I too cannot turn my Miele Warming Drawer ESW 6229 on because the drawer will not close fully.

It seems to be a common issue. Could you please share a solution. If a part must be replaced, please advise the cost.

As a short term solution, I stuck adhesive velcro on left and right sides of the drawer. The velcro holds the drawer closed so it will heat. Not elegant, but it works

Dear Susan S: Thank you for your suggestion. We tried it, and it works. I reckon you've probably saved us about $400.

The gas struts can be re-gassed at small expense by the people who do car boot and bonnet struts. Mine has gone five years so far since re-gassing.

Warning: in some installations the oven sits firmly on top of the warming drawer, so if you pull the drawer out there's going to be quite a crash. Worth checking. Regards, David.

Hi, I have a ESW 5080 Miele Warming drawer: It wouldn't close the last 20 mm or so & hence won't turn on. I removed the Drawer from the wall & removed the cover to locate a piston & plastic connector that connects to the under side of the drawer. The articulating piston & plastic piece are connected to the base of the Drawer Cabinet. It appeared to have disconnected from the drawer, so I re connected the plastic piece & the drawer opened & closed perfectly. I re-assembled the Drawer & put it back in the wall. Unfortunately the plastic piece must have come off the drawer again on the second use & the drawer won't close again?? Has anyone had this problem, is there a cir-clip that hold the plastic arm to the drawer or is there something else?? Thanks in advance.

When hot the metal bottom concaves with a distinct "pop" sound which causes loud rattling when fan is on and scrapping when opening drawer. You can push up the bottom and it will be good for a bit but pops back down eventually. When drawer is off and cooling you can hear the distinct "pop" again as it returns. They call this "oil panning" caused by too thin of metal. How can this be fixed??????? Miele???

Hi Lorie, we are having the same issue with our Miele drawer esw6380. We had it serviced a few times to be told it is a known issue and to remove the rack when using. It still makes the rattling sound but not as loud when we remove the rack. They told us they do not have a solution. Did you happen to find a fix for your drawer? We are very frustrated since the rattling gets so loud we have to open and close the drawer to get it to stop the fan for a minute. Thanks for any advice on how you fixed your drawer.

Hello! The metal on the bottom is cheap and when hot concave(pops down) which is why when u open drawer it rubs and may pop up or with oven mitt you can push up. I had many technicians mess with it and actually add things that messed up the drawer in other ways. They finally gave me a new one but of course it does the same thing cause it this whole model line. Let me know if you figure anything else out. But be careful of the technicians messing with it.

Hi, I'm looking to purchase a Miele 7020 warming drawer. We're short on space in the kitchen we are fitting, but the company we are getting out cabinets from say that we have to use full size oven housing for the drawer meaning space will be wasted as a result. Does anybody know of companies who make appropriate sized housing as thus seems really strange to me. We have the cabinet, just it regards the casing the warming drawer has to into within that. Many thanks for any insight in the matter. Dee. We're in the UK by the way.

Hi Dee. I’m in Australia and have the drawers. Firstly make sure you really need them. I only use it when I have a dinner party. Secondly there is no reason why the company making your kitchen can’t put a drawer underneath your warming oven. Mine did - I also have a small kitchen and can’t do without the space. The only complication would be if they’re not really custom making your kitchen for you, but have fixed sized cabinetry they are using and can’t be bothered to custom make something for you. Tell them to make sure they make a drawer for you and use the space properly or find another kitchen manufacturer. There are plenty of them.

When turned on , all the control lights are on and the fan runs. None of the controls on the panel work and the device only turns off when the power at the wall is turned off.

The drawer suddenly won't close fully. Is there a way to tske it off the gliders to take a look?

MattFrance
MattFrance

I have the same issue and am currently trying to fix the issue. It appears that the “soft close” arm is the problem. Looking through the grill at the back of the open draw with a flashlight you will see a black plastic arm on the base of the unit. The open fork of the arm will be at the rear of the unit. Using a opened out coat hanger hook the black plastic arm and pull it gently forward to the centre of the base. It is a bit tricky but once done the draw will close fully again. I’m not a technician just someone with the same issue and a coat hanger - good luck!

Bingo MattFrance. I had the same happen tonight & your post solved my problem. The 'soft close' arm fork was at the rear of the unit looking through the grill. Coat hander & a little patience & effort...& problem solved. Many thanks as I had have spent $$$ with a Miele tech for a simple but hard to identify problem.

Brilliant - thank you. I undid the screws on the sides of the rails and moved the drawer up off the rails a bit then back to the left, leaving enough space to get my hand down the right hand side. Was able to reach the fork easily and pull it back into position.

Moved the forked part forward until it touched the D-shaped elevation in the bottom of the case. The drawer closes completely, but the soft close mechanism doesn’t work. Wondering if the fork should cover the “D”, or maybe should be on the right side of the “D”. Scared to use more force to try these positions. Advise?

Great tip, thanks. I had to undo the four (TX) screws at the front to move the drawer a little bit, enough to do the coat hanger trick. I placed the arm over the little black nob on the base plate, perhaps I should have left it leaning against it (behind the nob) as shown on the installation manual. Either way, the drawer now closes but without the soft close.

We got this drawer 10 years ago as the combi-oven above wasn't the same size as the regular one next to it (since replaced by a Bosch). Expensive little accessory when you think about it, most of the time there's enough residual heat in the oven to do any plate warming. I don't think I'll ever buy Miele appliances, just not worth the money and poor/expensive parts / service.

Hi, could you give me a little detail of how you did this please? I have the same problem but don’t know where to jiggle the coat hanger!

John H
John H

If you are able to slide the unit out of the cabinet and unplug it, it is even easier to fix. Place the unit on a worktop. Un-do the screws that fix the top and back panel which is one piece. Gently lever or wiggle with a knife the metal lugs you can see in two horizontal slots at the top corners at the rear. this is the inner top panel locators. Lift off the panel or tip forwards, pivoting at the front of the unit. Push the warming drawer forward no more than 100mm ( don't go too far and the weight of the front panel may tip the whole unit over) and swing the forked arm on the bottom of the casing to engage with the post on the underside of the drawer. Job done. And if like me you have had innumerable problems with Miele products and diabolical customer service just say to yourself as you put it all back in place "never, ever again buy Miele".

Hi - just tried this successfully myself. I would suggest doing it at night to minimise extraneous light, making it easier to see what you are doing. Slide the drawer open. Look through the grille at the back of the drawer while aiming your cellphone light through the grille a bit further along. You will see a hinged black plastic fork, attached to a little piston thingy, on the right side of the base of the unit. When I looked, the fork was turned with the times pointing backwards. I just left my cellphone resting there on a bit of card on top of the shelf and the light aiming through the grille. I made a loose loop in the end of an unwound wire coat hanger, slid it through the grille and then while looking through the grille, I passed the loop around the far time of the fork and then just gently pulled it forwards. As the fork rotates, the piston compresses and then extends again, holding the fork in the reversed position with the tines facing forwards. Like the others, the soft-close still doesn’t work - I presume I’d need to take the whole unit out and dismantle it to find out why - but at least the drawer heats up now, which is all I need. Good luck!

Thanks Mattfrance, that was a 3 year, 3 minute problem. I am so chuffed. The fix took less that a minute in fact. Gaffered the iPhone torch to the grill. The black plastic V is screwed in at the end nearest the side of the oven. There is a slot in the other end that you can hook and pull back to straighten the two pieces.

PS. We never used the plate warmer ( better using the microwave or quooker tap) so I would suggest thinking carefully before getting one.

I would like to add my help to this as I also had this problem and found that it was easier for me to slide the coat hanger through under the drawer itself (between the drawer and the enclosure) to get to the black fork at the back.

How do you remove the sliding drawer to clean below

Geoffers
Geoffers

In July 2021 we found our ESW 5080-29 Warming Drawer would no longer close. I was referred by Miele to a repairer who replaced the hydraulic strut for $351 of which $288 was for the new strut sourced directly from Miele. I found the cost of the exact same 5156VZ strut from Stabilus Aust was $81. I complained to Miele who refunded $179. I recently had another drawer closing issue which also appeared to be a strut failure. I ordered another strut online from Stabilus at $98. Removing the Warming Drawer is easy. Unscrew the two screws (one on each side) which attach the unit to the wall. Slide the whole unit towards you until you can unplug its power cord (LHS at rear) then remove the unit to your work area. (WARNING: It is quite heavy and can topple and crash because it over-balances with a fully open drawer). Note that from here on you need a T20 star-bit to undo the screws. The top and rear of the unit is protected by a one-piece steel cover panel. Undo those screws, three each side and three low down at the back (9 screws) and this cover panel is easily removed, exposing all the gizzards of the warming drawer. I found a layer of fat covering the floor of the unit (under the drawer) which needed cleaning. I then undid two more identical screws and removed the electrical socket at the left rear. Low down on each side of the drawer, near the front, is a small rubber plug which hides a screw attaching the drawer to its slide rails. Remove these two screws allowing the drawer to be completely removed from the unit. Just ease the power cable out of its U-shaped guide on the left side and carefully slide out the drawer. I used a scraper then hot water and detergent to remove all the fat. I then found the hydraulic strut was working fine but the small peg under the centre rear of the drawer had broken from rough use or ignorance. This peg engages the strut-operated fork to pull the drawer fully closed when the drawer is pushed shut. Careful use of a longer screw and Selleys Araldite fixed that little sucker. Then just reverse the dismantling process to put the whole unit back together. The purchase of the new $98 strut was un-necessary, but I’ll probably save it for the future.

How to remove the warming drawer on my ESW 5080-29 Miele

Miele
Miele   DM

Hi there, to uninstall the warming drawer from its niche there are 2 screws located on the side uprights as shown in the operators manual >> installing the appliance section. It is not possible for you to remove the actual warming drawer from the unit, a Miele service technician is required due to the risk of damage or electric shock. Kind regards, Anna.
