Update – Have now been driving the van for about 17 months. I had a fuel injector problem after about 6 months that Toyota Rockingham sorted out under warrantee. It took some time to get it sorted and I was without the van for a couple of weeks which was not so easy. Could use some refinements 2022 – Vehicle has superb handling on corners and in and around bends. Definitely rides and handles smoothly on the road. Certainly a great achievement overall compared to the older series prior to 2019. Far more road grip and less away. illumination for the rear passenger stair well and automatic illumination of an evening in the rear seating section. Another easy fix. No arm rests up front especially for the driver. Toyota could really fix this quite easily. A good option to see would be a more refined dash and display system console that points towards the driver for easier access taking eyes off the road less. No heads up display. Noise coming from rear springs. No plastic moulding underbody for the front or rear wheels making it harder to clean out grime and mud etc. Could use a larger fuel tank. Cheap plastic moulding Interior with dashboard becoming excessively hot. Glove compartment broke within 3 months of purchase. Factory fitted rear parking sensors failed 6 months in. Headlights have intermittent issues where they will stay. Only way to turn them off is to shut down vehicle and manually turn them off. Excessive factory tow ball hitch noise. Provide a factory fitted emergency escape roof hatch which clearly should be factory fitted deep tint to stop your passengers from burning and also would be valuable if they had it so it could actually open so as to remove excess hot air.

Commuter coach service average 600 kms a day meaning refuelling twice daily.

issue happening again. This wasn't picked up at the first service and only now that I have mentioned it. Currently with Toyota for these warranty repairs. Paintwork shocking – Bought the van brand new in feb 2021 . Now have rust coming through under the rubber tailgate seal and bare metal around the drivers door where the rubber meets . Fantastic. The radio system is a little primitive but pumps out great bass. Cargo interior is a little shorter than my previous model 2004 hiace however this doesn't change my opinion of what is a great Van

Very disappointed with this vehicle – We bought Toyota Hiace commuter GL 2020 it run about 140000 kms and got DPF problem, it was fixed after long discussion with dealer but still we paid labor for fix it also after 180000kms had problem of chain shaft noise and abs airbag malfunction notification error in the car now dealer said it is not under warranty. Received a new one this year – I have driven hiaces on and off over the years. The earlier ones were horrid, thirsty, noisy and the ride and features were bleak at best. Renault was great until it needed work. Everything was super expensive. The Ford was great however with the super rough co workers and plastic floor it didn’t last long before bits and bobs were falling off it. The hiaces seemed to be less concerned with comfort like heated seats, removable clipboards, tie down points and fuel economy and more concerned with quality.

Anyway I received a brand new hiace for work recently, this replaced my old reliable one with over 300,000 on the clock. First impression was the difference with the new layout. It’s longer however the storage feels smaller. The gap in-between the seats is perfect for my fridge and coffee machine. I still only get about 600km to a tank, this is annoying when I do a 700k round trip as the transit and Renault got 900ks to a tank. It feels like I do nothing but fill it up, I’m now on a first name basis with the workers at my local servo. It does run around 9.5l per 100km so you can deduct that the tank size is the reason.

The seats are uncomfortable, the lane assist is annoying especially when it gets confused with the old lines not the new ones, no bulk head means you run the heater on max or you freeze, the cup holder in the middle heats up so it’s useless for cold drinks, the auto high beams are useless, it would be great to have armrests in the chairs, storage could be better, I prefer a bulkhead in the load bay, the mirrors are better than the old vans but still terrible and my biggest gripe is there is only 6 tie down points. The Ford and Renault have a lot more. Seriously as someone that carries a lot of stock, parts and tools it is awesome to actually be able to secure everything, for comparison the Renault had 18.

So far I have put 5000km on it in 3 weeks, so it’s been good. I have enjoyed the new tech a lot, however the gps doesn’t take the fastest option, I’ll need to look in the settings when I can be bothered. The middle cup holder heating up is perfect for prolonged warming of my coffees with how cold it’s been getting lately. The van runs well, drives well and has a reasonable amount of get up and go. Personally I like all the little spots to put things like fuel cards and the over head storage, however I find that the layouts in the Renault and transit are far better. The steering wheel button layout took a while to get used to and it is fairly straight forward.

All in all it is a decent van and I’m giving it 4 stars. Unfortunately it loses one because it has a small fuel tank, no bulkhead, lack of tie down points, the mirrors should be better and no arm rests on the seats.

couple of these roads here but the normal roads are not helping my plight . Every bump , every imperfection in the bitumen goes through the van like Í'm on solid rubber tyres . They specify 48psi in the tyres , forget that for a start if you run 48 prepare for a WORSE than I'm describing . I run 38psi and it may help. Pedders say they can upgrade the suspension for $1000 but I dont think it will help with the comfort . The bone rattler may be ok with just ping-pong balls in the back. I am trading it for a cab chassis .

Really scary and uncomfortable – Had to use this when Ford Transit Custom was being serviced. Only ok for short drivers, cabin space - headroom and foot space very cramped, moves around heaps - in a scary way in the wind. In the wet the steering is where you hope to go - you might go somewhere else though. Its just bad. Boss likes reliability but transit has 300,000km with no problems. Most uncomfortable van on the market – My employer changed my van from a Renault traffic to a brand new Hiace. Now I want to get a different job as I have a 1 hr commute. It’s hard to get in and out off. It’s the most uncomfortable van. Noisy, it sounds like a tractor. I feel so unsafe, I am squashed into the front bumper. I have no room for anything in the cab. Perfect for our work! – When looking around we needed a van that fit our medium sized containers and found at the dealer this was the best option. Many years later we have only had to get a few things fixed and services come back good almos all the time. The only small issue is we had to replace the side sliding door handle twice but we do use it a lot!  Show details

Great work companion! – Runs like a clock, shifts like a dream! Very basic interior but has everything u ever need. Got it brand new 2 years ago. Has done nearly 50k without any issue whatsoever! Drive around Sydney everyday, always carry heavy load for work. Petrol auto 12.6L/100km. Cost a bit more to run than the diesel but also more refined. A very satisfied purchase! Great if you're a gymnast – Toyota reliable of course, however you may need to take some lessons in gymnastics to prepare yourself to get in and out of the seat, there is a step but I’m thinking that might be for a miniature chihuahua to get in and out, so apart from the ridiculous entry and the uncomfortable and stiff suspension that jars your body it’s ok.  Show details

So I swapped to a far less comfortable but very well considered Hi Ace Van in 2012. It s now outside its warranty but recently Toyota found potential problems with the auto transmission, and simply fixed them at no expense. They send a person out to service the vehicle at my office at a very reasonable rate. So although it does not sit the road as well as the VW and its not as comfortable, its an incredibly reliable vehicle that costs considerably less all round.Be great if they imported the Japanese people carrier versions, they would definitely give VW a serious contender then.

Stupid thing always gets stuck (bogged) every time it rains – I'm so over it honestly every time it rains and you go on a tiny bit of grass you get bogged. Stupid thing should have a lsd and released with decent tyres. Other then that I guess it serves its purpose well except the radio buttons are stupidly big on the steering wheel.  Show details

control, steering wheel now has radio controls, no 3rd seat in front - more of a centre console with drink holders and slots for paperwork. disel engine is now fitted with a diesel particulate filter system also. much improved instrument cluster. love these vans.

Never fail you – Had a fiat before glad that junk is gone my hiace is very good 2nd hand with 270,000 KLM does me fine u can't kill it. Minor issue with window sticking and needs new breaks around very happy indeed. Reliable vans – We love these vans! Very reliable, cheap to run. 1998 model has 600k and has had one engine rebuild, 2003has been services once/year, 2013 vans are going like champions. newer van. And this was before I took hold of it. Someone else in the company drove it for the first 3000klms. He is very soft on the pedal. It needed the water pump replaced. A crack in it Toyota said. Warranty took care of it. It has now done 78k. No issues. Still hammers.

things I ldon't like and things I do...

-Seat over the wheel. Any shock goes from the wheel straight through your spine. Avoid potholes (not talking about bigish ones. No body wants to hit those), bumps, speed humps as much as possible. If you have an injured back.. then it can be difficult to live with sometimes due to the shock transfer through your body. Can't understand why the seats aren't designed a bit more like trucks.

-Noise in the cab? Yeah I guess but, Its a work van not a car. It never bothered me. If you get it decked out with rubber mats and carpet and add a little weight noise shouldn't be an issue.

I never experienced heat from under the seat like others here have mentioned. -I am 6 foot and size 11.5 boots. It can be a bit tight in the front. I often find that my left foot is angled inwards with the heel, toe angling out to the left, for comfort..hmm..or lack of. That resulted in a hole wearing through the rubber mat :-D Foot placement for large feet is awkward if you have to wear work boots.

-Toyota has removed the middle dinky seat so that they could either reach or maintain a 4star Ancap rating..haha. They gotta be kidding. $2k to get one put back in. There is no airbag in the middle so the chair had to go they told me. Hmm..iload doesn't have an airbag either yet they have a crappy dinky seat and they have 4 star Ancap rating...go figure.

-The price is pretty steep for what you get. $37k for a 2 seater van and no extras. Or $40k if you bring them down in price for a crew van. No extras and no barrier of any sort added.

I hear people talking about the crash zone in the van and how the body is basically part of the crumple zone haha. I guess this is right. Never thought about it. Don't want to either. I have never crashed a car/van in 30 years of driving nor been hit by anyone else. Motorcycle riding teaches you alot.

-Stereo is great

-air-con works just fine for Melb

-Van hammers along except at low revs as someone has mentioned. You hit a point in the rev range where it just spins up. Like a bike does :-)

-Corners well and backing in is a cinch. I don't use the center mirror just side mirrors. Hell, I wanted to remove the center mirror as it gets in the way for a tall person. Seriously, if you cannot back a van without the center mirror...you shouldn't be driving one ;-)

-I never had any issue with windscreens breaking all the time. Sure, if a stone hits it at 100kph you are going to get a crack of some sort or chip I guess.

I'll compare this vehicle to the iload, which I am looking at buying for myself soon. Why if I like toyota vans? Not sure really except I can get on, 2015, that is a crew van, sealed rear compartment so fumes don't come to the forward area, has rubber and carpet as standard. Hmm..the rear bench seat sucks though as it cannot be adjusted in any way what-so-ever. Nada. Its diesel and auto. Has a towbar and air vent on the roof for fume extraction. (paints you see) for 40k. I cannot get that deal from Toyota. Which really sucks. And the iload has a middle seat so can take 6 bodies :-)

Reliability? I see bad in both Toyota and iload from the reviews on this site. I don't know which way to go really. haha.. Drive it to the quality provided I guess.

the door instruction by Toyota, the light still on. Bring to Toyota, they say they can fix that with $300 cost, I bring to my own mechanic and replaced the filter cost only $150 an fixed! It sensor just too annoying. And now when I drive nearly 100km/h up, every times i push the accelerator the car made a vibration and noise like you riding a boat in choppy water. Almost impossible to make conversation in the cabin or listening to the radio. I bring to my mechanic he say its diff problem! Oh my god only 86000 km it already have diff problem! Why I should buy this expensive brand spanking new car while it giving me problem like this! Before I bought second hand Jap import Nissan Caravan with 107000 km on the odometer, till more than 500000 km it never have diff and any annoying problem like this. I serviced this Toyota regularly according to service manual! For a courier contractor like me, this Toyota is not acceptable at all. Not like that old model Hiace van. Shame on you Toyota. Not too economical, still use Cam Belt, Air Con not cold, Easy crack windscreen, Annoying ABS, Annoying fuel filter sensor, Diff problem, and what will come next???

At the end the diesel injectors went bad and I didn't want to spend $4000 replacing them.Van still drove well but sluggish and noisy.traded on a 2012 d4d Hiace which is pretty much identical to the 2005 model except for the 100kw 3lt motor.This van has a reasonable amount of power and is easy to drive.Handling is pretty bad

compared to the ILoad but you can't expect much from the cab over design.Has a nice stereo with Bluetooth mp3 voice recognition etc i also like the fixed price servicing they offer which cost $170 for the first 60k.Overall this vehicle is pretty good but it cost over $40 000

got the same motor as the prado and hilux but is down 27kw at only 100kw what Toyota really why?

Diesel kicks [censored word removed]! Regulation 9.5L-10L per 100 k. Thats around 650 k's to a 63 litre tank, gotta love that carting approx 200kg all the time.

Torque off the bottom with the diesel is brilliant. I drove a petrol and it had nothing down low then would scream its tits off up top as the vvt kicked in, sure fun sometimes but not what you want all day everyday.

Oh and sheet metal look at it too long and it will dint.

I got the silver, go the full side windows for better vision and aftermarket cruise control and you're sorted!

All in all a good rig. Diesel pulls, seems very reliable, easily the best looking van known to man! Expensive, only 4 speed auto, rear drums.

Spare parts dilemma – Love the van ( 2011 - 2012 model ) , until I had a crash. A cracked heater box needs to be replaced.
