol does not turn to sludge (add Sta-Bil fuel conditioner)...
I've bought a lot of LiPo batteries over the years, for various projects, including converting a Prius Mk1 from NiMH to LiPo. Generic Chinese 18650 LiPo cells are 'highly variable' in their specs, quality and life, to say the least. You get the feeling that the eBay vendors are selling the cells that failed QA at the factory. But Panasonic and other leading brands are reliable, but much more expensive. I'm about to replace the original Chinese battery in my 6yo e-bike with two AP300s packs (wired in-series for 72v), as one is paying Stihl roughly A$1,000 per kWh (as roughly A$300 for 300Wh packs), so in my view, it is not too much of a premium to have a leading German brand 'certify' the quality of the cells. And the Stihl cells meet their disclosed storage specs - my Stihl lawnmower still cuts solidly for half-an-hour per charge, using the 5yo AP300.
But let me say, LiPo batteries are best stored away 50-90% charged, and recharged every 3-6 months to avoid becoming 'flat'. I suspect the person on this chat who said his battery was 6yo and 'only used 4 times', but is now faulty, I'll bet he allowed the battery to be 'stored away' for too long between charging. You can leave a AP300 or AP300s in the fast charger (AL300) 'forever'. Charger will bring it up to a high percentage (hopefully not really the 105-110% LiPo max). Then if you still haven't used the battery after 3-6 months, pull battery out of charger, then re-insert it into charger, and AL300 will bring AP300 back up to charge. LiPo does not have high rate of self-discharge (like earlier lead-acid or NiMH batteries), but it will still go flat over time... My battery has sat in powered-on AL300 charger for its whole 5yr life without any problem. The Stihl charger is 'smart' so drops to 'trickle' charge, so you can leave battery in charger 'forever'.
For the record, I have no financial or other association with Stihl, other than as customer. And if you look at my other reviews, you'll see I can be harsh where products perform poorly.
Just the best battery out there – I've got various Stihl battery equipment - two hedgers, blower, pole saw and a chainsaw. These batteries AP300 batteries have served me very well and have no signs of letting me down after a couple of years now. In fact - I just bought my first AP300S, which has 281Wh vs the 227Wh of the AP300. The AP300 is 1.7kg and the AP300S is 1.8kg. Lets hope it performs as well as the AP300 originals :) Show details
Do not buy – Purchased a stihl ap300 battery, charger and polesaw in 2016 ($1150) have only used them 3 times and the battery will not charge. Absolute garbage product and service from stihl Australia Show details
