Weber Style 6742 Thermometer Questions & Answers
VerifiedI too can confirm the same problem. always looked after the 6742 thermometer - stored it when not in use with no batteries. Blue screen and not responsive. Expensive and useless. - even with weaker batteries and I have tried several levels of "power", tested with a Jaycar battery tester. Sorry Weber, will not risk the newer models
Hi Tony Thank you for reaching out, we are sorry to hear that you have had a negative experience with your thermometer. This is quite an old model, our technology has improved tenfold. Especially with the connect capabilities you can track everything on your phone. Please let us know if you have any further questions
I too have one of these wonderful pieces of garbage. Mine was "brand new" in the box. Never used. Went to use it today. Apparently it shipped with batteries. Those were dead. Changed to new batteries. Display is lit with all LCD segments turned on. Nice.
Useless like mine. I got a couple of uses out of it by using batteries that were partially depleted!!!! Then even that wouldn't work. Weber were not interested..... just told me they now had a new model. Cheeky
Hi Thomas Thanks for your feedback and sorry to hear that you've not had a great experience with this thermometer. Unfortunately, as this is an older, obsolete model that has been superseded with models that are much more reliable and updated, we don't have any that we could offer as a replacement. My suggestion would be to look at our newer range of thermometer to see if there is something that suits your needs
Mine is doing exactly the same. No comment on whether it is faulty or not just 'buy a new one'. I will be buying a new one but not a Weber one and believe me I will be telling everyone at every BBQ we have Not to touch the Weber accessories as Weber obviously does not care about you as a customer.
I bought this product about 5 years ago. I tried to use it for the first time (5 years later) and the screen froze when I turned it on. The Weber response to others who have had this problem is stunningly inappropriate. I interpret the response as "We don't give a f**k". Is this a fair summation of your (Weber's) corporate values?
Hi Hans. This may sound strange but the device doesn’t like fully charged fresh batteries. I had the same problem and found this solution on line. Replace the new batteries with partially discharged batteries from a remote or some other device that has partly discharged batteries. It worked perfectly for me.
Thank you!
I’m pleased I found this site before I wasted anymore time on my unresponsive Weber Style 6742 Thermometer. I shall now commit it to the trash. I am disappointed that such a cool company as Weber had not done enough due diligence before releasing such a crap product on your unsuspecting customers. The only laugh I’m getting put of this is your suggestion that we all upgrade to your latest model thermometer -Yeah right! I suggest you stick to making BBQues and leave the electronic stuff to those that know what they are doing!
Hi Cliff, thanks for your feedback and we appreciate that this would have been a frustrating experience for you. We have made those thermometers obsolete a number of years ago now, and while some are still performing with our customers, others are deteriorating with age. We have updated our digital thermometer range to include improvements that were learned from the 6742 thermometers.
I have the same unit as the rest of the complainants, unit gave off continuous beep, put in new batteries expecting it to cure fault, whole unit lit up and that's it, stuck. Very very disappointed this was bought as a present for me and is now useless. Would not recommend. Derrick Reid.
Hi Derrick, sorry to hear that you've not had a great experience with the product here. This line is now obsolete and we now have a wide range of thermometers that have completely different functions and have been improved since this line of thermometers.
I'll add another incidence of a unit with a unresponsive display after battery change. I tried a set that had been used previously, then a brand new set of Duracells. Same, same both times. What utter tripe and nonsense from Weber about newer batteries being 'stronger'. Its is obviously poor voltage regulation by the product. That sort of reply is something that would make me inclined never to purchase any over-priced Weber item ever again.
I've done the exact same thing with no fix. Its out of warranty so I don't think there to concerned about trying to resolve it
I certainly won't be buying a Weber replacement, it'll probably be just more cheap Chinese crap. Its astonishing that the unit is deficient in something as basic as its voltage regulation. Less than a $1 in components would have prevented the issue.
Yes , a poor product, made cheap with premium price. I wonder if Weber reps use these units? If they did they might find how bad it is RMOM
Hi Bob, we are sorry to hear that you're having some further issues with this particular product. If you've done all we have suggested with the batteries then I fear you may just have a defective unit. These are now discontinued in our range.
We are always working to develop and improve products, which is why sometimes we discontinue products if they don't meet our high standards. There are a multitude of other thermometer options in our range now, and if you'd like any further information on these, please see them here: external link
I purchased my Weber style 6742 thermometer about 3.5 years ago, maybe used it about a dozen times. Of course I dont still have a receipt. To ensure I didnt muck up cooking the turkey this Christmas 2019, decided to play safe and replace the original batteries. Now I have just a blank blue screen, sometimes, a few beeps now and then. This occurred even with some old batteries I had lying around, so went out and bought top quality ones, with the same results. After reading a previous review I am now kicking myself for throwing out the original batteries, the unit was working perfectly. But seriously, what is the problem with the thermometer? I have been using Weber products for past 20 years with confidence, and would hate to think a supposedly quality product is a dud.
Hi Charles, we're sorry to hear you've had an issue with your thermometer. As strange as it sounds (and this might be something you've already realised), but batteries have improved in quality since these thermometers were manufactured; newer batteries can sometimes be too powerful for these units and cause them to not function. I would typically suggest using some older batteries from another appliance around your home but you've already tried that.
It may just be that the unit has died and requires replacing. Being an obsolete model, you'd be looking at an iGrill or one of our more current thermometers to replace it with.
