TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda Grass

If you are wanting a lawn that needs mowing three times a week in summer and you can’t mulch it because it just sits on top, so we get clipping all through the house. We ended up buying a robotic mower, and mow it every day. It does feel great underfoot, and looks good, but it is a hard work lawn. Worst decision we made with our new house was putting tiftuf down. Worst lawn ever. The only time it's looked good was just after it was laid. If a sparrow farts nearby, it all turns brown. Unless you're a professional grounds keeper, choose something less fussy. Show details
Do not buy it! This grass is ground hogs day disaster with no happy ending! – This is the worst grass ever. Save your time, money, water and above all your sanity. Our old grass was full of weeds so we researched lawn products and came across TifTuf marketed as beautiful lawn, dense, low maintenance, requiring less water and drought tolerant. So 5 years ago we replaced our huge backyard with TifTuf. It has been a disaster… Read more
ever since. What was marketed could not be any further from the truth. It is the absolute opposite. It is high maintenance, our water bill has tripled and it is still brown. It is not dense, but patchy. The roots are brown and as the recommendation is to mow it weekly, the lawn is permanently brown. Every time we contact Lawn Solutions, their standard answer is to mow it, to fertilise it and to water it. We have done all this and more over and over and over again. We even replaced sections with more (yes they have done this very well. No seeds for this grass. You have to keep on buying grass patches from Lawn Solutions including the delivery fee). This grass will drive you round the twist. We even regret the old grass. We never had to water it, it got brown during drought, but turned green as soon as it rained. TifTuf us guaranteed bad in summer, bad in winter, bad all year round. We can’t redo our back yard. It would be too expensive. So we are stuck with it. It should be removed from the market and never be sold again.
Tif tuf bermuda = TifWEAK – Definitely do not recommend for Southern Highlands NSW. Swayed by the low water/low maintenance part and it looked good until the first couple of frosts. Now it's yellow and possibly dead. Will it come back? Time will tell but we will top dress and scatter grass seeds over it after winter. Show details
Don’t get TifTuf, don’t do it!! – Sorry, this grass will eventually become terrible. But it looked so great at the grass farm at western Sydney where they pamper it to perfection.. In Sydney this grass is not worth it, do not buy. Just get Sit Walter. After several years this grass just gets worse and worse.. and worse. I like to mow my lawn and was watering it with a water tank… Read more
and sprinkler. But for a working family there is just too much maintenance to upkeep it. Eventually it will become weak, weeds will fully overtake it, until you don’t see any tif tuf at all. And I spent $$ on weed killer and fertiliser. So within 5 years after purchase the grass it completely lost, I am mowing weeds front and back. My neighbour who put in Sit Walter a year before me, has the same level of sunlight and conditions, still has a good respectable lawn and doesn’t need to tend to it all the time. I will be completely starting again, strip it back to nothing, and will be laying Sir Walter, it will be so good. So what about the “10 year warranty” how ridiculous, what does that even mean for grass?! Would you have to prove how much attention was given to the upkeep of the grass? Who knows, maybe I should ask. But please, don’t waste your precious time and money with Tif Tuf, it is not tough at all.
Ok if you want to baby it – We were told it's tough and used on sports fields. Low maintenance and can take a hiding. In hindsight, I imagine sports fields are very well maintained and get constant attention. Normal watering and mowing isn't enough. Weeds came up through it constantly and the nut grass is crazy. Top that off with a lawn grub invasion that has almost… Read more
completely wiped it out. No choice but to use lots of sprays and chemicals. Give me the el cheapo winter green like we have in the footpath. Ten years and haven't had to do anything to it. Not impressed.
So far so yeah – Narrow soft leaves that feel lovely and look lush. My pallet arrived early and 2hrs later I had lawn!! Having raked and re levelled just prior to laying my lawn slabs I will say this to other beginners. Do that the day before and water your dirt so that a crust forms. That way dirt won't move as you drag slabs over it and your finished product… Read more
will likely appear more level. The pieces aren't cut perfectly so lawns do need top dressing at some point. Tif Tuf handles shade, under and over watering, a dog, and so far it's been a winner.
Zoysia much better – We put this down a couple of years ago and followed the sod company’s recommendation on how to install and maintain. The salesman that looked at our yard said this would work well in shaded areas and it would spread like the Zoysia we already have in part of the yard. We are extremely disappointed here in Western North Carolina. Save your money… Read more
and go with Zoysia. It’s a much better product. We are waiting for the Zoysia to over take this puny grass. Sadly, we feel like we wasted about $3500.00. We purchased this from Super Sod in North Carolina.
It is definately the best lawn i have ever put in – It is definitely the best lawn I have ever put in……extremely thick, plush, and so comfortable to walk or even lay on…. Although it does require frequent watering, and mowing, particularly in the summer…… Had been supplied a few brown lengths of turf when I first laid it, but that soon grew to be ok. Have not yet experienced what it will be like in winter. But from the time it was laid to now …Oct 18 to Jan 19…its been fantastic.
This TifTuf lawn grass was a total surprise – I spent some time looking for a grass that was drought resistant, weed resistant and shade resistant. I already have some Sir Walter in the backyard and while it's okay, weeds and lack of water saw it looking a little sad. What fascinated me was that this new grass, trying to break into a competitive market was even more expensive than Sir Walter… Read more
- the top of the range.
I thought, that's a brave call!
Having just spent close to $20k on our street presence with a new/old hardwood timber fence (we brought in a portable mill and cut down old ironbark wharf piers) on our riverfront property, I wanted something different.
I had read the following, 'TifTuf Bermuda is the product of almost 25 years of research and development from one of the worlds leading turf grass breeders, the University of Georgia. TifTuf has been hand selected out of almost 30,000 different Bermuda varieties, showing superior qualities in drought tolerance, shade tolerance, wear tolerance and winter colour whilst at the same time maintaining excellent turf quality.'
What I particularly liked was that unlike Sir Walter that is a broadleaf buffalo grass, TifTuf has a fine leaf like couch like grass. There was little in the way of reviews so I thought I would take the plunge and see if the marketing hype was ... well just that.
So we planted it in late summer and here we are in spring. It took very well - mind you, we excavated the top 10cm and replaced it with premium top soil and fertilizer.
Now as I look at it 6 months later, I'm surprised by the fact that it has not needed mowing for the last 2 months and it's done something weird. Instead of growing up it has thickened - to a height of around 5cm. Our neighbour's couch (on both sides) has needed mowing and, with little winter rain, is looking a little brown.
I'm a bit stunned.
For the record, I have no allegiance to the product (I'm a medico).
So we have grass that is weed resistance (a few needed to be pulled early on), drought resistant, shade resistant (under a row of palm trees on the south of the 6' fence). Then, instead of growing up and needing mowing, it just gets thicker! It's mid-September now so I expect to need to mow it in the next month or so ... maybe.
I'm so impressed I felt compelled to write this review as I know that the majority of reviews are inspired by a lack of satisfaction.
