Does anyone know if the Polishing Compound should be soft or very firm, almost hard? I can't get it to stick to the job or the polishing wheels.

I think we may have the same problem, maybe. I think the Ozito compound is way too hard to use. If I can get any on a disk, it just flies off across the room when I start the tool. There are various compounds you can get from a hardware store or, like me, use compound for cars I had left over in my shed. They are much more workable and I have two grades; cut or polish. I also use 'Jif' for different jobs.

All the best!

What is the metal extension piece for?

I'm not sure what you're referring to as you may have the same tool but in a different set? Can you identify the piece better, unless you mean the tool to hang it on?
