to be growing faster. 3 weeks into the first bottle, taking 2 pills a day,I noticed my mood dipping and starting feeing depressed. I am on anti depressants and have been travelling well until these pills. I didn’t make a link between the 2 and I decided to top up and purchased 2 more bottles. I took a weeks break from the pills and started up again. Now almost halfway through the second bottle , I’m feeling down in the dumps again and have noticed a feeling of nausea and headaches for up to 3 hours after taking these pills . I haven’t seen a doctor regarding this, but if I stop the pills for 2/3 days, my mood settles, but as soon as I start it up again, the blues start creeping in. Not sure if anyone else experienced this or not. I’ve also read an article about the link between the drugs used in other hair care supplements and increase in depression and suicide linked to the supplements …

I decided to give this Folli tub a crack anyway. It’s a really rich, thick cream - feels proper lush putting it on in the shower, and it smells lovely and fresh, not chemicaly at all. I usually leave it on for about ten minutes while I shave my legs. Honestly, just after the first few wash days, my hair felt heaps stronger and way softer at the ends. I’m a week in now, and while I don’t have a massive new mane overnight, it definitely feels denser and way healthier overall. Sticking with this one.

and my scalp sometimes felt itchy.
A friend recommended the Natural Hair Growth Shampoo, so I finally gave it a try. Right away, I noticed it felt gentler—there’s no harsh chemical smell, just a light, natural scent. It lathers up nicely, even though it doesn’t have all the sulphates most supermarket shampoos do.
After about three weeks, I could actually see and feel a difference. My hair felt lighter, my scalp was less irritated, and best of all, I was losing less hair in the shower! It also feels like my hair is getting a bit more volume at the roots—something I never got with the big brands.
Compared to my old Pantene or Dove shampoos, the Natural Hair Growth Shampoo is a bit pricier, but I use less each wash, and I genuinely think it’s worth it for how much healthier my hair looks and feels. If you’re sick of supermarket shampoos that just coat your hair and weigh it down, I’d say give this a go—you might be surprised!

to panic as my hair loss starts within a couple of weeks without it. It’s then I searched for an alternative. I was horrified at the side affects of some of the strong hair loss tablets and leave in products, so I asked the chemist for a more natural hair serum. He showed me the range and I chose advanced hair solution shampoo and serum. It started working almost immediately and I put that down to still maintaining good hair follicles due to taking flaxseed, and also how effective this product is. My hair is slowly getting thicker, it will be a long time before this new growth reaches the length of my longer hair, but that’s okay, so much better than losing too much daily. Flaxseed only helped do much, with advance hair solutions shampoo and serum, there’s only a normal daily loss. I’ll continue with the flaxseed as my skin is pretty good for my age, think flaxseed is the reason, as it levels hormones and is also a DHT blocker.

my hair colour to take. I had been noticing my previous thick hair had begun to thin noticeably in a patch in the middle of my scalp and the evidence of shedding was dropping on my work desk at an alarming rate. I am a 68yo female and found this can be quite normal for my age, but I was determined not to take it lying down. An investment of $90 for 3 months supply of tablets at Mr Vitamins ensued and although I didn't notice a huge difference in my hair regrowth over that time, I did notice it had stopped shedding, so thought we were on track. I invested in another 3 months worth and can honestly notice the difference, hair seems much thicker and that thin patch seems to have disappeared, although I have taken to wearing my hair a little differently to cover the initial patch and, more recently to cover a scar left by stitches near my eyebrow which I endured in a fall on the front steps. My hairdresser also commented how my hair had thickened up and was unaware I was taking the supplements. My advice to anyone in the same predicament is to give it a go. I just wish I had taken before and after photos, but, to be honest, wasn't expecting the results to be as good as they are.

What causes hair loss?
Losing your hair can be a stressful experience, and it doesn’t help that there’s no single baldness cure that works for everyone.
While you can be confident regardless of the amount of hair on your head, for those who want to treat their hair loss, knowing what causes their hair to thin and fall out can be a useful place to start.
Hair loss in both men and women can be caused by a variety of factors; some of these are temporary while other causes are more permanent.
Temporary hair loss
Temporary hair loss is often caused by things such as stress, dietary changes, hair products you use, medical conditions you have (such as scalp psoriasis), or medication that you take. Often this type of hair loss is more unpredictable and patchy.
Sometimes these problems go away over time, and you’ll start to see hair regrow once your stress starts to reduce or your diet returns to normal. However, sometimes you’ll need to actively make changes to your lifestyle and routine if your hair loss is prolonged.
When it comes to nutrition, it’s recommended that you maintain a diet rich in iron, ferritin, folate, vitamin D3, and zinc for healthy hair.
Permanent hair loss
Some common permanent causes of hair loss include:
- Androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, a genetic condition that usually inhibits hair growth at the top of the scalp.
- Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder which attacks and damages your hair follicles.
- Frontal fibrosing alopecia, a form of patterned hair loss.
Depending on why you’re losing hair, you may want to use a topical treatment, to make some lifestyle, diet, or routine changes, or a combination of both.
Types of hair loss treatments
There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all hair regrowth treatment. The right one for you will depend on your personal situation and what’s causing your hair loss, however here are a few at-home treatments for you to consider.
Topical ointments
Topical solutions are the most common hair loss treatment available, and these are also often the most effective. They can be ointments, creams, serums, sprays, and foams, and are usually applied directly to the scalp.
Oils
Oils that help treat hair loss often contain botanicals that nourish the scalp and hair shafts, which can naturally help promote hair growth as well as moisturise hair without weighing it down. Argan, jojoba, and castor oil are most commonly used for hair health.
Shampoos and conditioners
Shampoos and conditioners for hair loss often contain keratin to help promote hair health and thicken each strand, which can help make hair loss less apparent. They often either don’t have very potent active ingredients or don’t necessarily promote hair growth, and so are usually used in conjunction with other treatments.
While they probably won’t be a game changer when it comes to regrowing hair, they can help strengthen existing hair and make it appear fuller.
Scrubs
Scalp scrubs can help get rid of buildup that clogs up hair follicles, creating an optimal environment for new hair to easily grow. These scrubs can also help reduce scalp irritation.
Supplements
Hair loss tablets or supplements can help provide you with the vitamins and nutrients necessary for healthy hair. They generally can’t help bring forward a receding hairline, but they can help improve hair density and strength, making the individual strands less likely to fall out in the first place.
Common supplements for hair health often have ingredients like biotin, niacin, vitamin C, keratin, iron, and zinc.
Other types of hair loss treatments
While this guide mainly covers topical treatments, there are some other methods that you can consider to either treat or disguise hair loss.
- Dermarolling. Hair loss can be treated by dermarolling and microneedling, which both involve using a roller with small needles that prick the skin. The idea is that this increases the skin’s collagen production and regenerates hair follicles, which can help new hair grow.
- Laser therapy. Laser therapy is thought to improve circulation and promote hair growth. It’s often done in a clinic, however there are at-home treatments that you can buy.
- Hair transplants. This is an invasive surgery that involves transplanting healthy hair follicles into balding areas, and often takes around 6 months for you to see visible results.
- Cosmetic colouring. Colouring the scalp with a dye or hairspray, or tattooing the scalp (also known as scalp micropigmentation or dermatography) can help give the appearance of a fuller head of hair.
- Hair pieces. Those with more severe hair loss may opt for a synthetic or real hair wig or hairpiece to hide their hair loss.
What to look for in a hair loss treatment
Ingredients
Looking for active ingredients that are known to be effective in treating hair loss can be a useful place to start when choosing between products.
There are some hair loss medications, such as finasteride (found in the brand name Propecia), which are only available with a prescription, so if you’re after a more potent treatment, you should consult your doctor.
Here are some over-the-counter ingredients to look out for.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil is a medicated solution that is applied to the scalp to help reduce or stop hair loss and thinning.
It’s proven to be the most effective medication for hair loss (particularly for those in the early stages of male pattern hair loss) with the least side effects, the main one of which is that you may shed more hair in the first few weeks before you see the treatment help with hair regrowth.
Minoxidil is the active ingredient in common hair loss treatments like Hair A-Gain and Regaine for Women.
Saw palmetto
While there’s no extensive scientific evidence to support saw palmetto as an effective hair loss cure, it can help reduce levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgen that can cause hair loss. It’s often found in topical ointments and shampoos.
Biotin
Biotin is an important nutrient for healthy hair, skin, and nails, and a biotin deficiency - although rare - can lead to hair loss.
Supplements for hair growth often include biotin - Viviscal and Bondi Boost Hair Growth Support both contain the hair-nourishing ingredient.
Keratin
This is the protein that helps form your hair, skin, and nails. It can help grow hair faster and strengthen existing hair to reduce breakage, although it unfortunately can’t reverse balding. Many hair growth shampoos contain keratin.
Castor oil
When applied to the scalp, castor oil is thought to improve the health of hair follicles, which can have the effect of both stimulating hair growth and preventing hair loss.
Clinical validation
Has the product you’re considering been proven to help those experiencing hair loss? Only some active ingredients have been proven to reduce hair loss or promote hair growth in clinical studies.
However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you should ignore other hair loss products; sometimes anecdotal evidence and hearing what has worked for others can give you good pointers about which treatments might be right for you.
Don’t expect a miracle in a bottle.
A treatment that has worked for others may not work for you. Don’t put all your hope - and hard-earned cash - into a single treatment. For many, finding the right product for them takes a lot of trial and error.
Our advice? Do your research, get advice from a medical practitioner (or two!), and be realistic with your expectations.
Ease of use
How easy or comfortable a treatment is to use might affect whether or not you choose to go ahead with it. Often topical treatments can be sprayed or rubbed on the scalp, but sometimes these have a sticky residue that some people may not find worth putting up with.
Some treatments specify whether they should be used on wet or dry hair. This might be particularly important for those who find that they lose more hair when they wash it. For them, they may not want to go with a treatment that needs to be applied on wet hair and risk losing more in doing so.
Treatment length
You should consider how long the product recommends using it for before you see any visible results.
Some treatments, such as medications containing minoxidil, require indefinite use, meaning that your hair loss will resume once you stop using the product. This means you should be prepared to keep doing the treatment for as long as you want to keep your hair loss at bay.
How long does hair take to grow after thinning?
This depends on the treatment you use. For many hair loss treatments, you’ll only be able to start seeing visible results after a few months of use - this is normal, and you should be wary of those that claim to give you immediate results.
Price
At-home hair loss treatments vary a lot in price.
Topical treatments can range anywhere from $10 to $60 for a 50ml bottle, however these often have to be applied daily (and sometimes twice daily), so you may find yourself knocking back bottles regularly.
Supplements for hair growth can range anywhere from $30 to around $70 for 60 capsules, while a 250ml bottle of shampoo or conditioner that promotes hair growth can cost anywhere from $10 to upwards of $75 for more luxury brands.
If you’re after an at-home laser therapy kit, then you should expect to pay at least $300, with most kits coming in at between $800 and $1500.
The bottom line
Just because you’re experiencing hair loss, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to scramble to treat it. There shouldn’t be any shame if you choose to embrace baldness or hair thinning, just as there shouldn’t be any shame in taking steps to prevent or reverse hair loss.
If you do choose to look for a hair loss treatment, then taking your own health and beauty regimen into consideration when choosing a product will help you more easily find one (or a few) that suit you.
