Holden Astra Questions & Answers
VerifiedHi, has anyone had any issues with the electrics in their Astra? I have a 2018 LTZ (bought new). About 6 months ago, turning a corner and lost all power, managed to roll to side of road. was able to start car again. Last week whilst driving home, screen for the radio etc, went blank - could still hear the radio, was blank for a couple of minutes. Then yesterday tried to start, dashboard indicated that car had started etc. but it hadn't. got in and out of car to start process again to no avail (a couple of different times) could still charge phone etc. just engine wouldn't fire up. Then about 30 minutes later it started - got me buggered.

After experiencing the same issue with the pistons on my 2018 Holden Astra I have decided to look into organising a class action. I have also been quoted $6500 + to replace the engine. Anyone that has experienced this issue please email me. To start the class action process we need at minimum of 7 people. Email is holdenclass@outlook.com
hey Jamie - I have sent you an email
Hi anyone know where I can get my hands on a workshop manual for a 2020 , Holden Astra BK model, seems difficult to find a manual which covers the specific model believe they are Opel /Holden . Cheers
I have a 2017 Astra R Hatchback, which I purchased 8 months ago from the original owner. The car has only done 85,000km now and still had warranty on it until the end of this year. Last week I felt vibration in the car when driving and then last Friday, when stopped at traffic lights, the engine light and a car swerving light came on. I immediately pulled over and phoned my husband. Long story short, we contacted the dealership where the car was purchased new. They have the car now and told us it has a cracked piston. They told us it can not be driven. We live 20 minutes from Geelong and had no car, so GM have kindly given us a hire car to use. I contacted their Customer Care and the Dealership did also requesting a hire care as the Geelong Dealership doesn't have courtesy cars. We found out from the Dealership, the warranty on the car is extended warranty through Alliance Insurance. The Warranty through GM has ended. So it is up to Alliance whether they will pay for the car to be fixed, which is going to cost $6,500. Now we have found out that the previous owner breached the warranty as they didn't get the car serviced at regular periods. We have been told they won't honour the warranty to repair. I have contacted GM Customer Care with the hope they will pay for repairs as I have found out the cracked piston is caused (as it is well documented) because of faulty pistons used. GM changed to a different piston because of this problem.
I would love to know how many others have faced this same issue and what was your outcome. Was there any recalls because of faulty pistons? If we had known about this 8 months ago, we would never have purchased this car. Even the Dealership has told us they have had quite a few Astra brought in with this issue.
hi there we have experienced the same problem. Very disappointed with Holden Customer Care. Did you have any success? thank you
Hi, No success, Holden Customer Care said they won't pay for repairs. Also Allianz who are responsible for extended warranty have also said they won't pay. So a car we have only owned for 8 months is going to cost us $6,500 to repair. It is not fair!
I am experiencing the same issue now but not under warranty. The company that sold it to me didn't tell me engine light comes on and just ran out of warranty the month I brought it.
I guess we have both been ripped off as the piston problem was a known issue by Holden. I have done research and found that the pistons used in our cars were known to be faulty, but nothing was done and now we have both had to pay so much money just to have a car to drive. As Holden is no longer made, I feel GM have deserted all people in Australia who still own GMH cars here.
What do u think about starting a class action with me? As alot of people have the same problem in the uk with holden/opel. Same model with lpsi issues, cracked pistons.
Hi Leish, I would love to, but have no idea how much it would cost.
Hey sweet someone above is wanting people to email to start a class action as this model astra should have 100% been recalled as i have researched and so many people have had the same problem
Looks like a class action is needed then. I will contact the person you mentioned and suggest you do too. I feel there are a lot of people who have gone through the same problem. It cost us $7000 to get our car repaired even though we were still under extended warranty. GMH would not repair our car under warranty, even though the piston issue was a recognised fault. I thought we had no hope because GMH are such a big company, we felt intimidated by them. Now I can see maybe we can all stand up and say we have been treated badly. I am going to contact the other person now.
Hi I have just picked my Astra up from the mechanics as I had idling issues and scanner first showed fault in cylinder 4. It has piston issues as my mechanic has changed the coil, plugs etc and then found the piston is stuffed and I have to replace the engine. Car has only done 65,000 kms. I paid $15,000 for it 2 years ago. I am not happy.
Hi, I can definitely see why you are not happy, just as others like me and my husband have been having to pay so much money to get our cars repaired and GMH have turned their backs on us. I don't know why you have to replace the engine as piston 3 in our Astra went, but they only replaced that one and the engine was fine. We now have a two year warranty on that piston. We were told that piston 3 went because of overheating, but when doing some research, it was known that the pistons were actually faulty. The cars should have been recalled, but instead many of us are faced with paying out thousands. If we had known about this, we would never have purchased our Astra, which we bought privately for $15,500. A person tried to start a class action against GMH, but the lawyers approached said the money involved for each person, wasn't worth them taking on the case. I don't think they realise just how many cars have been affected around the world. I can't remember the lawyers, but it was one of those that advertise, no win, no fees. They don't care about the little man, all they care about is how much money they will make. As for GMH, look how big that company is, but they are certainly not there when it comes to helping those who drive their Astras that have known faults. My husband and I are pensioners and having to pay so much money to get our car repaired has had a big affect on our finances and ability to enjoy life.
Is there a boot release leaver in the 2017 BK RS?? I've been looking for it for 7 years! Hahahah
Hi there, diagnostic com tells me there is an issue with a knock sensor, but having trouble buying a new one, has any one else had this problem? Has anyone had any luck with a compatible part?
Hi I have a BL LS+ 2018. It feels very hot to touch the bonnet after short 10KL drive in cool weather. The bonnet and top of the plastic cover on the motor also takes an hour or more to cool down. The temperature gauge reads normal. It has coolent in it. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you in advance
Astra's heat up quickly. When you turn the car off they heat soak. Engine cover is a part of the engine. It will get hot! If the temperature is normal, the car is at it normal operating temperature!
PSA Don't touch the bonnet after you have driven the car!
Thanks Paul!! After further investigation I realised the Turbo is just under the bonnet and there is no padding under the bonnet to absorb the heat with this model, which I wasn't used to. Apparently it's normal. Which is great I just hope it holds up in hotter weather.

Hi, is there any other way to see my engine tempeture on my 2005, other than just a warning light that pops up just before you the thing up. Or do I have to fit a after market gauge to ready constant temp? Outstanding they don't come stock with a tempeture gauge.
Could someone be able too tell me where I can get a 2018 Holden Astra RSV Rocker cover from?
Good luck. I had one fitted from an ex Holden dealership. $2200.

What year is you car? And what size motor? info@courtenaysport.co.uk Email this place they can get them for you.
Your car*
It should only cost you about $840 Australian dollars for the part including shipping! Part number is 55596087
I too was quoted $1550 from a holden dealer + fitting . Thankfully it comes with the gasket that Holden charge $170 for .
You can buy one from overseas for $840 and gasket comes with it! Fitting shouldn't cost anymore the $400.

I got the plastic PCV unit from ali express for $125 delivered . Another $150 for a new gasket from Holden and did it myself . Loctite was used on the bolts that hold the PCV in . RTV was used in 3 spots to make a good seal . Not a simple job as you need to remove the ignition coils and high pressure fuel lines .
I've had the same problem and got quoted $1500 for an after market parts rocket cover
