thought I'd buy. Tyres were upgraded before it left the shop - and it included a three month checkup and introductory course to bike servicing.
Bang for buck, this is a great bike. GT used a sensible selection of components, using cheaper where appropriate (the 553 cranks are between Tiagra and 105) and higher-spec'd where needed (Ultegra Derailleur).
After 12 months and 1000s of km, the bike is going strong. The only downside are the wheels - but even the stock Shimano wheels on bikes twice this price are only give you a few thousand kms at best. You'll then either start stuffing around with them - upgrading the bearings and re-truing the rims - or buy something better. At least a wheel upgrade can be done without having to change anything else on the bike, and it's a purchase you can plan for. Value for money, reliability, light weight, solid components. Shimano's r500 wheels are cheap and nasty, but expected in this price range.
