frustrating to use. works here and there – trying to print. not printing. connecting wirelessless... sometimes. and the HP photosmart app is also equally frustrating to use. On the plus side, it prints documents sometimes. I'd suggest avoiding this printer. I got given it for free. Show details

Great unit – I've had this unit for years and cannot fault it. It prints, scans, copy documents, photos etc. Not sure about all the negative comments, but this unit is great for our multiple use needs. My only gripe is really about the cost of cartridges.  Show details

only gave it a 1 because there is no 0 – Just don't waste your money ! worked for the first few weeks then never again, will print lines but not text and now I have learnt that its incompatible with some Mac OS programmes, useless.

I had some problem “BLACK RUNS OUT” – I bought new cartridges, the colour works and in the black doesn’t, how could that be possible, you would think it all works or it doesn’t, I think the copiers are built/made for that to happen, so that we get ripped off again by paying over $100 that goes down the drain and someone else profits from it, that’s people for you. Only one name for them “Scum of the earth”. Show details

Lasted approx 4 years but Wireless software failed eventually – This was an impulse/grudge purchase approx 4-5 years ago, and we had a pretty similar run to most here for such a cheap printer, it got light home use of mostly colour printing school kids assignments, printing a few forms etc along with a little bit of photo printing and some scanning and copying. This printer sure likes to use ink, and the ink… Read more

ain't cheap but we didn't have any issues with clogged nozzles or paper misalignment that other had, but always used genuine HP cartridges so this isn't the cheapest printer in the world to own over the life of the printer, the printer itself was actually pretty reliable, and the scanner did fine but we found that the Wireless network software (and installed bloatware) became increasingly problematic where the printer would always "forget" it was connected to a standard stable NBN wireless home network, and eventually refused to communicate with any computer wirelessly, although USB connections with Windows PCs is still fine.

The HP software was never really happy or stable in the Windows environment with a few update and software bugs that needed ironing out and also now refuses to "play nice" with any Linux or Chromebook devices so thats a deal breaker, probably a combination of planned obsolescence and lack of software support means this will be binned or become a second printer shortly.

Terrible difficult – I have struggled to get this printer to work. One minute it works wonderfully (one paper scan or print) and then that's it. I have to uninstall reinstall. set default settings, reconnect internet and move it to a different location. Bought an internet extender plug you name it then it works once and the hell of a nightmare starts all over. Scan works, scan doesn't work who knows what the hell this is. A complete waste of money if you ask me. Show details

Good & Bad – the printer itself has good features wireless printing from my phones, tablets etc that great not problems here. Scans well and quick but pulls in paper lop sided sometimes. The cartridges wow expensive and god damn i have been working from home for a month during Covid19 lockdowns and i have spent $400 on cartridges this thing eats them up QUICK.… Read more

Thats the only real negative not efficient and very costly to run which is probably all you really want from a printer they all print well these days i guess.

Have owned 2 of these now as good & efficient – I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews for this printer, as I've liked it so much when the first one after a good life, I bought another one second-hand! It's mostly fast (occasionally has a thinking churn), scans well enough for quick recording and you can easily buy cheap no-brand ink for it. Admittedly I never did the wireless to setup,… Read more

and the paper sometimes pulls in crooked, but it does the basic job I need at a basic price. The second one is still going strong 4 years later!

Why oh why won't the black cartridge work! – My printer has been working fine and when the black ran out I replaced it with an hp cartridge. Same problem as I have seen. Black just stops working. Cleaned, realigned heads, off on etc but nothing works. So much money on ink! Difficult to find anyone to help me. On line no good.  Show details

HP Photosmart 5520 – Looking to buy another printer but now wary of HP. Purchased new ink, thinking it would be fine as I had to print out a document. Only black didn’t work. I researched and found it was a common problem! I have tried everything, reloaded software, cleaned the print head, and also tried to clean the print head with a cleaning solution.… Read more

The ink seems to be getting through but there seems to be something disallowing it.

I only ever have purchased hp inks.

Wasted heaps of time on it, puts me off buying another printer from HP.

corrected but the quality of the printer when first purchased was awesome but take note always remove your ink cartridges when you're not using your printer so the printer ink won't clog up the jets.

The printer to get if you DON'T want to print – When I bought this printer it worked well and I liked the duplex capability and wireless access. When it stopped printing I bough new expensive printer cartridges which didn't fix the problem....the black ink just wouldn't print. I performed numerous print head cleans, updated printer, printer head alignments and manual cleaning as shown in… Read more

instructional videos...the black just won't print! Now I have $300 worth of crap just out of warranty.

When you google the problem it is evident that this is a major fault in the HP printers and I will never buy HP products ever again!

Great addition to my home office – I had the HP5520 now for a year and it was cheap to buy but as with most printers the cartridges blow a hole in your budget. I use it mainly for normal printing, printing envelopes, scanning documents directly to computer or email and scanning photos. I am sure there are better printers out there but it's performance is good and I did not have any problems with it.  Show details ·  1

Worked well, stopped working, installs bloatware, still not working – It worked well, did everything is should. Then for no apparent reason stopped scanning. Trying to fix it and HP download a ton of bloatware to tell me to use their cartridges but I still can't get it to scan. Why do they do this? Just sell me a printer that works and cartridges at a semi reasonable price and I'll keep buying the product, now I won't touch them again.

I like it – For the price I paid ( $59 ) I think this printer is really good. I have now owned it for over 2 issue free years. It's not only reliable but the features are impressive. People have complained about the high price HP charge for the ink cartridges which I totally agree with. The way I get around this is to purchase generic cartridges on… Read more

eBay for a fraction of the cost.

The only thing I could point out which could be improved is the print quality and this is only when you are using it primarily for printing photos.

Worst Printer I've Ever Had – While the features are nice like WiFi enabled and ePrint, I've spent more money on ink cartridges than the price of the printer x3. It stops printing and although I've tried the head cleaning and alignment procedures it starts again for a while then stops. Have replaced all the cartridges thinking maybe they were duds but it's the printer that's a dud. Had HP printers before and they were good, this one is terrible. Avoid it.

Rubbish - Will Never Touch HP – This printer broke within the first week. Spend ages over the phone and via the internet determining the there was something wrong with the printer. Was going to take another 14 days to get a replacement on a product that was only a week old. I ended up returning it to the store and purchased another one from another store (not sure why). the last 12 months the printer has had constant issues. Regularly having problems trying to print black but can always print colours. Even using genuine inks it may work for a day then not the next.

A month out of warranty it failed completely. Never had a HP printer before and never will again. Rather than the headache of trying to deal with HP again over a crap $80 printer, it was better to just through in the bin and I am now using a Epson which I cant believe how well it works.

I really dislike this printer! – Purchased from JB HI-FI and am not impressed. It's temperamental and so so noisy! You think the paper is in as far as it can go but it still says it's not loaded, so you push it in and then it says there's a jam - it's a fine line!! I loved the feature on my old Epsom that scanned 4 photos as 4 separate images - which this doesn't. I've since… Read more

found they do have models that do, so my fault for not investigating more. I'm not loving it. NB update 20/7/15: Now we've had all sorts off issues with cartridges not lasting anywhere near as long as I think they should and the black cartridge not printing, so often, and saying it's not genuine - it is! OMG, if I could send it airmail out the window - I would! not much very very noisy. paper jams, paper guides very stiff to adjust, not great printing unless you clean printhead etc if it hasn't been used for a while etc etc........

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH! Do not waste your time! – I purchased ink for my HP photosmart 5520 and it arrived on time without an issue, however, after issues with getting my printer to recognise it, I managed to print 4, yes, only 4 pages before it stopped working and the ink was dripping everywhere when I took it out. Worst purchase ever!

built-in obsolescence expired prior to expectancy – well, i have purchased two of these printers now in a period of less than a year; as a printer it worked just fine for the short time i had each. as a scanner, forget it! the first printer scanned okay but broke up any and each A4 sheet into minuscule pieces and each printed separately - didn't work for me. then purchased a second printer, the… Read more

Worst printer I've had – Whilst I've only bought cheap throwaway type printers in the past, they have all lasted long enough to justify their existence. I've mostly had Canon (and will probably go back there) but have had others that do a serviceable job for what we use it for which has been predominately document (not photo) printing. Family type printing - a few pages… Read more

of word, the odd invitation, the odd work PDF is all I need.

This HP seems to go haywire half of the time and then sometimes even print the first half (of say 8 pages) then go haywire.

I was attracted to the ability to print from smart phones. This was quite a clever feature, basically if you can email it you can email it to the printer and it prints it, very good, except when it goes haywire half of the time.

Can't recommend.

I hate this printer – My old trustworthy HP photosmart C6270 broke down after 7 years of service. Was advised the HP Photosmart 5520 was the present day replacement so I bought it. Everytime I use it I feel like smashing my head against the wall. First it takes a really long time to boot. And at random moments, frequent enough (about once every four uses) it… Read more

requires a cartridge alignment test. So this machine prints out the alignment page which is a full coloured page and this page has to be scanned to somehow align the print cartridges. I havent printed 50 pages yet and now I'm out of ink. I understand the ink that comes with the printer is only partially filled but I must've printed the *#+%* alignment page 6 times.

Second, the scanning option of this printer is an absolute pain. There are two options, scan as photo (jpeg) or as a document (PDF). If you scan as a document, it only comes out black and white. If you scan as a photo, it breaks everything into groups of 'images' which comes out as a few photos a scan per document. Drove me absolutely mental when I had to scan coloured forms with my passport photo. Can't scan as document, only b&w, scan as photo and it was saved as 5/6 separate smaller images. Nearly destroy the printer at this stage.

To be honest I have given up on this %#+*%¥# of a printer. I have been using HP for 15 years and this machine changed my opinion of HP. Worse I lost my receipt so I'm stuck w this... thing. Strange I'm doing everything I can not to print documents and I don't scan anything unless my life depends on it.

It's been 2 months plus since I purchased this mistake. Sigh...

Not the best HP I've used to date – Does the job but is noisy and seems to take forever to go through it's setup process when turned on. Compared to previously used compact desktop HP all-in-ones, this one doesn't impress me. It does have extra features, such as it can print to both sides of a page and has wireless, which is the reason I purchased it.

Great wireless printer scanner – I've moved away from using the laptop and now use the ipad for pretty well everything...with the help of some good apps. I bought the HP 5520 to print and scan wirelessly from the ipad. Some of the reviews I read about this model were less than encouraging. BUT this printer is great. I can print straight from the ipad and then scan to email as… Read more

well as use it as a photocopier. It's very easy to use. The print quality is very very good. Better than any other printer we've owned. Price was very good too and I'm still using the original set up cartridges. I think the trick is ...not to follow the instructions on the leaflet too closely. It's easier if you just work out yourself how to set it up. I found the instructions to be not so good. But it's easy to work out how to do it yourself. Well done HP. Easy simple and works via my wifi. Excellent print quality. It was cheap too. Best value for money The written instructions in the box were confusing. Just nut it out for yourself..too easy.

Value for money! – I have yet to believe that HP is a bad brand. Recently purchased this little printer and I absolutely love it. Does the job and is quick and easy to set up. Works perfectly! Only downside is that it is really noisy but nevertheless, if the noise doesn't bother you too much I suggest this printer! Easy to use, quick to set up Noisy

Never even worked - stay away from HP! – We were conned into getting this printer under the pretence that this was a best selling printer, and that hardly any had been returned with faults. We set up the printer according to the instruction manual, installed the cartridges, etc. and went through the set up on the screen. Before it had finished setting up it said 'clear cartridge jam'.… Read more

We followed the 'helpful' instructions on the screen and could see clearly that there was no cartridge jam. The set-up restarted itself, but the cartridge jam error showed again.

Time and time again we tried it, but to no avail. What sort of look is that for HP? Never even got to see the print quality, it couldn't even set itself up correctly! It's gone back to Officeworks, congratulations on their no-questions policy, great customer service there.

I've never had any luck with HP - the last 2 printers we have of theirs (some years ago) died, no explanation given. Since then we have had 2 Canons (in 2 different locations) and they've never given us any trouble and are still going. I thought perhaps HP may have improved, and was willing to give them a go, but obviously not.

Stay away from HP, they're probably the dodgiest printer you're going to get. Stick with Canon, you pay more but they're heaps better. We've just bought another Canon to replace this, from Harvey Norman this time (Officeworks was out of stock) - it set up perfectly and is working fine. Running costs are a bit more, but they just work. Smart looking, inexpensive, compact Never worked, so I don't know any others!

Great for scrunching up paper – I read a review somewhere else online that complained about this printer jamming up. I thought I'd go ahead with my purchase anyway and hope that was rare, but that was a mistake. So far it's trashed more paper and labels than it's printed. Sure the print quality and set up is good, and it works for a while. But once it starts chewing your paper… Read more

Smart Little Printer – Recently purchased this printer to replace my old Canon one. What a great little printer it is! Easy to set up and works like a dream. Prints excellent copies from computer and also excellent colour from photocopy. I haven't printed any photos on it yet. Very easy to operate - highly recommended and good value for money. Seems to be quite economical with the ink cartridges too. Easy to operate, inexpensive.
