Not the worst but not the greatest. If your looking for a whiskey for your first try I wouldn’t recommend this one
From the same Distillery there are much better – For me the first purchase and taste of "The Glenlivet" was the 12 Year Old. That was about fifteen years ago. Prior to that it had been Johnny Walker Green Label or Black, but I was never fully satisfied, so the change over to "The Glenlivet". Since then I've probably had half a dozen of the 12 Year Old. so I started buying others from the same Distillery. The first was The 15 Year Old, The French Oak Reserve, which fulfilled all my expectations. However, I tried a few more, The Nadurra Oloroso, The Master Distiller's Reserve, The Founder's Reserve and The Nadurra First Fill. In the order of preference, however, I always return to the The French Oak Reserve. What is slightly disagreeable (only minutely) about the 12 Year Old is that it's not as good as any of the others mentioned, and I can't drink it neat or with a small chunk of ice, whereas all the others, I can. The taste after the first shock is agreeable and the after-taste is very good, but it's that first shock as it hits the back of the mouth, that differentiates it from all the others.
Unimpressive single malt – Bought this once by mistake thinking it was Glenfiddich. I was not impressed as a single malt.Glen Moray is better , I feel ,and cheaper. A good scotch will warm the mouth , NOT burn the throat , and warm the belly.I just did not like the flavour too much. Not too much really , not to my taste. Over priced to my mind.
My favourite regular single malt – A well rounded drink that I enjoy neat or with ice. It warms the heart and the throat. In cool months we enjoy this as an aperitif. Reasonably priced. I much prefer this to Johnny Walker Red, Black or Gold. Since the Glenlivet is much less pricey than JW Gold it beats it hands down in my book. Glenlivet 12 year and Glenfiddich are this writers two… Read more
favorite scotches for normal consumption. On special occasions we break out the 18YO. However, the 12 YO is affordable and enjoyable. A good well rounded and smooth flavour.
