Brother HL-1430

brilliant – I got this baby about 9 years ago.. it's only now having trouble but that's just because I throw the worst types of paper in it (ie, scrap stuff with holes and the odd accidental staple). It's been dropped, it's cracked, it's been left outside for months.. it just keeps on going. Now that it's having some problems I'm afraid I'll have to retire it, but I'm definitely buying Brother again.
Good – This printer is great for the home office and for the price that its at is one of the cheaper mono laser printers. The dpi resolution for the price is fairly high however if you are printing graphics at all this is not the printer for you. Unlike other printers I have had, this one rarely jams and in general is fairly economic. The one time the… Read more
printer did have an error Brother support had replied within 24hours with exactly how to fix the problem. Economic, quick high quality printer occasional errors although if software drivers are updated this isn't an issue
Excellent – Worthy buy in the mono laser printer segment for SOHO use. Doesn't take up much space, is light and portable as well. Great little printer. Cheap to buy, cost effective to operate None thus far. And I've had it for 4 years.
Excellent – One machine started squeaking, after having done some 130'000 or so pages, problem getting worse, suspected toner unit had too many refills and needed replacing. Nope. Bearing noise from within the machine. Expecting to lube some piece of plastic nylon thingy, I tackled the machine wtih screwdriver and silicon grease. Half an hour later it was to… Read more
bits, testing to find the source of the noise, it was a metal bearing covered in toner. Nothing a total cleanout and re-grease would fix. These machines will easily do 200'000 pages if looked after.
You'll get well over 30000page yield from the drums if you use smooth surface technology paper like Victory 80gsm 158'901 pages on one machine done, 140'431 on the oher. A little machine built like a big laser, long lasting, durable, reliable. Discontinued. Replaced by HL-2040, a piece of plastic trash. Nice machine, faster at 20ppm, but no feedthrough, and too many critical moving components inside plastic. I doubt whether the new HL2040 will last even 50k pages.
Excellent – An excellent printer, the toner is easily purchased online at reasonable money. I haven't yet had to replace the drum. The printing operation is easy to understand, and double sided printing is a breeze. The back panel opens to allow printing of thicker cardboard, and single pages and envelopes can be loaded from the front. I've had this printer… Read more
for around 4 years, and it has performed beautifully. The toner lasts for ages and is very cost effective. The error messages are a little confusing. I would have liked to see a list of error messages printed inside the printer.
