DJI OM 4
Verified2 reviews
Bad for Android users – I purchased a DJI OM 4 late last year (2020) to use with my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, Australian Model. At the time of purchase, I did not see any clear or definitive information on packaging in-store stating that the DJI OM 4 functionally is severely limited on Android when compared to iOS. In the time that I have owned this, I have never really been happy with it. Tracking never really worked well, and the video modes are very limited. The DJI marketing material shows much better videos than what I have even come close to being able to reproduce on my Samsung Galaxy Note 20. **Video recording is limited to a maximum of 30fps in any resolution and selectable modes are very few.
Out of curiosity, I thought I might just give my daughters iPhone X (10) a try. Finally, I was able to see how good the DJI OM 4 can be. Tracking worked almost flawlessly and I could select 4K60 video to record my footage in. I noticed that there were now 4 different frame rates to choose from, and I could select from the recording modes that are native to iOS, not just a couple of modes DJI deemed to be acceptable, like on Android.
So now I have 2 choices, buy an iPhone, or put the DJI OM 4 in my storage cupboard and forget about using it with my android device. Such a waste of money.
I emailed the above concerns, almost verbatim, to DJI support. Below, is the exact response I received from them. I have removed the support persons name because that person is just doing thier job and following a policy or procedure in thier reply to me.
---------------- DJI Response ------------------- Dear Kurt,
Thank you for contacting DJI Technical Support.
In regards to your inquiry, we do understand your concerns, while due to the large number of Android phone models, different Android models have different levels of development for third-party interfaces. To ensure the stability of video shooting, OM 4 currently does not support using Android devices to shoot videos at a high frame rate.
Please see the attached file for detailed information about the supported devices and the corresponding features. Your kind understanding is appreciated in advance.
We really appreciate the time and efforts you have invested in providing these suggestions and feedback to us. Your feedback will be definitely cascaded to the concerned team for their further review. Please stay tuned for more updates through our official website. Apologize again.
Thanks for choosing DJI and have a great day. Best regards, **Support Persons Name Goes Here** DJI Technical Support Website: http://www.dji.com/support YouTube: http://s.dji.com/DJI-Tutorials ---------------- DJI Response -------------------
If you intend to use this with an iOS device, I do recommend it. If you intend to use it with an android device, don't waste your money. If DJI decide to ever bring the Android functionality in line with iOS, then it would be a different story.
**NOTE: You can use the camera app of your choice with the DJI OM 4 however, you can only use the full gimbal functions when using the camera that is contained within the DJI app. The DJI OM 4 basically becomes a glorified mini selfie-stick/tripod with partial stability control outside of the DJI app.
Purchased in at Officeworks for $239.
Youtube and other review sites are misleading – This review also for the om3 as they are the same except for the magnetic clamp. I have owned 2 other gimbals prior to briefly getting my hands on the OM4 and returning it to the store. I have used the Zhiyun Smooth Q and DJI Osmo mobile 2. I was excited about the om4 as i researched before buying and everyone is saying good things about it like it is the gold standard for mobile phone gimbals. I was shocked to find otherwise....
Stabilization is good. The software is alright. The magnet is good but if someone is to bump on your phone while it is on tje gimbal, it can fall smash into the ground. The clamp is narrow for a lot of phone cases so you risk gimbaling your phone without a case and it falling off the gimbal. The clamp also does not expand wide enough to fit larger phones if they have cases in them. So yes you risk smashing your $1000 phone without its case when using the gimbal.
But what shocked me the most is the limited movements you can get with the motor design. Tilt lock only works within a small range of movements. When you go over that tilt range, it will switch follow mode with the tilt and if you go back to the normal tilt range, it will still stay looking up or down as it will revert back to tilt lock.
Doing crane ups is also fraustrating. It will tilt down when you do crane ups even with tilt lock. With this, you can not do low shots then crane ups too.
Spin shots are not 360s. They only do around half circle i think.
So basically, this gimbal is good for walking, running, and panning. Those are the only shots they do in those youtube reviews. If this is your first gimbal then you might not notice these faults i said as you dont know what u are missing. Personally i will stick to the osmo 2 and smooth q. They have less restrictions whith movements. I suggest trying it out first in store before buying.
