Loved dealing with Michael at S&B. Competitive pricing on everyday drinkers and also able to source more unique drams. The Ardbeg Supernova single cask was a gem!

Unprofessional, Suspicious Practices, and Terrible Customer Service – I recently had an incredibly disappointing experience with Skull & Barrel, and after careful consideration, I feel compelled to share my concerns with others to prevent them from going through the same frustration and skepticism. It all started when I came across Skull & Barrel online while researching where to purchase a specific whisky. I was… Read more

excited because they seemed to offer a wide variety of whiskies, including some hard-to-find bottles. However, my initial excitement quickly turned into disappointment when I reached out to the company for clarification on the sourcing of their products.

The Customer Service Disaster:

I decided to give Skull & Barrel a call to ask a straightforward question: whether the whiskies they sell are sourced directly from local, authorized distributors or if they were grey imports. I’m an avid whisky collector, and I take great care to ensure that I’m purchasing from reputable sources.

To my surprise, the response I received from the owner (or whoever was on the other end of the phone) was nothing short of rude. Instead of a professional and clear answer to my inquiry, I was met with hostility. When I asked about the origins of the whiskies they sell, the person on the line seemed almost offended by my question, and responded with a dismissive, "Why does it matter? A bottle is a bottle." That, right there, was a major red flag.

I tried to probe further, but instead of offering any reassurance or transparency, the person cut the conversation short, becoming increasingly defensive and condescending. I’m not one to be put off easily, but the tone and attitude were appalling and unprofessional. I have never been treated so rudely when asking a legitimate question about the authenticity of a product.

Suspicion of Grey Imports:

After this negative interaction, I began to grow concerned about the possibility of grey imports being sold by Skull & Barrel. A reputable business should be transparent about the provenance of their products, especially when it comes to high-end goods like whisky. Instead, Skull & Barrel’s refusal to answer simple questions or provide any form of clarity only deepened my suspicion.

Given the dismissive attitude I encountered, I have serious doubts about their inventory. Whisky lovers and collectors know that grey imports are a real concern in the market. These are products that bypass official channels, often resulting in products that have been improperly stored or even worse. When the company refused to give me a straight answer, it made me wonder from where Skull & Barrel might be sourcing their whiskies, potentially putting customers at risk of receiving subpar products.

Questionable Business Practices:

This experience has led me to believe that Skull & Barrel may not only be selling whiskies with questionable provenance but also engaging in questionable business practices. A responsible business should be open about its sourcing methods, and customer inquiries should be treated with respect - not dismissed or met with rude behavior.

What’s more, the lack of professionalism and transparency displayed by the owner raises serious concerns about their overall approach to customer service. If a company can’t handle a simple customer query in a respectful and professional manner, it’s hard to trust them with any future transactions.

Final Verdict:

I cannot recommend Skull & Barrel to anyone who values transparency, professionalism, and authenticity in their purchases. Based on my experience, I believe their customer service is abysmal, and there is a real possibility that they may be dealing in grey imports. If you care about the quality and legitimacy of the products you're buying, I suggest looking elsewhere for your whisky needs. With so many reputable retailers in the market, there’s no reason to risk dealing with a company that treats its customers poorly and is unwilling to provide clear answers about its inventory.

Stay far away from Skull & Barrel. There are much better, more trustworthy options out there.
