Green light on when press but vacuum not working
My Dyson works very well, holds charge, but will only remain 'on' for about 10 seconds before stopping. You can press the trigger again and it will go for another 10 secs then cuts out, this sequence can be repeated throughout the life of one battery charge. I have tried cleaning the contacts, but this makes no difference. Any ideas?
While the Dyson DC34 is now retired we no longer have an availability of spare parts, we'd still encourage you to contact us to for an opportunity to troubleshoot and diagnose this issue, and offer some ideas and other options for you.
Our Dyson Experts are available via auaskdyson@dyson.com and happy to help. Please just forward your query, the serial number of your machine and details.
We hope to hear from you and look forward to assisting.
We have a Dyson DC34.. When I plug the charger into the mains, the green charging light comes on for about one minute then goes off. There is residual charge in the battery such that when I press the trigger on the machine, it will run for a few seconds (with a green light showing around the MAX button on the rear face of the machine).
How do I tell whether the charger is at fault or if it's the battery that needs replacing?
Hi Jeff, Thank you for your question. The charger light will turn off to indicate the machine is fully charged. It sounds like the battery may need to be replaced in this case however there are further diagnostics we'd like to run through with you.
Please contact our helpline on 1800 239 766 with your machine handy or email your details through to aucustomercare@dyson.com. Our helpline is open Monday - Friday 8am - 7pm and Saturday - Sunday 8:30am - 4pm EST.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, does anyone know if I can use my wand and motorhead from my dc35 vacuum for a dc 34 handheld?
Hi Jules, Thank you for your query. We do apologise for any disappointment, however due to electrical differences between the DC34 and DC35, the wand and floor tool are not suitable for the DC34 machine.
If we can assist further, please email auaskdyson@dyson.com and we will be happy to assist further.
Best wishes,
Shan
How can I check the charger is working?
Hi Shirley, Thank you for your question. If you plug the charger into the machine you should see a small green LED appear on the charger. If this is not the case our recommendation would be to try a different powerpoint.
If the LED is still not illuminating on the charger this may indicate a replacement is required. A replacement charger can be ordered for $30 with free postage from external link .
Best wishes,

I have a DC34. 3 years ago, it stopped working. For some reason, I kept it. About a year ago, I was about to throw it out when I pulled the trigger by accident. It worked????!!!! I had thrown out the charger so I bought a new one. It has worked perfectly but a week ago, it stopped again. I measured the voltage across the +/- terminals and got about 24V. I guess the battery is charging OK. However i got no reading across any combination of the 3 contacts (I wish I knew what they were for) at the back of the battery. Should I wait another couple years and hope for divine intervention again or should I chuck it this time. The motor could have gone but it seems like a long shot.
I too have the DC 34. A couple of months ago it started going off intermittently, which was very annoying. I had read several "answers" to similar problems and did the same tests that you carried out, albeit the reading across terminals. If I'm reading your "question" correctly, it shouldn't show any current as you would have to take off the battery to get to them. However, if you can muster another pair of hands try the same combinations for a resistance test (you need a multimeter), the other pair of hands would need to operate the switch, otherwise unless you are very good at balancing things, you will lose contact if you try pulling the trigger whilst touching the terminals. The vacuum fairy didn't visit us, because now ours has finally given up the ghost (7 to 8 years old). I'm mulling over getting a new battery, even though we replaced the DC 34, although we kept it, with a V6. but we've found it isn't as good with very fine ash around our combustion heaters, it's great at picking up, but the smaller cyclone tubes get partially blocked with a hard layer of accumulated ash and it's a devil of a job cleaning it out. I've managed it but it was very frustrating. The V6 is an amazing piece other than that problem.
Hi, did you try the trick I wrote somewhere on this forum? What happens is those 3 contacts get pushed in and don't make contact with the other end so power cuts out intermittently. Try pulling those 3 contacts out a little so they make better contact with the other side. Test out if the vac stops working when being held in different directions (ie - mine would work when pointed upward though not downward) so I knew it was a contact problem not a battery problem. Hope that works for you???
Hi Lucia, Thanks for your reply. I did read your previous comment and immediately tried it. Sadly no success. As I suspected a loose connection, I also tried turning it in all directions and even shaking it. I did think of kicking it but stopped short of that. By the way, do you know what the 3 contacts are for. I tried measuring for a voltage over them but got no reading.
Thanks for your reply Kieth2. I did take the battery out and took the measurement across the +/- contacts. it read 24V. I will wait a bit longer on the vacuum fairy - at least until I see a good price on Ebay or Amazon. I might try a Black and Decker model. My daughter has one and it works well. The advantage of the Dyson is that due to the higher battery voltage, it works longer, at least long enough to vacuum the car.

My Dyson dc34 has just stopped working. After putting on charge it still doesn't work. The green lights are flashing slowly which I think indicates that the battery is discharged but the green light on the charger doesn't come on which suggests the battery is fully charged !! Confused. Can somebody help?
check the connections that connect the battery to the motor. take out the battery section at the back and clean the metal connections with a dry cloth and pull the 3 metal lines out slightly, i used a tweezer to get under them and pulled each one out slightly. on mine they were pushed flat too much and the metal wasnt touching the metal. hope that helps!
Hi Elmsy, Thanks for your question. If you have no light at all when it's plugged into the charger; and when the machine is off the charger the machine has slow flashing when the trigger is pulled, this suggests your charger is no longer providing any charge and would need to be replaced.
The charger is available here: external link

Hi folks, Mine is doing exactly the same as yours, Elmsy. However, as I've already purchased a replacement, I won't do anything else, mainly because there were other slight problems, which indicated it was on its way to the Knackers' Yard. When something as good as the Dyson DC 34 starts going wrong after such a good innings, I would much rather pay once off for a better replacement, rather that try to revive something, which is hit and miss. I think the proof of this is in the last but one paragraph starting with, "If this does not resolve the issue.....". Dyson, themselves are unsure and are telling you, their best (educated) guess, so it may or may not resolve it. If not then the old parable, don't throw good money after bad", comes into play, because in the end you may pay just as much but don't get the advantage of the newer technology. Another pun, "Bite the Bullet".
Thanks for your replies. I can borrow a charger from a friend so I'll start there first.
Hi. are you able to buy a stick attachment to go with the DC34. Mine is 2 years old but I have been having back problems of late and would like to be able to get a stick attachment.
Hi Diane, Thank you for your question. The wand/ pole extension of certain V6 machines may connect into your DC34 however, the motor design is different and not compatible to be used this way, you run the risk of blowing the motor on your DC34 by attaching a wand/ pole. For the reason listed, we won't sell them to Handheld unit owners as we do not want to risk having an inferior product in your hands, not to mention that this possess a safety issue.
We hope you understand and are sorry for any disappointment this may cause.
Best wishes, Taryn

Has anyone used the additional hand held tool kit from Dyson with the DC34? What do you think of it? Is it worth another $100?
Hi Maisy, Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, I can not answer for other people but this is a great tool kit if you would like some additional tools for your hand held machine. It comes with the following tools.
The Soft dusting brush: the soft bristles gently remove dust and allergens from flat surfaces and furniture.
The Stubborn dirt brush: with stiff bristles for removing mud and dried-in dirt.
Wide nozzle tool: removes dust and dirt from upholstery and the floor.
Extendable hose: extends up to 1.2m
You can view and purchase the toolkit on external link .
We hope this has satisfactorily answered your query.
Best wishes,
Samuel
