A proper beast of a saw – I've had my MS660 for about 10 years now and I really enjoy using it. The good points: -Endless torque... it just chews through huge rings of yellow box or messmate like there's no tomorrow -Has no trouble running a 30" bar or a 36" mill on Australian hardwood -Simple and easy to maintain -Very reliable - still on the original clutch and… Read more
sprocket, I'd estimate I've cut probably 500 tons of wood or more with it. The bad points: Well I can't really think of anything bad about this saw. It's pretty heavy if you're using it all day, but it's a big, solid saw. Perhaps the fuel tank could be a bit bigger. Had a 395XP previously and I wouldn't even think about going back to it. That was no end of problems and half the grunt of the 660. I look forward to many more years of work out of this saw!
The best saw ever made – Has been very reliable havent had a problem very powerfull cuts quick, still quicker than any new husky cuts twice as quick as mates 395xp. Good value for money id definately buy one again. Show details
Absolute Animal – I own 6 Stihl chainsaw including a Ms880 magnum but I keep going back to my 660. It is an absolute pit bull of chainsaw. It sounds angry and drinks fuel like a demon but my god it just eats through 700mm jarrah coins like you could only pray for. in my opinion there is no other chainsaw. This is it if you aren't a big sooky chicken boned wuss
Beast Saw – I had some second thoughts about getting my ms660 magnum, but I am definitely happy that I bought it. The 660 runs like a beast all day. It's a really powerful saw especially for the weight. It eats wood all day and loves it . I use it to mill with the Alaskan mill and works perfect. I'm in the process of doing a couple things to it . I got a… Read more
dual port muffler fitted on it, I have a max flow air filter and the performance has definitely increased . Probably my favorite stihl . I absolutely recommend this saw to anyone in need of professional saw.
It's a ripper saw – Like any chainsaw keep it sharp, clean the filter, correct tension, etc. I run BP Ultimate at 30:1 use a quality mix and have had no problems in 7 years of regular use. I cut all sorts of timber for our primary source of heating and have at times sold firewood. I don't worry about keeping my saw in pristine condition but do keep it sharp. And as… Read more
instructed by an experienced operator..."It's a powerful saw so keep your rakers low, make wood chips not saw dust".
Great Saw – After a bad review on a different Stihl saw, I thaught I would review the Stihl MS660, well after using the saw for a full winter, and cutting about 50 ton of hard wood eg: red and yellow box, and the good old stringy bark, I had no problems with it. Good value for money, heaps of power, top filter system. This chainsaw is the perfect machine… Read more

Its ok – I use the stihl ms 660 for my job. I use it every day, 10 hour a day. This saw use to cut rubber trees down. 1 day cutting is equal to 65 m3. That is 2 fifteen ton truck loads. I find this saw good to use for this job. However, the saw sometimes lose power. And i have to file the chain many times in a day. The saw is only 54 mm, its only can… Read more
handle some certain type of use. Every year, i have to buy a new saw. Bloody hell man the 660 is very expensive already. But only can use it for 1 year. Stihl engineer people is not enough yet. Stihl should make 60 mm chain saw. Plus the chain, should make the chain from hard titanium steel. So i don`t have to file too many times in a day. Should make stihl chain where i only file it 2 times in a day. So, i can make my job faster. I get pay by the load of work get done, not the amount of hour in a day. its reliable for only 1 year, its powerful its cost 1500 bucks very expensive, the starting every morning take alot of effort. should make it easy2start system like the brush cutter does.
Stihl Chainsaws – Not sure about this saw but I have a MS 230 and MS 311. Have used the 230 for approximately 6 years and 311 for two. Both excellent saws particularly the 230 for small jobs and can still be used for many larger pieces of timber if required. also not very heavy and both start easy Reliability, comfort, ease of service
Top pick for fallers! – sawchain was complaining about the clogged filter and vibration because he is forcing the saw to cut with a dull chain. this will max the dampners and makes wood dust instead of wood chips that a sharp chain would produce. most people dont know how to file a chain properly or tend to cut the ground when bucking. high rever and light weight. inboard clutch gor east chatn removal and sprocket change. comes with wimpy starter rope. best saw made – i ve had my ms 660 magnum for four years i cut up to 60 loads of wood a year just replaced the bar i run a 25 inch bar and never get tired of the weight because with the weight comes awesome power and dependability bar none endless power and dependability Show reply
Good – Probably about the best saw available in the 90cc class, plenty of power for most jobs, reliable. The major problem is the air filtration, Stihl Australia will not admit that it is not as good as it could be, Whilst using the saw for commercial cutting I was having to clean or change the air filter every 2 hours which is frustrating, Dust can… Read more
also get in under the base of the air filter in certain cutting situations. Oil delivery even when opened fully is not too good, however there is a mod out to increase the oil pump flow. I don't know why Stihl do not have the higher flow rate pump fitted as standard equipment.
I have two of this model saw and have used these saws with bars from 18" up to 42" with skip or extended skip chain, with the longer bars it obviously cuts a bit slower, but if you want to cut big timber regularly you get a bigger saw. ( MS880 ) Robust, plenty of power for most jobs, has side chain tensioner, proper inertia activated chain brake. Vibration damping is not as good as it could be, air filtration system is poor, oil feed is a bit low for long guide bars.
