Better than you'd expect! – I rode one of these new back in the naughties and found it really memorable through steep hills and tight traffic. I was laughing my butt off the whole time and should have lost my license... Had a SZR660 as well and that wasn't as much fun and slower with the 5 valve engine... More recently had couple Ducati Monsters (900 carb and 800 efi) and… Read more
thought these were more suitable, but an XT660 popped up at the right price locally so I purchased it a month ago. The roads out here are pretty bumpy and sometimes downright dangerous. The XT660X takes the bumps in it's stride. It's got a power commander clone and Staintune pipes so it goes good and sounds good. The REALLY surprising thing is that it's a better ride (for me, out here) than the 800M and I can't really tell the difference with the power either, power up to the legal limit is great. maybe I'm getting old, but this is, for me , a better ride than either Ducati! With the mods it fuels BETTER than the 800M injected bike I sold last too! Watch out for things vibrating loose and if you're looking at one check that the mountings for the instruments aren'/t busted like mine were... Go over the machine with a bottle of loctite, as it's been trying to vibrate itself to pieces for at least a decade now.
And the BEST bike to find Neutral on that I've ever owned...

2009 xt660x – Had the bike 8 months love the idea of suppermotos but not the discomfort that comes with longer journeys. I fell in love with the thing. Was in pretty ruff condition spent my time tarting it up. Added air filters exhaust system, power commander dyno time. 55 bhp 72ftb torque. They are on the heavy side but once standard exhaust. Rear foot pegs… Read more
tool kit tail tidy and other items have been removed your losing 15 ish kg. Roughly 165kg fuled up. Witch I think is perfect in between. Heavy anuff to not be thrown around in wind and light anuff for the twisties. I love the bike. The low down torque is what makes the bike fun. Out and out speed isn’t what it’s about 110mph. But plenty for most and I still enjoy longer rides on it. Standard I think they are heavy and abit lack luster. If your happy to spend some money on it or can find one that has already had these mods done I would highly recommend it’s a hidden gem. I think 2007 up the rear shock is ok but front needs a progressive spring kit 130 ish. 2007 and older need both changing. Rear shock change would make a big difference but not as much as front for 07 on. I’ve had no reliability issues but only ridden 3400 miles so far as I been putting parts on. Spokes do get rusty I had the wheels powder coated and put spoke covers on
09 yamaha XT660X – I bought my XT660X in 2010 as a new bike. I chose the XT because of the bigger engine and the large veritity of performance parts. where as the KTM at the time , you could not buy after market performance parts. My previous motorbike was a 08 suzuki hayabusa which after a bit of tinkering had it 193hp at the wheel and 102ft/lbs and went through a… Read more
back tyre every 1000 ks and the general up keep was terriblly expense. My XT had problems with the computer software and the engine cutting out on occasion. But after I installed a $280AU power commander 3 and that solved that problem. And I picked up 2.6hp. Yes they are bit heavy? But because I like to tinker . I changed the exhaust and rear shock , swing arm which dropped a fair bit of weight.
Overall the Yamaha XT660X Is built for a price and it is heavy and slow. But it does have big engine which it shares with 700 raptor , ATV and after market turbo kits. I guess what I am saying is that the later XT's especial have plenty of potential. So if ya like to tinker with your bike they are a good project bike. My XT,s engine is currently in bits. The cylinder head I have had it flowed which it has increased the power between 22 - 25% or from 51hp to 75hp. together with 2mm oversized ferrea stainless valves and Cosworth- schmithelm double valves springs. And I have recently upgraded the kit to 105.5mm big bore kit which brings it up to 778, with a 5mm stroker crank. which will to keep up with the turbo ATV's It should make between 111 - 115hp at the wheel. If anyone is after the exact spec drop me an email at nsr400ss@gmail.com The torque A bit computer problem and a bit heavy but fixable.
Fuel injection nightmare! – Bought mine second hand just about a month ago.. had just 2k on the clock so you could say not even run in! mines an 07 and straight away i seem to have come across the dreaded engine surging at low speeds and revs caused by the now infamous ropey fuel injection! The bike is unrideable in traffic or around town.. it just coughs and splutters as… Read more
if you have dirty petrol! Becomes almost dangerous as your attention is diverted from the task in hand.. I cannot believe a bike like this from a major manufacturer like Yamaha that has been in production for nearly 10yrs now could still be allowed to leave the factory with this problem unsolved! I just wish i had stumbled across a few of these reviews before i parted with my hard earned cash.. There are plenty of decent no hassle machines to choose from out there to be bothering with this lemon! And to get this sorted i could be lookin at the guts of 500 quid to spend on power commanders and K&N air filters and the rest.. I just cant understand how yamaha have been getting away with selling a bike that doesnt work for so many years! I wont even mention the crazy weight of the bike.. heavier than most 1000cc superbikes! Looks, Riding position, the thumping sound from the cans to heavy, break cable blocking view of instruments! side stand doesnt fill you with confidence! oh and the fact that its unridable at low speeds!
What a bike! – Great bike, does what ever you need it to. Heaps of power and a good height for 6ft plus guys. I have a 2011 model and it has no fuel injection problems. Comfy seat and loves to ride dirt roads. This bike is worth spending that little bit more, it feels quality. Very fast, nimble, sexy Cable in front of the instruments, needs bash plate, wind shield and baggage rack. Almost worth getting the tenere. Show reply
A great piece of kit – This is the perfect all round motorcycle, it does everything well and this makes it totally practical. I own a 2009 and have completed close to 6K and have to say that I'm really happy. Ok, its not super fast but 0-100 in 5.5seconds is quick enough and more than enough to keep you ahead of the traffic - handling is balanced, smooth and razor… Read more
sharp around corners and this makes riding at lower speeds a hoot - The 15LTR tank provides a decent range and servicing is inexpensive. These machines are no longer imported into Aus but the R version is still available and not a bad option if a bit more off road work suits you. Everything, it does it all well
