Size does matter - Stihl FSA 45 Disappointing Whipper Snipper
I have always used Stihl for my yard work. I downsized from the big Brushcutter as I am on a 320sqm small block now and I find the FSA45 just so useless. Battery life is so limited like 30 mins, the blades break or wear down very easily as does the cutting runner which seems to break all the time.
You are supposed to be able to trim the paths, well that does not work as the blades just break of wear down to easily.
I would no recommend to anyone and I am going to write it off as a bad purchase and buy the next couple of models up which has a bit more power. I am so sorry that I sold my Brushcutter now but it was big to use.
Purchased in April 2020 for $199.00.
Great suits my needs!
This is a lightweight, easy to use whipper snipper. Takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge and it lasted for about 22 mins for me, which was enough time to do the front and the back yard. I didn't have to change any blades on my first usage but I will do so for the next usage as I was doing a fair bit of edging and it was overgrown and I am still not used to the machine. I love how easy this machine is to use. no more line to thread.
Purchased in October 2020 at Maddington Mower and Saws for $179.00.
good machine till the vibration started motor bearing dealer said nothing wrong will try and replace the bearing myself if not i will buy a new one of the same i like this machine it is very light in weight
Purchased in May 2018 for $159.00.
good - lightweight , charges fast , suitable for small gardens, easy to change blades
bad - plastic blades break easily , line also the same and need to manually cut and fit it as per correct length or else it hits the tip of the guard and breaks off too .
Not worth a buy.
Purchased in August 2020 for $199.00.

Suits me, won’t suit everyone
We have a 24 perch block in suburbia and we attend to our lawns very regularly, so it never gets overgrown. This is the first cordless electric trimmer I have used, previously owned a corded trimmer. This appliance does not have a bump-head line feed, instead you trim 11cm nylon line lengths and insert them into the spinner, or alternatively use a pair of disposable plastic blades which are the better option for cutting in the horizontal plane when the blade tips will not be contacting a hard object like a fence or a wall. Changing between blad...es and line or installing new line just takes a few moments but sure, it’s not as convenient as the usual bump-head type. Summarising the other disadvantages first, this is certainly no brush-cutter, and trimming thick or tough grass and vegetation will be slow and quickly drain the battery charge. The battery is internal, so there can be no replacement battery on hand to get back on with the job if you lose charge, you have to wait for the unit to recharge (maybe 40 mins?). At times of robust growth after (rare!) rain I don’t get my whole yard done on a single charge. The advantages (which have won me over) are that it is amazingly light to hold and quiet to use. It has a telescopic shaft (which I never adjust actually) and a pivoting head for cutting vertically. The system of a circuit plug to install and three buttons/levers to press simultaneously is not awkward to operate but would confound youngsters so that is a good safety feature. I have no regrets about this purchase.
Questions & Answers
do they have bearing problems with light use?
Sorry, don’t understand your question
Wondering how long, on average, does the battery last? Do you get the expected 20 minutes? Thanks.
I guess so... of course you are continually triggering the motor on and off, and I wonder if they are saying 20 mins of continuous running time? It would depend on the load on the motor. It won’t last long if you’re cutting thick long grass, but I don’t let the grass get out of control. Sorry I can’t be more specific, I’ll take note of time with my next use....
Thanks for the reply, Pokky. I’ll just be using it for edging the lawn myself, so hoping to get at least the 20 minutes I think I’ll need for my yard.
