Why are my lights that charge flash and my dc16 machine wont run
Our Dyson DC16 with motor head, when it is turned on only runs for about 5 seconds the turns off. I have cleaned the filters and it is fully charged. Any reason?
This machine, having being launched over a decade ago is a retired model for Dyson and while we'll be more than happy to help with troubleshooting the issue, we're afraid we've permanently exhausted our stock of spare parts - so if parts are required, this may not be something that can be solved.
We'd encourage you to email us at auaskdyson@dyson.com with a detailed description of the issue, the serial number and your contact information and we'll see what options we can offer.
I have a dc16 and the 25 amp fuse on the motor pcb failed so I soldered in a new one and reassembled the vacuum and as soon as I put the battery in it blew the new one as well, I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to help diagnose the problem or if anyone has had a similar problem. Any help is appreciated? thanks!
I have just cleaned a Dyson DC16 handheld, washed the filter and out it all back together, but now fater trying to recharge it, all three (two red and one green) of the charge lights are flashing.
I was very careful to to get any of the electrics wet during cleaning, but this error/fault has never occurred before on trying to re-charge the machine?
Does this indicate that something has not been put back together quite correctly......nothing about this in the manual, so very confusing?
Hi there, Thank you for your query. I am sorry to hear your DC16 has three flashing lights and isn't working. So we can best assist, we would kindly ask for you to forward your details to auaskdyson@dyson.com and our Dyson Experts will be in touch.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Briand, This is a weird one; my old Dyson has never done anything like that before (I bought it way back in 2009). I would suggest you clean the battery contacts thoroughly, if that doesnt work, try dissasembling and reassembling the machine and see what happens then. If the problem still occurs, I would contact Dyson's service dept. I've found them to be very helpful.
My DC16 was working OK then today when I plugged it in to charge the red light stays on for a minuet or so then it starts flashing, any idea what the problem is? Regards
Hi David, I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with charging your DC16. So we can further assist, I would encourage you to email our Dyson Experts via askdyson@dyson.com.au, and we will be in touch as soon as possible.

David, I'd check/clean battery & charger contacts first. If this doesn't work, I'd suspect the battery, especially if it is getting old. I haven't experienced this problem with my DC16, but I did have to change a battery under warranty a few years ago. Dyson were very helpful when I contacted them, and actually informed me the battery was under warranty and sent me another one very promptly. If this doesn't work, I would contact Dyson's service dept for assistance.
Do you sell the charger for the Dyson handheld DC16? if so, what is the cost? As it is discontinued and reviews are not good, will it work?
Hi Judy, Thanks for your question. Apologies for any disappointment, however as the DC16 is a retired machine, we no longer have stock of the chargers or other parts for it. Please email us at askdyson@dyson.com.au along with your machine's serial number and your contact details, and we will let you know if there are any alternative options or special offers available for you.
Best wishes,
Mira

I have the same problem with mine, and Dyson have offered me a 25% discount on a new unit, which is still well over $200! Being an electronics technician, I decided to open the plug pack and found a shorted transistor and blown fuse. Replacing these has fixed the charger. Perhaps a local tech may have the motivation to have a look at it for you. The parts cost me less than $4.00! It is ridiculous that these things are sealed and therefore made to be virtually unrepairable. I used a small Dremel saw to carefully cut the plug pack open along the glue line. Certainly DO NOT attempt this unless you are qualified, as the voltages are dangerous!
Cheers.
I have a DC 16 working perfectly but now the charger 28V power supply has failed. Dyson local service centre cheerfully informs me that they "no longer stock the part". From posts above it seems to be a common problem. This is a very simple non-Dyson part for a rather expensive and not so old machine. Anyone found a workaround or someone with stock or a Chinese equivalent or...
Sorry, no answer to that.
Do you have substitute item similar to this DC16 filter pad?
Hi Quang, Thanks for your question. The DC16 pre-filter is a specific shape & design created especially for this product which is now obsolete and unavailable. Our other handheld models filters are now located in another component of the machine, in the top of the cyclone shroud, and are a conical shape which will not fit a DC16. We are sorry for any disappointment this may cause.
Best wishes, Taryn

Technical question here. I have been "playing"with an old dc16 which had a 240v / 28 volt battery charger unit. I purchased a new charger unit (for a newer model) and find it is only 26.1 volts output. This probably means I may not be fully charging my battery. Is there another Dyson unit that uses a 28 Volt battery charger?
Just measured voltage (with no load) on my dc16 original charger and it was 27.7V. What I don't know if the charger has any "smart" logic built into it ie to manipulate voltage levels for different charging stages.
We have a DC16 animal that has been cutting out periodically for a long time but now won't even charge, the red & green lights don't come on. How do we know if this is a battery fault or a charger fault or the cleaner itself?
With mine my daughter had the same one...I tried her battery and charger still the same with mine it's the machine without a doubt...Dyson used to be excellent now their just hit and miss and the company is full of excuses when approached by customers...you only have to read the forums.

I find it interesting that your recommendation on every question is to contact your help line. This is the response I got, so I did contact the help line. The "solution" given to me is to buy a newer model at a 30% discount. The power supply for the charger has failed, so I'm supposed to throw away a $500.00 unit and buy another. A replacement power supply should cost around $20.00 to $50.00. I was born at night, guys, but NOT last night. Dyson has remarkable ideas for moving air around. It's a shame he can't be bothered to ensure manufacturing is at least average, instead of totally hopeless. You've lost another customer, guys, and I hope enough people see the light and stay far away from Dyson products.

We have a DC58Animal handheld unit - does the accessory tool kit for the DC16 fit our DC58?
I havent seen the 58 so I cant give you a definitive answer, sorry.
Hi Pep, Thank you for your question. If you are referring to the Cordless Tool Kit: external link then yes this is compatible with both the DC16 and the DC58. Best wishes, Samuel external link
My dc16 sucks but not in a vacuum cleaner way.
Have used it only about 20 times ,the battery last about
5 to 10 seconds or less.
I am a wear of the battery problem as well as you are. It is junk.
My question is will you replace the unit with a newer model.
What do i do?
Will not put any money in this unit based on what I have read.
Hi Vince, I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your machine. While we are aware there are numerous reviews citing the battery at fault, our helpline system monitors all faults reported and this has not been found to be a common problem. For further assistance please email askdyson@dyson.com.au and we will be in touch.
Best wishes,

My DC16 runs for about 8 seconds then stops, I push the switch again and it runs for another 6 or 8 seconds. Not enough time to pick anything up. I would get another battery, but I just want to make sure it's not a waste of time and money. We have it plugged in all of the time. Based on alot of the comments I have been reading I'm starting to rethink my perception of the quality of Dyson products. Thank you for your help in advance.
This is best answered by looking at the earlier post from Marc38 who said that he had fitted a replacement battery, but it made no difference. The sort of performance that you get is pretty well the same as I get. Next to useless performance.
I must say I am surprised at all the problems people have had, we have had a DC16 for nearly 6 years and I have just replaced the battery for the first time. Only other problem was the power supply failed after 3 years but with the 5 year warranty Dyson replaced it very quickly by mail.
I bought my DC16 in 2007 and it worked tirelessly without fault until 2012. The symptoms then were similar to yours. A call to Dyson identified it as a fault battery and they offered to send out a replacement free of charge (mine was out of warranty). It then worked fine for another 1.5 years until earlier this year. Symptoms this time were flashing lights during charging but no lights on trigger and no motor activity. Dyson identified this as a faulty head unit which would cost around AUD130. Alternatively they offered a discount off the RRP of a new model.
Mine was doing the same and it turned out to be the charger.
