Great Lights but Fiddly to Set Up – I got these lights as a gift whilst purchasing a bigger item from 4WD Supacentre. I have used the lighting kit several times and whilst this is a great idea and it works well, especially if you are camping in one place. However, if you are moving around, they are fiddly to set up and pack away and they are not as well-made as they could be. They… Read more
can be powered from an auxiliary outlet or connected directly to a 12v battery using he supplied croc clips. You can use as many or as few as one light as required as each unit, cable and dimmer etc are all separate, no requirement to use all 4 at once.
Problems - The lights themselves can be attached using Velcro straps which are very fiddly to use or you can use the magnets in the back of the lights, they also supply zip ties for a more permanent set up. The lights can be dimmed to a low output or turned right up to very bright white but they attract many insects that fly around them at night so, they need an amber or red option. Taking them down is also a fiddly affair and I usually only deploy 2 lights because it is just easier. I would like to add this about the magnetic feature of these lights, cars are not really that flat and those magnets are only just good enough to hold the lights. Any slight knock and they fall off so, the re needs to be at least 2 more magnets in each light to make them stick better.
However, by far the biggest issue is the wiring where it enters either side of the light units. After one use, the wiring sheath had come off and exposed the black and red wires underneath and after 5 uses, the red and black wires had broken and were shorting out the power and blowing the fuse. I had to strip this light unit, cut the broken wires and re-solder them back on. Then I have had to strengthen the points where the wires exit all the lamps as they are the main point of failure for these lights. In use, they are fine because the wires are kept straight but after use and to stow them back into the carry case, you need to bend the wires and that is when they fail.
In summary this is a good kit that can be dimmed and brightened as required; however, they need a red or amber function built in. Also, the carry bag has to be longer or the wires where they feed into the lights has to be improved, although looking at this picture, they may have improved the cable entry points as mine didn't have the grommets as these in the second picture seem to have. That said, in the first picture, they don't have grommets plus, they now supply an additional amber lighting add on kit which I have purchased and these lights do not have the grommet so they are also prone to breaking.
