Canon Pixma MegaTank G660

Finally – This printer has been around since mid 2021 and it was one of the first 6 colour Ink tank printer to be manufactured by Canon. I figure they should have sorted out some of the early problems by now so let's see. The reason I purchased this was to replace my Epson 8700 ,still on warranty but now in the bin with the red lid. I believe that Epson, in an update may have rendered this useless as I was using third party inks , and at this point I was fed up with Battling with the printer .

So, I went back to Canon.

I have had plenty of printers over the years a 9000 and a 9500 recently a 8760 and a PRO 10 all from Canon, all at some stage drove me to despair and the raw cost of ink was getting out of hand . Enter the G660 , I nearly went back to a 1500 from Epson, then realized it was ink carts and I did want to go through that mess again, Ilooked at the Epson 8500 EcoTank but it cost an extra $280 so made little sense. The thing that sold me on this was. 6 Ink tanks I could replace the print heads for around $86.00 I could replace the maintenance tray for $15.00 In other words I was saving money . Now, I still have my Epson ET4850 for scanning and document printing , so this one will be for photos only. I had a number of photos printed on my pro machines and had a ready made comparison of the prints. To be honest I could not tell the difference, the prints on this are superb.

Colour accuracy is almost spot on and I have included a comparison of three test photos , the top one from the Epson 4850, showing a fog over the print and lightness in the black , the second , from the Epson 8700 showing a golden suntan to the print, which , using Epson's ICC profiles was disturbing ,it should be more accurate than this. The last from the G660 using Canon supplied profiles ,in this case the Photo Gloss 2 which rendered near perfect. I did try the fine art profile on some photo rag in letter size I have from Hahnemuhler using a profile they supply for the pro 200 and it was better than the canned profile for fine art paper supplied by Canon, also a Semigloss 8X10 from Canon using a Canon profile which turned in the most accurate result in the colours rendered.

Also, one photo sitting next to my monitor to show the accuracy in the colour print, although I had to deal with reflections and pixels to do that, but you get the idea, it's pretty good and that was printed on Canon Pro Platinum Gloss using the Photo Paper Plus Gloss 2 profile.. A couple of things here, there are no bells and whistles on this printer, the scanner is just Ok and the speed is slow. None the less I am printing photos , so for me it's perfect. I will not use third party inks on this , the cost difference is around $50.00 but spread over the claimed 3,800 4X6 it is a drop in the ocean . I reminded myself that the printer came with a full set of Ink tanks ,that in itself will cost you around $150.00 , but as I said that's a lot of years without buying ink. Printer resolution is 4800X1200 dpi with2304 nozzles, it has one back tray for all paper and the paper exits at the front, which means it is a straight feed so the paper is not going through a bend to get to the printer heads of which there are two. We also have one USB port if you want to connect the printer via cable but the WIFI (2.4ghz)did not give me any hassles this time round and connected to the computer alongside it with two attempts and the computer in the back of my house at the first attempt. Connecting to a smartphone , your required to download the app and it worked straight away. Just remember to set your country and area in the dialogue box during setup as I think this was the reason it did not connect first go. You can also download software with the link provided by Canon in the setup. The printer should be registered and you get access to the online support setup and One year full replacement warranty. At this point a highly recommended printer , with the majority of maintenance in the hands of the buyer with a low cost , and if your like me you will buy the replacement print heads and the maintenance tray now rather than wait a few years when you will probably pay double. Mind you I would not buy any extra ink for this until needed .
