Is there less than 1 star? I had a BMW 316i 2015 start falling apart as soon as its hit 75000kms. Everything went wrong from coolant, leaking oil and now drivetrain. BMW refused to help although the car has been serviced by them until now. My friend had a Deawoo which is a better car than this BMW. Please avoid buying this so call luxury prestige… Read more

  3 Series Sedan G20 M340i xDrive

This is a review of the G20 2019 M340i xDrive. Are they great? Yes they are! In Australia we have the M340i xDrive and the M340i xDrive Pure, the Pure being the model without a few things like Harmon Kardon sound and heated seats. The M340i has a single turbo, 3 litre straight six, which is good for 285Kw and 500NM. xDrive means it’s AWD,… Read more

although with a rear-drive bias. The gearbox is a lovely 8 speed ZF.

The negatives: It has no spare wheel, like many newer models, and therefore not even a jack. It rides on run-flat tyres. An M340i xDrive is not cheap to buy. I bought mine second-hand which is the only way I could get into one. A regular 330i is cheaper, and much more plentiful

The positives: It’s fast, it’s comfortable and it’s loaded with everything you need. You can drive it like a regular 3 series and aside from a different tone to the exhaust, your passengers will think it’s just a comfortable sedan. Or you can pop it into sport, put your foot down and drive it like the engineers intended!

I have an easy 40 minute daily commute and I average 7 litres to the 100km – incredible really. Driven around town and it’s more likely to be 10. For the performance, this is great economy.

It’s quiet inside, has a fabulous sound system, (Harmon Kardon with 16 speakers), lovely heated seats and I think a very comfortable ride. Prior to this I had a brief fling with a Holden Motorsport Commodore (never quite suited me). Before that I had an F87 M2 DCT, a lovely fun car but a super hard ride. It felt quick and was a true M car, but the M340i is easier to live with as a daily and is a little quicker still. It's also a bit nicer inside than the earlier M2's

The xDrive is marvellous when you need to get away from the lights in a hurry on wet roads. Or just anytime. It's addictive, but not an essential part of driving it (like a full M car)

The other nice thing about the M340i is that it looks like a regular 3 series. This means you have less attention from others on the road. I would have been happy with a 330i but I wanted one with HK sound, heated seats and preferably a limited slip diff. Hard to find. For not a lot more money, I found the answer in the M340i

I’ve had over 50 cars and this is the best all-round car I’ve had. I love it!

The M340i is a great car – My car is absolutely amazing. I can't believe how far BMW has come in terms of quality and reliability! I have the M340i pure with shadow line delete (less gloss black, more chrome silver etc). I use it as my daily driver from home to work and school runs etc and has never failed my family. We will definitely be buying another BMW in the future. Show details

Best Family Car – I love this car. It is powerful, comfortable and it is super reliable! My family have made long distance trips with ease. It was quite expensive to buy and service costs ask a premium but it is very liveable. We haven't had any major issues at all and even when we took it to a fathers day track-day event it never missed a beat. Although the red… Read more

2004 BMW 325ti 6 speed manual M- sport – Absolute pleasure to drive, extremely economical on long trips, plenty of power and handling is superb. Needs to be serviced at correct intervals by a mechanic or technician that knows these cars and they won’t give you much issues. Cult classic with major drifting or racing potential if that’s your thing. Minor problem with mine is the sunroof… Read more

My favourite BMW is the E36 – Old school, muscular and poised with a design that is still relevant in the 21st century. Easy to fix and come with some issues but worth it if you can find a well looked after model with realistic mileage and cheap on fuel. Issues with air-con and leaks sometimes and some auto electric gremlins but overall e 36 is cool and is a classic for a reason. Show details

Gumtree or similar and test drive the car etc in person or get an RAC inspection pre purchase. This model the E46 is solid and powerful. I have a 320i 2003 and it cost me $2500 AUD i spent $320 fixing a few things and an oil service and now it runs nicely with a few minor things left to do. It's not because it's a BMW that you may have issues it's poor selection of a second hand vehicle, no background and ignoring problems or warning lights, smoke etc. Do a test drive and mostly watch out for sharks,,,when i sell beemers i am happy to let them test drive and ask 100 questions. Take your time as you may get the price down for an inspection and service,,,,,,, don't buy a BMW from the internet !!!! find it online then go in person. The car picture i posted is the afore mentioned $2500 after a wash and basic service that now looks like $$5000$$ This is the way.

Most reliable car I've ever driven – Most reliable car I've ever driven! I've had this car for more than a decade, done nearly 200kms and never broken down. The parts are not as expensive as one might think - there's also plenty of aftermarket cheaper quality alternatives available too. It's still feature packed with phone bluetooth connectivity, airbags on both passenger and… Read more

drivers sides, lumbar support, leather heated seats, full electric - mirrors and seats, back seat child locks, seat belt and low tyre warning, run flat tyres, ABS etc.. Very comfortable and easy to drive. The only negative, and its a small one, it can be difficult to see out the rear window - the rear seats sit quite high and the head rests are large - this can be overcome somewhat by raising the height of the drivers seat. It's also worth noting there's no rear airbags - but the seat belt warning works for rear passengers too. Overall extremely impressive, and great value for money - not as expensive as perceived to repair! I cant recommend them highly enough! Boot is large, handles exceptionally well, and is fuel efficient too approx. 12.9lt/km.

Put off BMW for life – I bought my 2002 BMW 318i with low km in 2017 because another driver at work liked BMWs. I saw this one on eBay at auction about $2k and went to see it. Having seen it I got soft for maybe the first time in my life and offered the guy what he wanted for the car, $5000. Roof liner drooped, radio wouldn’t turn off. And ‘ohh no, we don’t have… Read more

service record books’.. dead ringer for a problem. Never have I made such a soft hearted and soft headed mistake but at the time all I wanted to do was stop my wife from having to drive me 1/2 hour to work and back every day and $5000 I was willing to pay for that. And I’ve paid for it ever since. First up was windscreen (cracked), and service the guy said he’d pay for .. ~ $400. Aircon didn’t work but regass got it going for a few months. Then the coolant system had problems - leaks. FIxed one myself when it blew up at traffic lights and steam went everywhere. $100. Still problems - Replace entire radiator $900. Had oil leaks; let it go and kept putting in oil till (kept it at safe level ) boss at work complained it smelled too much of it. I then took it to a local mechanic that had a ‘BMW expert guy’. Damn to hell thats where the fun really began. $2300 for partial oil leak repair. Took it out of the mechanic and in less than 2km it started with rough running so bad I thought I’d thrown a conrod. Back next day. Mechanic took for short drive, his around corner from me and voilà ! That’s strange. It works. Took another 1km back towards home. Rough and guts again. Back to mechanic again, angry. ‘We think it could be spark plug coil packs, and by the way - your radiator is leaking‘ ; $450 more. Took it away, no better. Took to radiator guys which said ‘not the stuff we did’ - it’s a part on bottom of the engine, needs a mechanic. Took to a different local mechanic who specialises in European cars and BMW. $500 for coolant leak problem, and now after looking at engine problem; ‘you need timing chain done’ ; $1800. Got it back. Still had rough running but not like conrod thrown, just noisy and like marbles in engine. Took back ‘could be CSV valve ‘ $500. Got it back. No better.

So far this car has cost me nearly $12000.

My kids and wife have given me hard time over it including fights on holiday. Lost any reputation of being professional transport and knowing mechical things through it. It now has more problems than when I took it to the first suspect mechanic. It’s worth next to nothing. It breaks down randomly in middle of busy intersections.

Whatever you do

DON’T BUY ONE !!!!!!!!!

My 5th BMW and my last – I owned a G20 320D M-sport (blue one) for 18 months or so but recently (finally) sold it. Haven't looked back. The power and steering were amazing, but that wasn't enough to make up for the many gremlins and weird operational functions. I did finally manage to get most of the warranty issues resolved before selling it, so as to not burden the next owner, but I won't own a BMW again. It was my 5th, so very disappointing.  Show details
