18v batteries - genuine Ryobi vs generic – JAN2025 purchased generic Ryobi compatible 18v 8Ah batteries. Can’t beat the price and delivery very quick from Temu. Hope they perform well enough. Edit FEB2025 - used in 2x18v lawnmower to compare. Outlasted my 2022 generic 5Ah battery by estimated 2Ah, but lasted 5minutes less than my 2014 genuine 4Ah battery. All batteries were fully charged… Read more
and run until mower stopped on its own. You decide, I think they are still worth it, but consider the generic batteries capacity are actually about half what is displayed. In other words, compare a generic 8Ah with a genuine 4Ah when deciding which is better for your circumstances. Given the current price of a genuine 4Ah is around $150 and the generic 8Ah is around $30-$40, only time will tell, but the genuine would need to last 3 to 4 times longer in lifespan to be better value in my opinion. Can’t fault any of my genuine Ryobi batteries which all still work well, the oldest is a 2014 1.5Ah. Tip - only store them with 2 or 3 bars of charge to maximise their longevity, charging just before use if needed for a bigger job. Storing them at 1 bar or 4 bars will reduce their lifespan. They are becoming increasingly expensive though making generics attractive. Also, the 2022 generic would not fit properly in the tools so I had to file down the plastic to get it to fit, but all the newer generics fit perfectly. On a side note - the Ryobi HP batteries have 2 extra connector points on the rear of the protruding section at the base, they are supposed to sense high current demand and deliver higher current (thus power) to the motor in the brushless range, but interestingly enough, my mower doesn’t have the corresponding receiving contacts, so maybe not all brushless range tools would benefit.
10 years old and still going strong – I just noticed that my Ryobi drill's battery is 10 years old and still going strong. I don't use it for trade work however just thought I would let people know they still work well even after 10 years of around the yard use. Charges like normal and doesn't overheat - I guess I got lucky as they aren't supposed to last this long lol Show details
Aussie Batteries Lithion Ion battery won't accept a charge! – I acknowledge that the batteries provided by Aussie batteries were 8.0Ah in lieu of the 6.0Ah ones ordered, however, I would have been satisfied with what I ordered, given that one of the batteries provided will not accept a charge and is therefore useless. The generic batteries do not fit in my tools as well as the standard ones provided by Ryobi. Show details
GIVING RYOBI BATTERY & CHARGERS A WIDE BERTH – No wonder this is discontinued and I will not buy Ryobi again. I paid over $200 for the whipper snipper and battery / charger. Less than 18 mths and very minimal use the battery charged but would not start the power tool being my whipper snipper. There is a 3 year warranty on this product. I did try it in another whipper snipper owned by… Read more
another and same no power. It has left a very sour taste regarding purchasing anymore ryobi product.s The receipt well the ink faded off the paper so hence no good. I know next time to photograph these receipts on this paper. I went onto google and this is a common problem for the batteries to just die. If I were a motor mechanic I could probably fix it according to utube but Im not lol
Not Ryobi and no response – Received generic batteries which were shown as Ryobi in the picture. Have contacted Aussie Battery 3 times to resolve/return but heard nothing. Very poor service. Show details
Scam dont buy from here – This is a scam. Received incorrect items bought ryobi compatible 6amps received 7amps. And the batteries dont work, literally shut off after a few minutes, not sure if its overheating as its cold to touch.. dont waste your money on the knock off rubbish!
Lithium battèries are a scam – Starts of briiliant, long life for use but of course over a bit of time the cells start dying. Had mine 2.5 years, paid a lot and now it just starts dying after about 20 mins of work. Would have cost me half as much in fuel for the same amount of work over that time. Of course the battery pack is sealed, so no replacing dud cells. One has to think… Read more
what option is more eco friendly, CO2 or all the wastage from lithium batteries. The lithium battery tech has conned us all, just like those over priced led bulbs that you endlessly have to replace that last 1/10th of the time they claim to last. We have been duped people.
Six Tools-Zero Batteries – Hook Line and Sinker: After acquiring many Ryobi tools over the years, i'm disappointed that they would not accept the return of three batteries. Hoping to exchanging the batteries for ones that are working. I'm within the three years warranty peroid. Each battery has a date when it was made printed on it, mine are clearly within the three years.… Read more
But without a receipt they're not happy to accept the return. I want to use the tools that i have but i don't have a battery, I couldn't bring myself to buy a battery on that day, out of principle.
Bunnings Confusion: I even took my credit card statement with the dates and the total for each purchase over the last two years to reprint the receipts but the manager wasn't able to assist me. I was left confused whether he was actually trying to help or not. After i asked to speak to the Manager directly instead of through the person behind the desk it became apparent that for the first 5 dates that i gave him when purchases were made resulted in no receipts.
Managers Discretion: There is a policy that allows you to return faulty purchases without a receipt but it wasn't possible for me because the purchase price of what i was trying to replace was over $100. Bunnings were not going proceed without the receipt. It is possible to do this by them recording my ID eg. drivers licence. Technically it's two batteries so it's around about the $100 per battery really.
Recommendation: There is nothing wrong with plugging in your tools, don't go for the battery option. You can get a Ryobi tool but also extending to other brands as well. Support up and coming newer businesses to ensure competition is fair.
Zero Hour: Roybi batteries lasted a decent amount of time before and you felt you got your moneys worth. I've had a battery that lasted from 2016 to 2023. From 2020 onwards cheaper batteries are used which didn't even last three years to cover the warranty period. The batteries are a few dollars were cheap to make before, but even cheaper now but the prices have gone up excessively and quality down.

Whithin Roybi Batteries are smaller batteries like this one https://eu.nkon.nl/tenpower-icr18650-2000mah-30a-refurbished.html
Not Charging – Purchased 2 pack 4ah about a year ago from Home Depot. One battery quit charging and the other one doesn't last about 10 minutes using the blower. Not recommended to anyone who are using Ryobi portable tools. Show details
Great but… – Love my mower, but I can imagine many women having difficulty spanning the battery width for easy removal from both the charger, and in my case the mower… cheers Juls
Battery Flat and would not charge – Ryobi 18v 4.0ah with a manufacturing year 2020. The battery runs flat and was only adviced that I should not let the battery completely flat as this would result the charger not to work. I don't understand what kind of charger Ryobi is manufacturing. And if the battery is faulty why don't they replace me with a new battery despite of me having not… Read more
receipt at all. The battery is clearly a Ryobi battery whether I have a receipt or not the battery is manufactured by Ryobi. Ryobi should be responsible to their own product despite no receipt presented. I understand for Bunnings not accepting to replace if there is no receipt but for Ryobi not accepting if there is no receipt is like disowning there own product.
Terrible product – Battery charge speed is pathetic, it takes about 3-4 hours to charge a single 4 AH battery , this alone warrants a 1/5 rating if i could give it less i would
Reliable and long lasting – I have a number of Ryobi 18v batteries and they all work very well. Long use time and very reliable. Some are over 6 years old and are still going well.

Terrible – Charge doesn’t last long. Terribly inefficient and very frustrating as I cannot make it through one trim on a very modest front yard. And it’s been fully charged too. Ugh!
Battery Melted! – I have used Ryobi tools for a few years, and until now been very happy with them. However, after using my Ryobi brushless angle grinder, I discovered that the 4Ah battery I was using was melting! The plastic around the positive terminal was blackened and soft. I have contacted Ryobi a number of times through their website and heard absolutely… Read more
nothing back. I asked them what I should do, and if it was still safe to use the battery. It is out of warranty of course, but especially with an issue of melting and the potential for a fire, I would have thought they would at least get back to me to find out more. I have since done a bit of searching, and discovered this is a common occurrence with Ryobi batteries - particularly when being used with angle grinders! Shame, I liked my Ryobi tools - but with this kind of support, I won't be buying any more of them.
18v 5ah batteries – Stopped working under 3 years but Ryobi will not replace, paid cash but lost receipt. You can only buy these at Bunnings and the manufacture date is clear. Sole supplier and a manufacturing date should be OK, Nah read the T&C. I have over 15 Ryobi workshop and garden tools and this is how they treat customers, Bunnings are no better. Show details
Top product for the diy'r – Have owned numerous garden & workshop items for over 5 years and still adding when I can afford too. Every item has been A1 to use and batteries also well up to to it. Replaced the garden blower after 3 years of hard daily use and thrown one 1.5ah battery to date. Still using my original 2.5ah, 4 & 5ah batteries. Show details
Ryobi One + Angle Grinder - First Use less than 5 minutes – Purchase a Ryobi 18V 4-1/2 in. Angle Grinder and the compatible 18V Lithium 18V 2Ah battery pack/charger in June 2020. First use was to cut out the drain from the old [fiberglass] bathtub that was removed during a remodel (thinking the old brass piping might be worth saving). This unit ran out of energy withing 5 minutes - i had to… Read more
forcibly/manually rip the last 1/4in from the tub. Taking this unit back to HD tomorrow for a refund. Maybe I shouldn't use a cordless tool for a high torque/rpm job - but the concept of cordless, multi-purpose tools is just too promising... btw - have had a cordless Black and Decker drill for the last 10 years, light work only. That thing still holds a charge for months, not a lot of torque but simple quick projects - it's amazing compared to this experience.
Batteries are crap! – Have had the line trimmer and blower for about 8 months. I love that they are lightweight but they are no good if you can't charge the battery. Worked one day, dead the next and unable to charge it as the charger tells me its defective or fully charged. Very disappointed with this product. Show details
Crap product. ZERO STARS – Bought a fast charger for their one plus range 2-3 years ago. Charger has stopped working after minimal use in that time. Considering this is power tool product had expected the product to be more robust however completely dissatisfied with how long it has lasted. MY EXPERIENCE IS POSITIVE - I'M DELIGHTED!!! – Hi there, Gardening Folks and Hobbyists, I'm surprised to see negative Reviews on this Item. I have a 2.5AH for my Hedge Trimmer - purchased a few years ago - a 4.0AH and 5.0AH this year. They go and go! Could not be more pleased with them. applies to Most Batteries by Most Companies you will find. And Do be Careful Not to Leave them in Equipment Outside ie with hot temperatures - I always keep mine indoors and they serve me well. Ryobi 18V One+ 1.5Ah Li-Ion battery (Y2016) – Bought the Battery in early 2018. Part of a Ryobi One + cordless drill pack. The drill is great. The battery marked Y2016, would have only been used say 12-15 times, recharged maybe 4-5 times. I used it again recently and it worked for a few minutes then just died. OK, though it needs to sit in the charger, but no, its completely dead, and… Read more
the Ryobi One+ Charging cradle lights up also saying, the battery fails to charge.
So a rather expensive battery lasted for 12-15 uses, and about 4-5 recharges and then, ...disposable.
I am so hoping the 2016 year was a bad batch year. Else Ryobi One+ has a mounting consumer backlash problem. The "skin" devices are great, the battery, well that quality can kill the good work accomplished in the design and manufacture of the "Skins".

Battery died – Bought 3 years ago, used less then a dozen times for a torch/garden trimmer. Now battery doesnt even charge and Ryobi wont replace it under warranty, because i didnt “register” the battery, even though i have proof of where and when the item was purchased. Dont waste your time and money. Show details
Partner to the Roybi Line Trimmer – It came in a package deal with the Ryobi Line Trimmer I purchased and have been very happy with the results so far. I recharge it after using but will not leave it to charge overnight. Once charged I put it away till I want to use it again usually weekly and does the job of trimming on the one charge. It does take at least 2 hours to recharge from flat to fully charged.
Just out of warranty and battery dies – Disappointing that just after the warranty expired this battery and it's charger died. Reported to Ryobi with no success. I have been adding accessories to this this One+ system for a while now because I thought I could trust this brand. I noticed that whilst researching on this site that they have discontinued these batteries and it's charger.
Don't Leave these turned on – Just had my shed burn down because of one of these...how do I know...because it was the only thing turned on in the shed and charging overnight as I have done for three years since I bought it. Not just a Ryobi issue either. Do yourselves a favour...don't leave anything Lithium turned on overnight or when you are not there.
More specs reqd of battery – The C- rating of the batteries should be given in order to calculate the max continuous discharge amperage. Please supply this to help prevent accidental overloading and overheating. Thank you, Johan Sundermeijer
Didn't last the distance – This Ryobi battery charger Model # BCL 14181H Lithium Ion dual chemistry failed with one month left on the warranty period. It smelt like it was about to catch fire. Indications from Bunnings and other posters, indicate was that this particular model has failure issues. Bunnings replaced the faulty charger with another from the shelf. No… Read more
extra warranty time on the new charger, so hopefully it'll last until I get value for the money I paid up front.
Ryobi offered this response to my query: The item was somewhat protected from catching fire because of the fire retardant properties of the plastic material from which it is made. Return to place of purchase for a replacement under warranty!
Somewhat protected?
Because there is no definitive guarantee that these chargers will NOT catch fire, I would advise anyone: NEVER leave these chargers operating without constant supervision.
Ryobi should do the right thing ASAP and remove these chargers from sale.
Overpriced – My battery started to reduce its service life after a couple of years, and I got quite a shock and the price of replacement batteries. I found that Master Instruments do an after market 4a/h battery for the Ryobi one range. Well priced, and they told me they use Panasonic and Sanyo batteries in the pack. The same batteries as Ryobi use.
Keep your receipt! – *** UPDATE *** I was able to go to bunnings and get a replacement Charger. The problem was not the Batteries the problem was the 2014 chargers had a fault. The service-person at Bunnings said they should have done a product recall on them but they did not because the problem was not in all of them. They replaced my Charger on the spot with no… Read more
questions asked and gave me a 2 year warranty on the new one as well. So all good in the end and i have updated my review to reflect this.
*** Original Review ***
The Ryobi One+ system is fantastic and well priced but they have a real problem with the reliability of their batteries. It is not joke when i say keep your Receipt. Within 1 year of my purchase of the 4Ah and the 1.5Ah batteries i have had to return both of them AND the Charger to Bunnings to get them replaced.
I use my batteries regularly (as one should)
I kept them > 30% charge (as one should)
I do not expose them to excessive heat or cold (as one should)
But they still one day decided they did not want to be charged any more and just bricked.
Perfect partner to a One+ tool box – I have a few One+ tools for the workshop, garden and workplace. They are all very handy, however some of them, like the angle grinder and circular was can eat the fully charged smaller batteries in a matter of minutes. The 4.0Ah battery solves this issue by giving a reasonable time to work with the higher drain tools. I thought the LED… Read more
indicator on them was a bit of a gimmick, but have actually found it to be handy to check which batteries need to go back on the charger at the end of a job.
I would recommend one of the big batteries and a second charger to anyone who has a few of these tools. Gives a reasonable work time with the high drain tools They do make some tools a bit heavier
