Have had this printer for 3-4 yrs (following 20 yrs with HP lasers) and have never been excited by its design. I am always concerned about its small toner cart along with the cartridge 'housing' that also needs cleaning each time the toner cart is replaced. I have become a minutes secretary for a small group, and find that 300-pages of text soon flattens the toner cartridge. Very poor performance when claimed pages 'exceeds 700' Show details

Brother HL-1110 is no good – I bought a Brother HL-1110. These are still being sold by some retailers even though they are discontinued. Don't waste your money on it. After a short time, black dots form. Some are very large, They look like spilled ink. This is due to the shocking design that allows dust to form in areas that you cannot clean. I have tried everything. Nothing… Read more

gets rid of the black marks - always in the same places on the printout.

A design fault in one Brother printer probably means that all Brother printers are the same - rubbish!

Paper jam – The printer was brilliant for about a year. Best printer I have ever owned, but then a torn paper jam that couldn't be reached made the printer unusable. Normally such a simple problem. Show details

This is a mixed bag – Since Australia Post got too expensive to send anything and the email attachments became dirt cheap, I mean who uses printers? Who sends letters? Who uses Australia Post? I use Linux and several things arise from this. The genius's at Brother in Japan, provided a downloadable a set up file - from their website, that then meant to install the… Read more

drivers I have to be online while my system was interrogated for installation and data was uploaded and down loaded and it just went on and on and on and on and on..... huge download I forget... 118 Meg?

And then I had a HUGE fight with the people in Brother as in what if I go some place without an internet connection or it goes down for a week or 20 (Tsunami anyone???) - why can't you make it run as is, or provide a fully downloadable driver file that can be saved and requires no internet connection to install and make run.

You know Duh!

And since these companies have a dirty habit of making refills more expensive than a new printer, I bought a HEAP of after market toner and a spare 10,000 page ???? toner drum.... figuring this should last me till the end of time....

The people at Brother did take my instruction to FIX the bad driver file installation process into a stand alone file.

However the printer drivers have not been updated since 2013 and the printer runs in a faint gray instead of BLACK, and the resolution is fixed at 300 x 300 DPI (Draft) and the Normal mode is 600 x 300 DPI and the FINE is 600 x 600 DPI, and the "Toner Saver" mode is disabled, and while the highest density print (600 x 600 DPI) is selected, the drivers exert no control over anything with operating the printer.

So more fights with the Brother Corp via the US and A, because the Australian Tech support is an adept work shirker, and avoiding the Japanese head office as they "don't get it" in terms of getting things FIXED and running properly.....

And the Americans customer / tech support....

The issue is the CODING - of the drivers (international - runs on all Brother printer machines - all around the world) for Linux (Debian Distro - International software) and fixing the coding to actually run the printer, instead of leaving it stuck in 300 x 300 "Draft" resolution.

The Australian Tech support - telling them to escalate the problem with the drivers to get it resolved by rewriting it = buck pass and their way out of that. Compulsive liars.....

Take it to the Americans?

This is the poor the American Tech support come out with..... All work shirkers and liars....

"I'm sorry for the issues stated below.

There is a small problem though. Our Linux Support is USA based. Most of the customers we support are in fact for USA Products and Drivers we have control over. As you can see by the downloads page, Brother Support is sectioned by countries. Neither my team or I have the ability to test and reproduce this issue for you. In order to get attention for the problem. I believe you will need to contact your normal support departments within your country. They can test and reproduce using the exact machine and possibly open a report that supports the possible failure.

-Brother Technical Support"

I think for a basic letter printing type printer, it should be pretty good, but the Japs have done a totally lousy job on the drivers and controls for the Linux systems.

Universally and internationally - their tech support is unforgivably lazy and dishonest.

Fantastic Value For Money – A few years ago, I purchased a fairly expensive Hewlett-Packard inkjet printer which stopped working recently, so I decided to buy another printer for printing documents, research and writing. I found this printer in Officeworks and purchased it immediately, not expecting much. However, after using this printer for a few months with only one minor… Read more

issue (which could be solved by spending 30 seconds cleaning the drum), I can safely say that this printer gets the job done. A lot of people will find this printer very appealing because of the low price, but it is also very economical. The toner only costs around $50 and prints around 1000 pages. The quality of what this prints isn't bad either, it actually works extremely well for just printing text. And if you don't mind black and white, a graphic or photo here and there is fine too. Overall, this printer is very good if you're just looking for something simple. My only gripe is that it doesn't include the cable to connect it to the computer, so make sure you pick that up when you buy the printer.

Great printer for the price – Whilst this printer isn't as good as my more expensive Fuji Xerox D255, it does a great job when you simply want to print out several pages of a document quickly, and don't need whiz-bang print quality. You can often get this printer cheap for less than AU$40, which would make it debatable whether to buy a new printer or genuine toner cartridge… Read more

when the toner runs out on this or one of your other printers. It closes up to be a fairly compact unit, but takes up a bit more space at the front when the paper tray is dropped down for use. It doesn't have the network connect features of other units, and connects via the USB, which is fine. Only issue I have with it is a recurring dot on the page every 75mm or so, which I can live with when it is a AU$37 printer, for which I can replace the toner for AU$15!! It is a bit noisy, but is relatively fast to print, and is pretty good about going into powersave mode when it's not in use. No fancy features like wireless or duplexing, just a plain 'ol black and white laser printer.

Very efficient printer – Printer only prints in monochrome however the level of detail is amazing and wouldn't mind saving money on toner cartridges yearly. Sometimes can be annoying with the constant paper jams as it sometimes sucks in the paper the wrong way and it is a pain to take it out. Great energy saving mode to turn off by itself and connectivity is via usb and can have an ethernet cord attached as well. Overall, great value for money Show details

Cannot fault for its price – Hi, Have had this printer for a few years and it gets used on a daily basis with an average of 20-25 pages per day. It’s main purpose is to print receipts for our business and has been extremely reliable with the rare paper jam. Takes a few seconds to respond irrespectively either via USB directly or via a router. quickly and the quality and toner yield is excellent.

Also the replacement toner costs are very reasonable, even the genuine ones, though we use a third party replacement toner.

Setting up the printer was easy as well, pretty much straight forward on both PC & Mac.

Overall if you only need B&W and are mostly printing text, this printer is fantastic value and performs beautifully.

A no brainer really.

Printer can not be opened completely to remove paper jam – I have owned and loved brother printers for 22 years now. This is the first brother printer that i have owned that can not be opened completely to remove paper jam. I have been through 2 in 2 years now. Once you get a torn piece of paper caught inside the printer you may as well through it away. I normally get 5 or more years out of a brother printer. Show details

Cannot install driver on Mac OSX 10.6.8 – No problem not having USB cable included in the package as I use my old printer's cable. It is good for the environment and save Brother the cost for including another USB cable. Hope in the future they will still be using the same cable. I cannot install the driver on my Mac. Anyone got any idea how do I go about it? Brother tech people advised me that it is Apple's system problem. Need to consult with them. I haven't done so.  Show details

Good Printer for its price – Personally I only use this printer for school, so i don't need a very powerful printer. better value than buying ink cartridges that run out after few documents. Note, the printer's clarity is a little disappointing, so images are sometimes a bit blurry, but reasonable. I'm very happy with my device and think it is a great printer for its price.

Great little laser – Bought this little thing for about $80 after YEARS of inkjets that ran out of ink quickly and cost a bomb to replace. For the price its a wee beauty.

I keep mine well ventilated though when printing... safety first.

Oh and dont forget to buy a usb cord for it in case the checkout staff are too dull to let you know you'll need one.

Good old workhorse! – Have not had any problems with this printer excepting replacing consumables and am very satisfied as it is nearly 4 years old and used constantly. I bought it for it's portability and wanted a B&W printer only as the cheap colour printers seem to fizzle out too quickly. This printer has outlived 3 of those. Average printer – I've had 3 of these in the last 12 months. They print about 500 pages before you will need to buy new toner. I see some complaints from people that there is no cable included with the printer and low scores given as a… Read more

result. That's just not fair. The fact that it has no cable is clearly stated on the box of the product. If you missed that information there's no one else to blame other than yourself.

If you're after an average printer this is your mark. It has an average print quality, lasts for the amount of time that I would expect and rarely jams. The main (small) negative that I have is that it's not that easy to turn off. You have to hold the power button for several seconds and even then you're not sure if its worked as the LED power light is of low brightness.

Perfect for the price – Simple easy machine for my notebook. Not our only machine, just a simple value for money printer to sit next to the notebook upstairs, so we don't have to run up and downstairs for simple jobs. Hopeless – Whose smart idea at Brother was it to sell a printer that doesn't come with a cable to use it for? Cost cutting I understand, but at least make the product usable out of the box, and if not, at least make it known on the box to say that it is not included.  Show details

Very happy I have bought it – A very good printer for the price and easy to install. It does not include a USB cable with it but it did not bother me since my old printer had the same cable. It's also very fast and does a decent printing job. It's the first "brother" that I own and I will most likely stick with the brand and invest in one of their colour printer next time.  Show details

"works just" – Its cheap ! its noisy ! all pictures of unit show the paper tray closed , so when I got one from office works $58 , I only realised after installation the paper sits out in the open all the time collecting dust- IE there is no "paper tray" like my old brother 2040. Print quality is just ok, yes its cheap and will fill the gap untill the toner runs out and will then purchase something more robust, better quality, and has a paper tray !!  Show details

A sleepy printer – Product Review From: Bryan Clark, Email: ilparpanomad@outlook.com. In need of a simple, uncomplicated printer to use in conjunction with my laptop, I visited Harvey Norman's store, in Alice Springs, to examine their variety of offerings. The salesman finally recommended a Brother H L 1110 machine, saying it was "simplicity itself." "Is… Read more

it easy to set up?" I asked.. "I'm pretty much technologically illiterate."

"Easy as pie," I was assured. "Just put in the disc and away it goes. It installs itself."

Paying $47.00, I hurried off home to set it up so it would be ready for use in an hour or so.

To set up the printer I noticed a USB cord was required. No USB cord was supplied.

I phoned the Harvey Norman salesman.

"The brochure says I need a USB cord to set up the printer."

"That's right," he agreed.

"There's no cord in the box," I told him.

"That's strange," he said. "If you look around, you might find another USB cord somewhere."

With a borrowed cord, I proceeded with the activation procedure.

Fitting the ink carrier and following advice provided on the installation disc, I did a test printing by pressing the indicated button.

Nothing happened. The machine seemed to be sleeping peacefully.

I noticed a "help" section. On the computer, I contacted the website as recommended by Brother and dutifully described the difficulty I was having in getting the printer up and running. Up came a printed response. If the technician was able to help me with my problem, how much money would I be prepared to pay. I responded agreeable in spite of my discomfort.

I was then asked to provide my Mastercard number and other necessities, including am amount of money I was prepared to pay the unidentified "technician."

Immediately I aborted the web page.

Returning to the Harvey Norman store, in Alice Springs, early the next morning, I informed the salesman of my misadventures, asking him if a USB cable was absolutely necessary for the installation of my Brother printer.

"Yes, of course, it is," he nodded.

"So why wasn't a cord provided?" I wanted to know.

"Well," he shrugged helplessly, "I suppose you will have to buy a USB cable separately."

I argued: "Why should I have to do that if the cord is an essential part of the machine's function?"

Another non-committal shrug.

So I paid out $18.00 for a USB cable.

"The real price is $19.00, but I'll knock off a dollar for you," he grinned benevolently.

The cable securely attached between the computer and HL 1110 printer. I pressed the printer's green button to activate a test printing. No rumblings of internal activity, no humming or noises of internal awakening ... just a softly blinking green light, and the brand new printer that appeared to be happily dead.
