Discontinued is what this product deserves – I am not surprised to see this product discontinued. We have had the 50x shredder for a couple of years now for home office use (pretty light duties, used maybe 6-8 times pa) and it does not perform - paper rollers fail to consistently catch and fold paper, so the '50x stack' promise is useless - rollers / shredder get out of alignment,… Read more
effectively crumpling the paper during the feed, so even hand feeding is tedious - The 6/40 min duty cycle only makes this worse when you have to hand feed. - THERE IS NO SERVICE SUPPORT that I can find in this country. - worse than useless, it now costs time rather than save it. - on reflection, 2/5 stars is too generous.
Works as expected – Working from home I have to print and dispose of long documents. I saw a number of issues with reviews but I've never had any issues with the paper auto-feeding. I use reflex paper. Yes, it can take some time to shred as it has a relatively short run time, but it just starts again when it is ready and gets through it. I empty the shredding… Read more
into the FOGO bin probably almost every day (I shred that much). Been using it for a year and no issues with this approach.
best ever – Officeworks online out of stock, so many machines online to choose from, However this Rexel stack and Shred Clearance from the warehouse was $50, price online $220. Had to wait till the last 4 Rexel machines came into Officeworks. pleased I did. phoned the day they came in and I had one put on hold picked up next day. The staff member was so… Read more
helpful even offered to carry to my car. But I managed and thanked them. I have just used the machine, loaded up 50 A4 sheets and in less than 5minutes all done. Have plenty more to do. I have statements and documents as far back as 2010.
Time wasted – Very fussy about quality of paper it will auto feed. Might be designed to take ONLY Rexel paper but I have a tub of paper to shred and already it has refused at least half of correspondence. Heat light comes on within a minute or two. Back it goes!
Folding paper helps to auto feed – All the comments here are very valid. The design of this machine is crappy. It's taken me over an hour to shred 50 pages !!! However, if you DO need to keep the thing, Mike's suggestion of folding all the pages in half and placing them in the tray fold down actually works pretty well as far as the auto-feed mechanism is concerned. Thanks Mike! … Read more
Overheating is still a huge issue. Thankfully they've discontinued it. I'm returning it to Officeworks (shame on them for selling such a dodgy product) ASAP.
Rexel 50x auto shredder – Officeworks were 20 percent dearer. But I requested a price match and they did to their credit which was good and then I got home and it didn’t work not at all a light came on and that was the extent of its operation I should’ve read the reports which gave it to out of five big mistake should’ve been one out of five actually should’ve been zero… Read more · 1
because it actually didn’t work at all. So now take it all the way back and get it exchanged maybe for a better brand Since then Unbelievably it’s still going October 2023
Should have read a review! – I bought this machine[ from Officeworks] because it had an automatic 60page auto feed & dealt with staples - BUT it doesn't do both! I have resorted to hand feeding it small meals.....it does overheat, but this is less of a problem since the jams cause enough of a rest time for it to recover. Next time, if there is one, I will make sure to read the reviews first! Show details
Overheating problems – Purchased this from Officeworks yesterday. It is advertised as running for 6 mins before a cool down period of 40 mins. I cannot get it to shred any more than 5 sheets of paper before it overheats - this definitley does not take 6 minutes. This is not satisfactory. I will be returning it to the place of purchase. The only good thing about this machine is that it is relatively quiet in operation and the shredding is great. Show details
Auto shredder overheats to work 5 minutes, cool for 40 and the 'auto' stopped working after 1 day – Yesterday I spent $350 on this relatively highly-specified (for home office use) shredder. After 5 minutes of working, it needed 40 minutes of cooling before doing another 5 minutes of shredding. I spent 3 hours hacking it apart and installed a $2 computer case fan and ducting and the cool-down period is now less than 1 minute of cooling per 5… Read more
minutes of working. Why didn't they include that in the original design? The auto feeder was great for 10 minutes but it usually doesn't pick-up paper any more so it basically doesn't work either. At least with the hacked cooling I can manually rip through things 5-pages-at-a-time pretty fast now.
Not ideal – Thanks MIKE for the tip to fold paper - found this worked otherwise it was going back to Officeworks. Still over heats and I wouldn't recommend as does fill up quickly. Should have read reviews first !!!
Over heating – Only bought this today it only shedders a small hand full before it over heats & stops all the time, it’s going take all day think I’ll take it back by tomorrow Show details
Handy tip for those that have a problem with bulk shredding – I too had given up on using the bulk feeder in this machine, it never picked up the paper. Until I decided to just fold the ream in half and then lay it fold down in the bulk loader forcing the paper to be in contact with the rollers all the time. Since then I just load and walk away, sure it over heats but as others have said just walk away and… Read more
come back when finished as it restarts itself. Now the issue is the bin gets full before the bulk has been completely shredded so I still have to go back every now and then to empty it. I don't usually comment of these things but I too was ready to give up on this machine until I found doing above worked for me.
Fails to draw paper into cutters – This is my second machine. I took the first one back to Office Works and exchanged it under warranty because, after only a few months of working ok, it started failing to pull the paper from the sheet feeder into the cutters. No, it wasn't overloaded. I tried various quantities of paper and even loose (unstapled) sheets failed. It would just sit… Read more
there spinning its rollers but not gripping any paper until it overheated, had a little nanna nap and repeated the futile process. Sadly, its replacement is exactly the same.

Good idea but does not work well – Great idea to have an autofeed but sadly too unreliable. Autofeed does not pick up paper. Very prone to overheating after a very short period of time. Had to return product not working well at all.
Should have read the reviews – What a hopeless product, for years I have struggled with a $50 shredder, decided to pay out some money for something decent. What a disappointment auto feed rarely works, and the thing overheats in minutes.... All the reviews say the same, so why didn't I listen. They should remove this product from the market, it just does not work.
Overheats too often – I purchased a Rexel Shredder Model 80x and wanted to provide some feedback. Overall I'm satisfied with the exception of the overheating problem and autofeed mechanism. Overheating - before finishing 80 sheets the unit overheats and if you have to do several batches of shredding the problem becomes progressively worse as the unit never returns… Read more
to its original temperature to the point (within 3 batches of 80 sheets) that the unit stops again to cool down after 5 sheets. In reality, its not actually an 80 sheet unit. The motor is fully enclosed in plastic with no ventilation and also needs a computer like fan installed to keep the motor cool and therefore, prolong its useable period.
Auto feed - as auto feeders go (e.g. printers and copiers) its not bad however about every 10 sheets it does not grab the paper meaning you have to either open the unit and shuffle and re-sent all the paper or, I have found added pressure applied through the manual feed slot (using a butter knife) does the trick. Obviously failing at approx 10 sheets is not really that great as its meant to be an 80 sheet feeder. What this unit needs is either a stronger spring loaded pressure mechanism in the lid or an improvement in the feeder rollers, or both
Id be more than happy to pay another 10% for the product for these improvements because without them the unit is really only worth 50-75% of what I paid for it
Poor excuse for a shredder! – I bought this shredder in November 2016 as my trusty no brand shredder had been jammed so badly by my partner that of course, it did not work anymore, we couldn't "unjam" it and it wasn't worth repairing. The thought of a shredder that feeds itself and shreds automatically appealed to me so I bought this Rexel 50X automatic shredder. Having worked… Read more
in offices all my life, I also thought Rexel was a good brand. Well I'm afraid this shredder was and is a complete letdown!
Not only does it not shred "automatically" very often, but it gives itself "rest breaks" more than it shreds. Rexel claims you can load up to 50 pages in the document feeder and it will just go and shred them automatically. My experience is more often than not it won't automatically feed documents. I find myself pushing the documents into the wheeled slot that is supposed to pull each document in as more often than not it won't pull the documents in.
Most of the time I have to sit their manually feed each document in one by one as that is the only way it will shred and even then, once it has shredded for a few minutes, the red light comes on and it needs to "cool down" for the next ten minutes before it will shred again.
The other thing I find with it is that the shredded paper drawer which sits at floor level below the shredder fills up in a pile directly under the shredding slot and then it stops and won't continue until you open the drawer, spread the shredder paper out and close the drawer again. When it comes time to empty the shredded paper drawer, one will often find shredded paper all over the floor underneath the drawer so one then has to get the vacuum cleaner out to clean up the mess left behind. I never had any of these issues with my trusty old no brand shredder.
About the only thing this shredder does efficiently is shred plastic cards. For the rest it is useless frankly. You spend more time fiddling around with it and waiting on it to "cool down" than you actually spend shredding.
I was so annoyed with this shredder that I complained to the manufacturer, Acco Brands Australia. I wrote them an email detailing why I was so unhappy with this product. I got an email reply telling me someone would be in touch with me shortly. Two weeks later, had heard nothing from nobody. Sent them another email which got a prompt response saying take the product back to the retailer. I'm sure they're going to be thrilled that I will be returning a product 12 months after purchase. I have persevered with this shredder for a year and I just can't get it to work as it is supposedly designed to do.
A waste of $159 frankly but as it appears to be a discontinued product (not surprisingly), don't buy one. I noticed the other day Aldi had exactly the same shredder for sale although I don't know that it was actually the Rexel brand but it is identical in appearance. Sorry Aldi but don't buy it as you will probably find the same kind of issues.
Overheats and bulk shredder doesn't work – The 5 page manual feed works ok but the shredder continually over heats. You then have to wait for it to cool down in order to continue shredding. We can't shread 1 wastebin full of paper before it overheats. The bulk shredder is supposed to take up to 50 pages at a time, only it also does not work, presumably because the rollers get a bit of… Read more
paper dust and can't grip the pages to suck them through. The manuals states to wipe the rollers down but this doesn't help.
Overall, it shreds minimal numbers of pages but for what we paid I'm disappointed with the performance. Just buy a cheaper model that only shreds 5 pages at a time.
Don't Bother – This shredder should have been OK, but you will be disappointed. The auto stack thing doesn't work and it over heats too fast. Don't bother with this one. Buy a Fellowes instead.
OK if not for it overheating! – Works ok. Just overheats after a few minutes at first, then more quickly each time it cools enough to start working again. End result - a very frustrating device. Only way to work it is to shred regularly rather than save up a heap of shredding & do it in a block.
Great for automatic stacked A4 shredding – I bought one of these shredders after reading 'It's an OK shredder' review. The machine works perfectly for stacked A4 piles of paper for a home office. Yes, it can take a long time and the overheat light comes on fairly frequently but if you just want to get rid of a large pile of paper while you are pottering in the house it is perfect. And it… Read more
is very quiet. I have motored through almost a 12 inch pile of papers since buying it yesterday and it hasn't missed a beat. The time consuming part is feeding the smaller pieces of paper into the machine manually - this is much slower than my old shredder. But it's a price I am happy to pay for the ease of automatic shredding of the A4 papers.
Lots of cool features that don't quite deliver – I've had this shredder for just over a year now. The reason I picked this model was because of a few things: Rexel brand is generally good, the auto feed and a decent size collection tray. It also shreds credit cards and staples (so you don't have to unstaple the pages - just shred them). I didn't think the 6 min on/40 min off rule would be too… Read more
much of a hindrance - but that it is.
Lets start off with the cool features and then I'll explain the reality.
1. Auto Shreds 50x pages
2. Large collection tray with see through window to see how full it is
3. Does credit cards, staples and paperclips
4. Shred and cross cut
Here's the reality.
1. Auto feed 50x pages - yes it might however, these pages have to be de-stapled otherwise the pages will jam (sort of defeats the purpose of being able to shred staples??) as it only does singles pretty much (it bends a sheet in half and then shreds - so it's 2 pages when it goes through). Then the unit's motor continues, shreds nothing, over heats and you wait the next 10-15 min for it to cool down (oh and it's only a4's - it won't pick up receipt stubs - that's a manual job). The 6 min on/ 40 minute cool down roughly related to about 15-20 pages and then the unit will cool down for 10-15 minutes. In real terms - if you have 500 sheets (standard ream of paper - not much huh?) this equates to around 6.25hrs (reality 8hrs plus). If the auto feed worked correctly you could just leave it, but it's actually quicker to feed it once it cools down (it only stays on for about 60 sec). So I generally do this on a day I'm doing reports in-between.
2. Large collection bin - for the size unit (and compared to others) it does have a large tray. However you have to manually pull the paper in it forward or again the unit will jam up. Worse, when you do pull the tray the jammed paper falls creating a mess where the tray was. Wouldn't be so much of a problem except the bottom has small indented circles (yeah I get it's for the plastic strength, but why not put that on the underside and just make it flat with a catch at the back to stop the drawer coming out)??
3. Does credit cards and staples - yes it does and fairly well I might add (in between the heating up in 60 sec). However as stated before, it will shred staples - just not in the auto feeder very well.
4. Shred and Crosscut - the unit does a good job with this feature if you want the extra security of cross cut.
So the pro's I've outlines at the top and the Con's explained them in the last lot.
A few other Cons:
- Fairly large and heavy unit (even including that it has a large tray, it's still pretty heavy
- Only has a short cord (under 1m) - couldn't have given us an extra 50cm? Why not just put a fig 8 socket on it and change to a large cord if you wanted to? Better yet - give us 50cm you cheap b******** At any rate, you'll have to use it beside a power outlet or run it with an extension lead like I do.
Would I recommend it? Probably not. For the simple fact the auto feed is garbage and that's the only reason you pay the extra for this unit. For the size, it's basically useless as a bulk shredder (even with a big bin because of the overheating). If you're going to stand there and feed, you might as well get a shredder for half the price. Yeah the extra space in the container is good (again if you didn't have to keep moving the paper forward). I'll keep it until it dies - as it does the job (although slowly) and it was a tax write off. However next unit, I'll definitely be looking into others reviews before hand and not relying on brand name and features alone. It's a good thing they've discontinued these however (at time of writing) Officeworks are still flogging them off.

Waste of time and money – This shredder is absoluely usesless. My 5 year old cold do a better job in a dark room wing nail scissors blindfolded. Jams up with only a few sheets of paper and overheats
Possibly the worst device ever invented – Don't be fooled by these auto-feed shredders. These are over-heating, jamming up pieces of absolute rubbish. I bought it a while ago and got frustrated with it and put it away. I had built up more shredding and will find my docket and see if I can return it to Officeworks tomorrow. Worse than terrible but they don't have a rating for that. Arrrgh!
Looked good on purchase – Have a buildup of shredding due to my no name shredder finally dying after years of great shredding. This rexel looked great with 50 sheets on auto feed, 6min of runtime, and able to load 5 sheets manully happydays. However the auto feed does not work, the manual feed jammed on 3 sheets, overheats in 3-4 minutes, a complete waste of my time, will be returning it in the morning.
Unreliable shredder that overheats in seconds, not minutes – We bought this shredder because we occasionally shred confidential papers at work. Well, even a small batch of 100 pages took 4 hours because the shredder would overheat in seconds. I don't recommend this product, or any of its successors from Rexel.
Auto shredding function never works – I see that this product has been discontinued, presumably because other users have encountered the same issue that I have - the automatic shredding function fails to shred even unfolded, perfectly flat sheets. it's expensive for what it actually is - a manually-fed shredder.
This is an ok shredder – I've got the Rexel Auto +50, not sure of the model number. Contrary to the negatives below, This is actually an ok machine. The problems reported with the auto feed spinning and not pulling the paper and it just stopping and refusing to operate all happened but; the auto feed spinning without pulling in the paper has to do with putting in a doc… Read more
that's either folded or stapled. It won't accept anything except single unattached A4 paper. Doesn't like envelopes, A3 folded to A4, heavy gauge paper etc. The thing about stopping and not moving for either auto feed or single feed is either overheating (red light) or the bin's full. The bin fills pretty quickly, and it fills from the back (not a big insight, just fyi) so you open it, drag all the bits forward, empty and carry on. I'm dealing with the residue of my dear departed mother-in-law's affairs, it's a lot of stuff and I really need an industrial size shredder. The +50 isn't, so really, can't in fairness complain that it can't work like one. Just saying
Frustrating – I purchased this machine from Officeworks My decision was based on that the machine had a 80 sheet capacity input tray, it could shred staples, small paper clips and credit cards. I paid $199.00 I was also impressed that the instructions on the packaging advised that it can automatically do this on its own. Excited when I first tried it? No! It… Read more
overhead just after 2 sheets of paper. It would shut its sell off and not work again. Tried a few times then I just returned it and got my money back.
awesome handsfree – I have been madly shredding away on the Rexel Auto 80 and absolutely what a wonderful machine, hands free is most awesome, looks after itself, when it heats it rests when it cools down it continues on. What a great time saving design. Nice and quite too.
Mostly automatic. Requires supervision – It's a lot quieter than my previous shredder, but the cross-cuts, while good are about twice as long. I like that you can put up to 80 sheets in the top and it'll alternately shred and cool down until they're done, in about a 2 on/8 off cycle. If some sheets are a bit thick, or are too thin, every now and again the grabber will fail to feed… Read more
the page in, and it just spins forever until you press on the lid for more grip, whence it manages to grab that page, and continues for another while. You need to keep an ear on it, but it's quiet enough that you can hear the TV.
Everything else is automatic. The 80-page version has a fairly effective anti-jam operation (it'll back-and-forth about four times before it gives up), and a 'bin full' detector that works well. Also, auto-off, and auto-cooldown.
Emptying a full bin is a touch messy. Keep the hand-vacuum handy. It comes with a bin-bag (just seal and trash it), but Officeworks doesn't seem to sell replacements. Quiet. Mostly automatic. Some sheets don't get grabbed until you press down on the lid. "Home" rather than "Office" duty cycle.
