Comsol 45W 4 port USB charger has 4 ports but they share the 45W between them – Recently bought a Comsol 45W 4 port USB charger to charge my Dji batteries. I needed a more beefy charger than the phone charger and wanted to be able to charge multiple devices in parallel. Initially thinking this charger will fit my purpose because user community recommends charger should be 30W+, lest charging will be very slow. I thought 45W… Read more

may fit well and may be gentle on the batteries. However, a few unpleasant things I learnt from this experience.

1. Most charger publish total output. When more than a one device is plugged in, it won't produce the same amount of power but share the 45W across the ports, and not usually evenly. Read on.. 2. Each port is likely to have a different output. This is not limited to Comsol but all manufacturers do this. For example, the Belkin 108W USB charger's 4 ports are broken down into a 65W usb-c, a 30W usb-c and two usb-a ports sharing 12W between them. If only one device is plugged into the 65W usb-c port, then you could get 96W max. Likewise, the Cygnett 45W 4 port charger does the same, ports are labelled 45W, 45W, 20W, 20W, but they total to 45W altogether.

As usb has become a well adopted standard such that all mobile phones are supposed to use the same standard and not demand a specialised charger they used to need. There are many power boards that have usb ports built in, just not very juicy in most cases. Therefore, I assume many might have a number of weak usb charger lying around at home nowadays. What I need is a strong charger that charges multiple power hungry devices at the same time. However, for someone else, this maybe the perfect solution, having one charger that does both large and small devices, saves on power, desk-space and money, perhaps.

Anyway, I ultimately returned this charger because one of the ports failed at the get go - the 45W usb-c port didn't register any charge at all. Its neighbours - the 45W usb-a and smaller siblings usb-a and usb-c ports work and work on the device I tried it on, helping me to eliminate the problem being the cable or device being charged. I bought a beefier and simpler Comsol 100W usbc power adapter instead which works perfectly so far.

In short, think about your use case and read very carefully the output of each port!
