 AI reviews summary

The Messaging Company (TMC) has received overwhelmingly negative feedback following the forced migration of email accounts from Australian ISPs like iiNet, TPG, Westnet, and Internode. Users report a severe decline in service quality, characterised by technical instability, aggressive price hikes, and a total lack of effective customer support. Many customers feel "extorted" into paying for a substandard service to avoid losing long-standing email addresses.

Pros
Successful Migration for Some: A small number of users noted that their initial transition from their ISP was completed without losing historical data.
Rare Positive Support Interaction: A single reviewer highlighted a helpful experience with a specific support staff member.
Cons
Critical Technical Failures: Recurring reports of emails disappearing, inbox/sent folders being wiped, and significant delays (up to 24-48 hours) in receiving time-sensitive messages or 2FA codes.
Ineffective Spam Management: The spam filter is frequently described as "rubbish," failing to block obvious phishing attempts (including those impersonating TMC) while incorrectly flagging legitimate bills and personal correspondence as spam.
Inaccessible Customer Support: Users are frustrated by a "useless" AI chatbot named Tim, long wait times on phone lines that often disconnect, and support staff who rely on generic scripts rather than resolving complex technical issues.
Aggressive Pricing and Billing: Significant concern regarding annual price hikes (some reporting increases of over 50%) and instances of unauthorised credit card charges after subscriptions were cancelled.
Verdict

The Messaging Company is currently viewed by its users as an unreliable and overpriced service that fails to deliver basic email functionality. Due to persistent technical bugs and a lack of human support, it is not a viable long-term solution for personal or business communication.

Like many others, I'm not happy having been offloaded to The Messaging Company by iinet. I wouldn't mind the extra cost so much, if I didn't have to regularly email TMC from my gmail account because my webmail isn't working. This is happening more and more often, and it's very frustrating. What's more, after I received a letter (yes, a letter)… Read more

from a friend in Germany telling me that her emails were blocked, I found out that TMC blocks many German email providers, because they are allegedly sending masses of spams. Maybe that's why I don't get a lot of spams, but instead I have to worry about not receiving emails nor being able to send them. I have moved my main contacts in Germany to gmail, but who knows what other emails might get lost in cyber space. I cannot complain about the company's service, as they always respond to my complaints and usually fix most issues. At the moment, the thought of moving 25 years of correspondence elsewhere is still stopping me from closing my account, but I'm bound to do it one day.

Have now officially cancelled both our email addresses which we had with IInet for over 20 years!!!! The Messaging Company has the nerve to increase their cost by some 15% or so, to $90/year for me and still provide the same dreadful service. Goodbye and Good Riddance :(

Unbelievable - this should be illegal in a modern country. I had my @Internode email account "sold" (I presume) by internode (IInet) to "The messaging company" and what started out at $30 per year, 2 years ago, has risen to $47 last year and this years renewal is just shy of $70. This is over 130% increase in two years. Something is wrong here -… Read more

I would even give a negative number of rating stars, because they don't deserve any. I had to use my Google account to sign in, because I cannot receive any emails via The Messaging Company. This is not my usual Login to the Product Review. This company charges me $55.00 per annum for hosting my email address which I have had for 26 years. Their… Read more

mail client is crushing, emails disappearing (actually the most important ones), it is constantly freezing my computer and if you spend an hour to tick all the spam mail and press delete button, you would be wasting your time, because it deletes only one from the top. Your entire 60 minutes for nothing. It also seems that there are all spams and scams allowed and it sometimes takes days to remove it. I keep submitting my complaints and expressing dissatisfaction of their service for past three years and it only seems getting worse. Why the Internet providing companies in Australia were allowed to stop hosting emails of their own domains and passed it to a Chinese companies charging solely for email address, three times as much as it is worth?????? There is no stupidity like that anywhere in the world. I recently experienced again recurring issue with sent folder, and my entire Inbox disappeared. No emails. No receiving new emails, nothing. I sent an important email which would certify a maintaining of correspondence and it apparently got sent, but sent folder doesn't register. Quality of service and applications of The Messaging Company isn't just the poorest, it is outrages. The complaints don't do anything they are meaningless. I have to cancel my subscription with them and go for something like a Gmail, Hotmail, or yahoo. Actually I have never had problem with yahoo mail, but constant meltdown about The Messaging Company. You guys are disgrace to the entire Internet. On photos below, it's shown all emails disapeared and the sent folder only registers some sent emails. It definitely doesn't file a Reply messages.

Full of scam emails, huge price increases, no support. I tried to look at the renewal notice and even that didn't work. A company that won't even let you renew must be in very bad shape.

Changed my subscription to annual for both my Iinet Email Accounts work fine for 2 days and then they suspend my accounts for none payment. Gues what 6 attempts and I finally get and email to a gmail account saying account suspended follow steps and pay again. You (Messaging Co) cost me a contract. Goodbye Westnet, RIP – Absolutely the worst telecommunication in Australia. Been with Westnet since the beginning but since all the changes (Westnet,TPG, iiNet) to the Messaging Company it went all downhill really fast. I don’t know why I am writing this review because… Read more

after readings about 25 other reviews (all bad with 1 star and only ONE satisfied customer??) I knew I wasn’t the only one and that management of TPG, IINet and TMC don’t seem to give a toss either. I'm just another silly customer who was forcibly migrated to TMC from TPG/iiNet and now found out that we have to pay an extra $3.50 per month for their horrible none existing service. I did try to speak to the helpdesk a couple of times but to no avail due to unbelievable long waiting times. Did I mention the number of daily spam I am getting? ..... the quantity is tenfold than before the migration and even with their own spam “TMC email reminders to pay the $3.50 immediately to prevent account issues” (which don't mention your name or customer number and don't look like their standard emails either) All in all to management of TMC, I won’t be paying a cent and by the looks of it, I am not the only one !!!

Follow-up  · Since I left this useless mob and I opted for Telstra it is such a relief to be part of a reliable provider. I should be lying if I did not mention that they too have the odd issue but they are quickly responding via a good helpdesk with a friendly staff and knowledgeable technicians who sort out the problems real fast. Their migration process was… Read more

Spam and shrinkflation – Since iiNet shifted its email to TMC, I've been spammed like never before. But the real issue is going to be cost. Whatever TMC will charge (and it's taking its time to tell us), it won't be free. Worse still, iiNet is unlikely to reduce its monthly charge despite reducing (eliminating) its email service. The ultimate in shrinkflation!

Follow-up  · Not only did TMC charge for the main mailbox, it charges for each alias. Because I had 2 aliases and one main mailbox, my cost tripled. I’ve now changed from TMC to another email provider (being an Apple user, I chose iCloud) and I’m about to leave iiNet for another ISP as iiNet is increasing its prices yet again. iiNet has abandoned its customers - no compensation, just betrayal.

Much Improved Customer Service – Initially very concerned about The Messaging Company because of the overwhelmingly bad reviews on here, I contacted them to ty to sort out a minor glitch with one of my four family accounts. small clarification, I had my issue fully resolved in less than 5 hours. If they were as bad as previously stated, I think they might now be getting their act together and providing pretty good customer service. IINET on the other hand will never get any business from me again.

i just got a renewal from these people for their crappy email service. i have a long standing email address that is critical to keep because so many of my contacts have it, and TMC use this as leverage to charge whatever they want. they engage in extortion. their spam filter is rubbish as it blocks legitimate emails. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY if you can avoid it.

Already reviewed this rubbish company once, but feel compelled to revisit just to express my disgust at having to pay for such an abysmal service. But yet again this morning, after signing up for a new online account on a website, I sat waiting for 30 minutes for a registration verification email - which never comes because TMC only selectively deliver email, and it would seem by carrier pigeon. If it ever does arrive in my Inbox it will likely be tomorrow, only 24 hours after the 10 minutes allowed in the registration process. (And Yes, I did check my Spam folder, because that is generally where legitimate emails go, while the junk mail goes to the Inbox. They can't even get that right). Does anyone from this company monitor these reviews?

I'm off now to give a one star review to iinet/TPG for dropping us in this mess.

Don't even bother using an Email service that has migrated to The Messaging Company as nothing but issues since I moved over - in spite of the fact that I have given it a chance for 18 months now. Migrated an old Westnet address across to TMC (to continue use) as Westnet were getting out of providing Emails and TMC were the nominated provider. … Read more

Apart from being a rather expensive subscription Email service (for what can be signed up to online currently) issues include (but are not limited to): 1: Regular contact Emails coming in are often sent to the Spam folder. 2: Forwarding an Email often brings up a "cannot send" popup and then it dumps it into the drafts folder - with no explanation of why it won't send. 3: Formatting a new Email and sending to a regular contact (trying to at least) brings up the "cannot send" error. 4: Some Emails will not send - even if a specific address is used as the recipient and typed in as a valid address - e.g outlook, gmail and so forth. 5: Spasmodically, attachments on an Email seem to give the TMC system a meltdown (even if legit) - like a PDF file or the like. 6: God forbid that a TMC mail account is used for 2FA (2 factor authentication) identification due to the time it takes TMC to get it through. Not good if there is a 20 minute time-out (as an example) for the 2FA to be used - but no such issues with Outlook or Gmail I have noticed.

For $70 (or free) a year I can get a much better service - without the TMC glitches, frustration and the "hope it works, cross your fingers" scenario.
