Pros: Compact easy to hold shape.
Feature ritch, more like an SLR, so great for the semi-pro.
Uses high capacity SLR batteries and high speed compact flash memory.
Hot shoe mount for external flash and included wireless remote control is excellent.
Able to manual focus the lens via roll wheel.
Buttons well placed and functional.
Cons: Can't change lens (But its not an SLR) so ya expect that.
Canon did not develop an underwater housing for it :(
Shutter lag is better than most compacts, But not as good as an SLR.
Overall: Its a great camera for the novice thu to pro. I have used it extensivly for the family happy snap and the professional photo shoot.
Produces clear well focased images that are promotional quality.
The combination of the tilt & twist screen and the optical view finder make for a very well rounded photographic system in a compact form.
If you can't justify the expense and extra bulk of an SLR, the G6 is great value.
Overall: THE GOOD: Built quality, structure of menu is very clear and easy to manage, RAW (if needed sometimes), picture quality (the G6 is much sharper than the G3, but also sharper than my 10D with 10-40L. Unbelievable!). If the lens is realy the same like in G3 and G5, they were tricky with distorsion - it's not visible! I like CF cards, not the small new cards - if they fall into the grass you will never find them! And I have a lot of CF cards, so I had not to buy new type of cards. I love this camera!
THE BAD: Maybe wide-angle is too less - but you would buy more CA or less tele. (This is the reason why the Pro 1 has a bad lens). I don't have the (additional) Wide-angle adaptor 0.7, so I don't know it's quality. There is a little chromatic abberation in the corners (branches in front of bright sky) - but not disturbing. The G3 has much more!
OVERALL: I have a Canon 10D and a G3 in my equipment. Now I go to holiday with my family, and there should not wasting time and power for a SLR with heavy lenses. The G3 is fine for family snapshots but not for landscape enlargements to 30x45cm. So I tested a Sony W7 (too less manual features), a Nikon 7900 (too small for my fingers, no normal "P", only a lot of spezial programmes), the Olympus C8080W (horrible menu) ... I love the concept of the G3, the clear menu (I don't need the manual), the possible manual adjustments, and - very important for me - the histogramm after shooting.
Pros: Ergonomics - Excellent
Photo Quality - Excellent
Battery Charge Life - Excellent
Features - Too neumerous to mention...
Cons: Movie mode - does 640x480, but for only 30 sec per movie. As well, cannot zoom or refocus or adjust exposure while filming.
Overall: I love it !
Beside the movie mode, everything is perfect !
A note about the movie mode - you just have to remember that this camera excells at what it is supposed to do, and that is take still photos. The movie mode is just an extra, but one day, I would like to see a camera of this calibre with a decent movie mode as well.
