through an era where competition with the market leaders demanded a bit more from the manufacturer. They, as do the replacements L2820DW and L2880DW print duplex, scan duplex (the 50/80 models), take a single feed for letter head paper, can print on an envelope, support AirPrint, and still work well under Windows 11, despite reviews from some who seemed to have had trouble with a couple of these features. My review is about the software rather than the hardware. While some reviews have rightly criticized the noise of the Brother printers (double the price and you might get a quieter HP printer), no one has looked at the software used to scan with the printers, which is where I think most of the problems reported have stemmed from, and it's almost impossible to evaluate it before purchase because the software while accessible in downloads, won't install or run without the physical printer switched on and accessible, so you have to buy it first and then fathom the software, which is usually cheap and nasty. So, the older Brother models, and even some fuji Xerox older models which look like re-badged Brother printers for the domestic market, used a software called ControlCentre4, while the new Brother Printers use a software called iPrint&Scan. ControlCentre4 is great, offering many features like rotating, cropping, automatically skewing the scan and deleting blank pages from the scanned documents, and others. However it has a difficult interface, two interface versions that can confuse and the initial install does default to the confusing more complicated so you first have to realize you need to change to the more user friendly configuration. But it does do anything I've ever wanted but only on the PC. iPrint&Scan is Brothers replacement that comes with the L28 series printers, and while iPrint&Scan can be used with the older printers, ControlCentre4 cannot be used with the newer models, but unlike CC4, has versions for IOS and Android devices as well as Windows/MAC. Mt personal needs require the abilities to crop and leave out blank pages, both features handled by CC4, but NOT by iPrint&Scan on Windows. They are in the mobile device versions, so WHY NOT ON THE WINDOWS VERSIONS!!? What sort of a lame approach to good design and product quality deploys a product to multiple platforms with some important features left out some of the versions, especially when the superceeded software handles these so easily and well. This is another cheap and nasty outcome like the noise, that turns what should be a market leader into just another piece of frustrating crap. Brother, get your act together and fix up iPrint&Scan so your low skilled front line support agents don't have to feed unintelligent garbage back to people like me who are only trying to help with good feedback. Issues like these are what frustrates people as is indicated in some reviews I've seen of the older models. THE SOFTWARE IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE HARDWARE AND IN THIS CASE IT WOULD BE SO EASY TO FIX! People, research your software as well as your hardware before you buy. Meanwhile I freely admit this review is primarily meant to kick Brother out of their complacency and get them to improve iPrint&Scan for Windows
Remarkably unreliable – The printer can be made to connect via the USB, however if it isn't used for a day or two it gets some kind of error and won't print, sometimes can be re added to the printers and sometimes it won't, but you're pretty much guaranteed that it won't work next time you try to used it, and I'll have to reinstall the printer. Every time I try to use this printer I have to re add it in the control panel and it can take many many attempts to actually get it to connect.
I'd never buy a brother product again.
GOOD PRINTER BUT HAS WIFI ISSUES – I purchased this about aa year ago. For the first eight months it had no problems, then it gave wifi connectivity issues (I have not changed my router or the location etc) Wifi drops suddenly or not connected at all. The only option was to restart it and enter the wifi password manually. I even tried to solve this with a wifi extender located next to the printer but results were the same. I hope Brother would rectify the issue. Show details
Provisional review only – My Canon Pixma TS9060 colour ink jet printer died recently. A shame. It was a good printer, but it developed a few problems i.e error code 6000 telling me that there was a paper jam, which I couldn't see, as well as suddenly not being able to work on wi-fi from my i-Phone. cartridges, and ink is quite expensive, so I took the option of going with a laser monochrome printer. I consulted the Choice Magazine articles on printers, and while none of the monochrome laser printers got a recommended tick, the feature scoring ratings for the monochromes weren't all that bad. The size of the box for this thing was a surprise. It was very bulky and quite heavy, so much so that I needed a shopping trolley to get it out of the shop and to my car. Inside the box was a heap of cardboard packaging. I suppose that it is better than styrofoam, from an environmental point of view, but there was a lot of it. I wonder how many trees were involved in its production? The printer came with a toner cartridge and printer drum, installation guide, internet connection guide, product safety guide, installation disc, a telephone connector cable (for fax use I presume) and a telephone socket. A big omission was the lack of an ethernet cable or a USB cable to directly connect to the computer, which is my preference. This printer is supposed to be able to Wi-Fi connect to a local network, but at the moment, that is just too much stuffing around to set up when I want a printer NOW. I will work out how to do it later. The unit is bigger and bulkier than the Pixma, and it takes up a lot more space on my work area. I have tried a test print this morning and it worked Ok. The touch screen is a lot smaller than that on the Canon Pixma TS 9060, so if you have fat finger syndrome, like me, there are going to be some problems. Hopefully, over the long run, I will save a bit of money by not having to buy ink cartridges. But this printer will have to last a few years to achieve its cost benefit curve of savings. I have registered the printer on the Brother website. This site appears to be quite good, and I will be interested to see if their technical support is as good as Canon.
More comments to come after I have read the instruction book fully and have tried the wi-fi connectivity.
Update. So far so good. This printer is proving to be a versatile piece of equipment. Printing speed and quality is good. No problems so far. The Brother website seems to be very good too. So far I have used the copying / printing and scanning functions by usb connection. I haven't managed to get around to trying the wi-fi functionality yet. I doubt very much if I'll ever use the fax functionality. E mail has pretty well killed that off.

Dead just after warranty – Bought this early Sept 21 and dead mid sept . Won't turn on. Didn't even get to finish the first cartridge. Would not have printed more than 100 pages in a year and now it is DEAD! Looks like I am not the only one by reading the reviews. Don't bother , don't waste your money . Never again Brother. UNRELIABLE POOR PRINTER DO NOT BUY IT – I needed to buy a new printer during the pandemic. There were not many printers avaialable. Officeworks recommended this brother printer. many times with no improvement. Their cartridges say they are good for 3000 prints. i have never had more than 2000 prints ever
Would be a higher rating if it would always turn on – I have not found any problems with the output from the printer. The only problem is getting it to turn on. I press the on button but if my press is too short or too long the printer will start up and can be heard running. However the light to show the printer is on stays off and any print job sent will not print. There is no way to turn it off… Read more
using the on/off button. The only solution is for me to get up and physically remove the power plug form the power outlet. At this point I can hear the printer turn off. Plugging the power cord back in to the power outlet makes the printer start up and the green on light comes on. The printer will function normally. As the printer is not at my work desk, having to get up to unplug it to get it work is a pain. I will be returning the printer to the place of purchase to be sent away for repair or replacement. Hopefully someone at Brother will realise that the best on/off switches are rocker switches and not push button.

page per minute). The scanner leaves wide margins unscanned. On top of it all, output from the expensive toner cartridges is awful, way below the quoted performance figures. Brother have really dropped the ball with this product, they used to make decent machines.

Some say it is noisy - I find it ok Does the scanner skew the pages? Only if they are not put into the feeder correctly or the pages are not smoothly sliding upon each other due to a staple having been removed

is slow and noisy both single and double sided and no matter how hard I try at least one page or more will always be slightly or very askew. I can get nowhere near the 3000 pages promised from each toner cartridge even when I set most documents to toner save. 1000 pages would be more like it. Generic cartridges do not work. There is very little warning that the toner is about to run out. Despite all attempts including a call to Brother's helpline I have not managed to get the remote printing working. The technician blamed my computer but the computer is brand new. Will think twice before buying another Brother product. Their quality has clearly dropped badly in the past few years.
Great Printer, OK scanner – Pro's - Print quality - Speed - wifi works well Cons - scanning is crooked using the auto document feeder. I thought it was just me but it's a common complaint. - printer is noisy - expensive original consumables, fortunately I found a supplier of generic toner supercheap. This is a very good printer, a little bit noisy though – This printer is really good, I have been using it for about 2 years I had no problem with it. I am happy with the printing speed, quality, and efficiency. It is a little bit noisy though. All in all, a good printer for a small office or personal use.
Won’t Scan from Printer - Can’t find computer – Has anyone else had this issue? 12 hours with support, remote in and no solution. Was told to remove Nortons, I did. Finally I was told to go buy a new MacBook Air. Not happy. Still waiting a response from the Good Guys. On a lighter note it prints and copies well. very use friendly and have not had any problem with it straight out of the box. Best purchase of a printer I’ve ever had. Never had any Jamming problem, the auto feeder works perfectly. Occasionally the auto feeder does not scan straight, but that’s the only complaint. Fully satisfied and happy customer. Thank you Brother for making a fantastic product

had issues getting it to work on my new computer. I called HP's help desk but the HP was out of warranty they wouldn't help me. I had an old brother printer and called their help desk and even though it was 5 years old they talked me through how to set it up on my new computer. So that's why I only now buy Brother.
