Completely useless product. It stops working after only a few days of use. It constantly drops off the Find My network, and the only temporary fix is to remove the battery and reinsert it just to get my iPhone to detect it again. Absolute rubbish. I can't believe Apple keeps selling such a poorly made product!

somewhere at home (here). Tried to reset. Hopeless. Bought another tag ($45) in case the first one was a dud. Second one did the same. And despite what the YouTube clips tell me, it is impossible to remove the battery from the unit to reset (as they advise). Opinion: waste of money.
Follow-up · Having more luck with the third tag. Another $45. At present it is working well. Is not in real time, but it does show the location reasonably accurately. Set-up was not simply plug n play. Little bit fiddly. Range is quite good. Has been as far as 120kms from home and still registered.

APPLE devices, we thought it would be a good idea to purchase AIR TAGS & place in our luggage just in case it got lost or didn’t turn up at its destination, which would have been slightly disastrous if that happened. Fortunately all was fine, but It was certainly a great decision, a wise decision and a “peace of mind” decision, and one we have never regretted.
I’m probably the least tech savvy person on the planet & unsure exactly how this smart little electronic white button-like device works, .. but, folks, it DOES WORK & it’s absolutely super .
AIR TAG is a super easy electronic way to keep track of your stuff. These handy little Bluetooth tracking devices can track any item they’re attached to whether that’s your suitcase, your car, your keys, even your pet. Tracking is via your iPhone or iPad.
So, in a nutshell, getting it connected was pretty easy, even for a novice like me. When you take the AIR TAG out of its packaging, it comes with a tab that keeps it from turning on until ready for use. All I had to do was pull that tab, which effectively “wakes up” the AIR TAG & then simply hold the AirTag near my phone or device & and after just a few seconds , my iPhone recognises the signal from the AirTag & the iPhone screen gives me a couple of prompts to follow. I simply then just had to give the Air Tag a name & connect it to my Apple ID.
I then just go into the FIND MY app on my iPhone hit the CONNECT button in that app & hey presto, my AirTag is now connected to my phone and Apple ID. It’s very secure which I love too. For those worried about privacy, all AirTags are connected to a single Apple ID so only those logged onto an Apple device either that particular Apple ID can actually see the location of the Air Tag.
After checking our luggage in at Sydney Airport, it didn’t take very long the AirTag to send a message to my phone that our luggage did indeed make its way onto our flight. I tell you folks, that’s so much better than simply waiting & hoping that your luggage is in the right place. And in the event that your luggage does go astray, chances are you’ll be able to advise airline staff exactly where it is before they even know that themselves.
I can’t emphasise strongly enough how handy it is to be able to track anything it’s attached to at any time, but of course, it’s particularly helpful when travelling. I was even pleasantly surprised when porters took care of our luggage at the hotel & wedding venue & even then my iPhone just automatically kept track of it.
Seriously, .. best little invention ever that will save you a lot of headaches if you lose something. I can’t recommend it strongly enough and it comes at a very reasonable price tag of just $50 each. We purchased ours directly from our local Apple Store. Worth every penny for what it can do, and the peace of mind it brings.
One thing to bear in mind that Apple Air Tags can only be used with Apple devices - they’re not compatible with Android devices as they use a system system.
I love my Apple Air Tag and 100% wouldn’t be without it now, especially when travelling.

while my wife headed for home (where she found the keys). The thing is there was a period of time where you are not only thinking of the cost of replacing expensive (remote locking) car keys but also if there is anything on the fob to identify the location of the house. It was at this point I deemed the purchase of AirTags a necessity for my mental health at least.
Whilst initially only wanting to purchase one ($49), the four for $149 was fairly persuasive in tipping me over from “only need one” to “won’t I be annoyed if they’re so good I wish I’d bought more at the cheaper rate” ...hence the arrival of a four pack. The tags themselves are around 31mm diameter and 8mm thick and take the shape of a white plastic disc with a smaller silver disc on one side. This has the usual Apple logo and some peripheral writing (of no consequence). Pushing down with your fingers and rotating anti-clockwise releases the disc giving you access to the battery compartment. Push down and rotate clockwise to re-secure the battery. Unusually for an Apple product, you are able to replace the battery yourself and it is a fairly common CR2032 button battery. Apple claims the battery should be good for a years use but it’s too soon to confirm that. Being a button battery, great care should be taken using these around young children. If the battery cover has been properly re-secured it is doubtful to cause a problem but I would be more concerned about the tag being a chocking hazard due to its size and similarity in appearance to a large mint lolly? That aside, the vast majority of these will be secured in some type of holder as Apple imbues the AirTag with no other means of holding it ...not even a hole in the edge to allow a ring to be attached. I ended up having to purchase three cheap fobs to secure three of the tags with the fourth being placed “naked” in a pocket of my wallet.
Setting up is easy (Nb.it only works with an Apple iPhone). Pull out the plastic separating the battery contacts which will start the tag and allow it to beep, indicating it is ready to setup. Hold it near the iPhone and it will pop up a window asking you to connect. It then asks for a name (select from provided ones) or custom name it. You also add an icon. Once this done, the tag is ready to go. Then is no way to force a firmware update but this happens automatically when the tag is within about a metre or less of your phone. You can also see the firmware number installed in the “Find My” app on your phone.
Finding the location of the tag requires opening the “Find My” app on your iPhone (or iPad) and selecting the “Items” tab (AirTags are listed separately from your other Apple devices). Then you select the relevant AirTag and a number of functions are presented to you. There is;
1) Play Sound – You will need to be close by to activate this as the tag uses bluetooth which only has a range of about 10metres. Once activated, it makes a high pitched chirp which is fairly loud considering the size of the tag but which will be easily muffled if the tag is in some location (under bedsheets or down back of lounge) where there is a lot of sound absorbing fabric.
2) Find – Again, you need to be within less than 10metres of the tag. Otherwise you’ll only get a message on your phone asking you to “move around some”. At some point it should find a “weak signal” whereupon you focus your movement in that area. Once reaching around 3metres or less distance, the screen goes bright green and should give you a distance and direction to the tag.
3) Notifications – Seems like a separate function but remains greyed out unless you have activated “Lost Mode” whereupon you can switch it on to receive notifications when it is found? Found this somewhat confusing. Guess I’ll find out in time why they separated it out from “Lost Mode”.
4) Lost mode – Use this when your tag (and whatever it is attached to) is lost away from home. Anybody walking within bluetooth range of the tag (must be carrying an Apple iPhone with IOS4.5 or later installed) will trigger it and will anonymously use that nearby iPhone to report its location back to you. When you activate this mode, it will ask if you want to add an email address or phone number. If someone finds an AirTag, they are able to use their iPhone to retrieve that email address or phone number allowing them to contact the owner (hopefully). Don’t forget, AirTags are for finding lost items...not necessarily stolen items where the tag is probably easily removed and disposed of.
Also on this page you can rename the tag (and/or change its icon) or remove it (factory reset). There is also a battery indicator letting you know the current battery capacity of the CR2032 battery. I assume you will get a pop up on your iPhone alerting you to a low battery level for these.
Functionally, the tags appear to operate as I expected (I had done some prior research before purchase). My biggest disappointment was the “Find” function which did not do near as well as I thought it would. You have to be a lot closer to the tag than I would expect to get the direction and distance notification and (while testing), I found I would have been just as easily able to find my tag by playing the sound. However, if the sound was being muffled (as previously mentioned) I guess this feature would be useful. Fortunately, I’ve not been in the position where I’ve needed to test the “Lost” function by losing my keys. I hope it works better than the “Find” function.
For anyone thinking of purchasing and are debating the cost, don’t forget the AirTag is supplied only as a small disc and has no means of attaching itself to anything (unless you glue it on). This “extra” cost will also need to be factored in. Apple branded holders are actually more expensive than the tags themselves. Fortunately, there are now many third party suppliers providing much cheaper alternatives. Just be careful as some cheap ones don’t secure the AirTag in place that well and you might need to use the “Find My” app to find the AirTag itself. In any case, Apple should have provided a means to attach it to something (no matter how basic) for the price they are charging for these.
Having now experienced these and how they function, would I buy them again. Probably as peace of mind in finding lost items can certainly outweigh the short term pain of a pricey device such as these!

I have two other air tags over two years old and they function still. They are simple and look nice as a keychain.

I really cannot use this tag, lots of money for a very bad, literally useless product.

warranty I would need to pay for this. Now normally I would understand this but given I did not need to replace the batteries until after the warranty period was over I was not to know that this would be an issue. So the AirTag seems to be a one time use then throw away and buy new ones. I was replacing the battery in multiple AirTags the batteries were new out of the packet. Not one of the AirTags would work again. Apple service was poor only repeating the steps and asking me to turn on and off my WiFi and Bluetooth. Poor product and they no longer back their product. After a lot of research I've found this; For the airtag to work (back to FIND MY on your phone), it needs THREE networks to be working; * GPS network , it records its own location but needs to see the sky, and not be in a creek. * The iPhone has to be on a data network, 4G, 3G. Can be any iPhone, but IOS 14.5 or greater. * The kicker, it uses bluetooth only to announce its location to an iPhone. That means 10 mtrs or less! 6m reliably.
If any one of those are not working, you're out of luck, lost dog. Even in a park where its 10 mtrs away, and you cant see the dog. Basically airtags are only useful for busy airports where iPhones are around, AND 10 mtrs or less. It talks to anybodys iPhone to register its location (FIND MY apple network). If your bag is dropped/lost off the trolley airside on the tarmac, you're out of luck! I'm getting a proper waterproof 4G cell network dog tracker, cheap SIM with a few dollars loaded on it for txts, to do the job. So appalled !! Shouldnt be on the market.

destination, I wanted to be sure that my luggage arrived at the city I had to travelled to and tracked it again. I was pleased that it detected exactly those places that it should have been! With this experience, I am inclined to get more of them, including one for the car perhaps in case of car theft. A great tracking device in my opinion.

Does what I want & more – One on my keys, left keys in taxi, watched the location change around the city all night. Was able to locate the taxi when it stopped for a long period of time. I travel for work weekly, can see my bags get loaded onto the plane and then see them before they appear on the pickup belt at the airport so I can order an Uber as soon as I know my bags are coming. phone on, open, and had good signal the whole time. The tag only updates location when the owner of the Apple ID is within ‘range’ of the tag itself. For us this only seems to be when both tag and IPhone are on the same property. Then it still doesn’t pinpoint to the exact location, you have to be able to hear the tone to know where it is. Example bedroom or bathroom or garage, etc.. Absolutely useless.
