Absolute beautiful car – This car is the most comfortable car I have ever owned, it is a freak on fuel we have never come across a car with the fuel economy as this car, it is very stylish and has got the power similar to an XR6, for a diesel car it does not sound like one it is quiet, I will not be selling this car for a very long time. Show details

does everything well ! – in a world of suvs i cant understate the Mondeo , it does everything well, nothing is out standing , its not a race car , but will climb through the revs steadily right up to the 220 built in limiter , its not thirsty on gas ( but can be if you dont drive well ) it is set for economy ( clearly by the gearing) and only suffers a little on… Read more

inclines ( as it doesnt want to drop gears) a little tap of the padels and your gtg , tows great with a weight capability that rivals a lot of the so called Utes! well kitted out interior that you will struggle to find anywhere, bloody shame they didnt keep making them , sigh , wont find another like it ,

Ford Mondeo lemon – Problem with sensors for engine co2 within week of purchase . Second year broken radiator housing twice cost of $3k to fix. 3rd year Now transmission issues of cost $6k to fix. Very disappointed with after sales service support waited weeks to be given a time to bring the car in to be looked at and waited week for reply. Show details

Great value for money, modern looks, lots of luxury features – We use this car as a daily driver for the school run, grocery shopping and going to work (20 mins each way). We only paid NZD 19,790 for a 2017 car with 69,000km; it had been a fleet car and done a lot of hot running. A few small stone chips on the bonnet/hood but nothing noticeable until up close. We were trading in a 2003 Ford Falcon BA so… Read more

any shift to a smaller engine was going to improve fuel efficiency. My wife and I decided EVs and hybrids were still too early in the product life cycle for us to adopt. Be warned that it requires petrol with octane rating greater than 95.

The Mondeo Trend is great value for money. Lots of features that would normally be expected in a luxury car came in our model, such as NZ GPS navigation, heated seats, proximity sensors, and lane change warnings.

All these gadgets can come at a cost. A friend of ours has a 2019 Ford Everest with the proximity sensors in the bumper (similar to the Mondeo). He says he only grazed a bollard and was up for a $5,000 repair as the entire bumper plus sensors needed replacement. Doubtless he has lost his no claims bonus!

The ride is assured and acceleration into traffic is effortless. A very quiet car.

I'd recommend reading the manual as there are lots of gadgets and warning lights and sounds to be aware of, otherwise they could be dangerous distractions when driving under certain conditions and situations.

The cabin size is in fact bigger than that of the Falcon so it is roomy. We were able to fit a full sized cello and its case in the boot. Our 17 year old son is 6'5" and can sit comfortably in all seats, including the driver's seat.

The driver's seat position can be recorded under 3 profiles and each can be selected with a touch of a button.

The Synch 3 infotainment system is easy to navigate and connected to all our family's Android phones without hesitation but the GPS maps are only updated when you have the car serviced at an authorized dealership.

My brother in law just bought a 2016 Audi A6 for NZD 30,000 and I know I got the better deal.

Highly recommended.

Updated 4 March 2023: Someone else liked our Mondeo too, and we made the mistake of leaving the keys in the car. A Newbie blunder as this is our first keyless ignition car. So, its been stolen. I know what a disaster. Insurance was supportive and we have replaced it with a 2019 Ford Mondeo Trend with only 16,000 km on the clock. NZD 24,985.

This time we got crisp white instead of silver. Still smelled new. Works fantastic. Only difference is the handbrake has swapped sides on the center console.

No SUV for me. A luxury sedan for me – This petrol engine Ford Mondeo ticks all of the boxes for me. Comfort with style and economy if driven sensibly. (Total average economy of 8.3 litres per 100 km since purchase over 1 year ago.) AEB, radar cruise, cross traffic alert & auto dipping headlamps are just some of the luxuries that are standard in this vehicle. It's a shame that Ford no longer import this vehicle. Show details

A little disappointed – Purchased 2nd hand with 32000kM, first Diesel. Issues with passenger window only going up and down in small stages (7 movements to open or close window) and internal rear view mirror always too dark and dimming doesn’t change. Suspect electronics not reset after battery change. Web based window resets don’t work. It is difficult to know exactly… Read more

what functions are actually supported, as functional info provided on sites can be contradictive.

Car looks nice, drives well and shows signs of good economy.

Dec 20, drove to Brisbane half way back transmission goes into limited function. EGR valve identified faulty but no spares in country. Took 2 weeks to organise and fit one from wrecker to get car home and new EGR valve still to be fitted once they arrive in country mid Feb.

Window function and now drivers seat still not functioning correctly. Window randomly works correctly.

Great, Reliable and great safety features packed in a car – Great economy, power and agility, love it .145,000 from 89000 hasht missed a beat. 2litre Diesel has some surprising grunt in it. Airbags all round including rear seatbelt bags. Been through several falcons but love this comfort and no brake wobble after time from overheating brakes. A joy to drive, hate adding kms to it for work purposes. Show details

Great car. Fast, reliable, spacious, comfortable, great on fuel – I got the car brand new. 4 years/75,00km later, all I can say is... what a great family car. It is very spacious, has great boot space, great acceleration even at highway speeds. No major issues of any kind. Highlights: - great diesel engine, fantastic gearbox, great acceleration - excellent fuel economy (6.9 litters) - feels solid, performs… Read more

really well through a band/great cornering - quiet for a diesel car, especially at highway speeds, pure joy to cruise at 110-120km/h - comfortable, especially the front seats - heaps of space in the boot

Not so good: - poor front visibility due to very wide front windscreen pillars; this is, in fact, the only real problem with this car, and it is a serious one - sits very low, doesn't like bumps (but it corners like it's on rails)

Best buy in its segment. Understated.

Started out as great vehicle, but now – I purchased this car in February 2018. It had 22,000KM on it, and was 14 months old. When I purchased it everything was tight, no noises, no squeals, no complaints! Fast forward 14 months and it's now 2.5 years old and at 93,000, and I hate it. Pros - Pretty fuel efficient - Diesel - Decent enough Sound system - Selectable Driving modes -… Read more

Great LED headlights - Autonomous braking works well - Radar is good for long drives - Fairly Quiet most times - Loads of Features - Cool Ambient lighting - Electric Tailgate - When working - Rear Privacy Windows - Auto Dimming mirror - Electric Steering Column with memory

Cons - AC not cold - Unreliable - Expensive parts - Rubbish After sale Service - Quality Control Issues - Rattles - Not good for stop start traffic - Can sometimes be very laggy when taking off. - Becomes very slow, and unresponsive about 2000KMs before it's service - Ridiculously expensive service $425 for first 2 services, then $895 for 3rd..rinse repeat. - Proximity Keyless entry is a mixed bag of emotions. Works from time to time

We have continuously had the bolts for the side skirt replaced (they keep coming lose, and Ford charges $27 per bolt!) It sends a horrible rattle up the driver side door if left untreated, the AC compressor seized, left the car with Ford, told it would be in the next day - didn't arrive until a week later. The automatic rear tailgate regularly stops working, and has come out of alignment, despite being under new car warranty still, Ford refuse to fix it, despite assuring me they would when I got my AC fixed, the driver's seat and passengers seat now rattle like crazy and want me to pay $905 per seat BASE ONLY (a common issue found on many forums, Ford Also won't fix), the drivers display dash takes a good 30 seconds or more to come on at times, regularly throws faults on the dash about the lights not working, or hand brake needing servicing, the GPS is hopeless at its job, there's a clicking coming from under the car that Ford "cannot replicate" but yet 3 independent mechanics could, the auto highbeams are the most infuriating thing I've ever dealt with! Unlike most cars with auto highbeams where you push the leaver forward and the highbeams turn on and off as needed automatically, Ford's is totally automatic from the moment you turn the car on. The AC tends not to be very cold and my biggest bug bear is that the stop start turns off at the lights to keep powering the AC, but the compressor doesn't kick back in until you start driving again so it doesn't cool. I could keep listing things wrong with this car all day, but I guess you get what you pay for! I've attached a badge to the back and sides as a way of silent protest!

A slight update! From 2 stars down to one. Car is now at 99,500, I had the car in for a service with my independent mechanic where they brought up the fact that the transmission was leaking. Took it to Ford and sure enough it is leaking. They're fixing that issue tomorrow. They have also decided they're going to fix the drivers seat under warranty, so that is a little light at the end of the tunnel I wasn't expecting to see.

The retail price for the Titatium is quite pricey but i manage to get a great deal which makes it worth it.

The turbo Diesel engine is punchy and is smooth on highways and even around the city. Considering its a diesel, its relatively quiet inside.

I haven’t had any issues yet so can’t comment on those.

Great driving car – Well after much consideration what to buy after my Ford territory I bought the Ford Mondeo titanium wagon. Hard to find to test drive but hunted and found one. It's lacking a row of seats and some ground clearance but I only used the 3rd row in the territory about 10 times.

Plenty of electronics if that's your thing.

No issues. But the AC could be cooler in the hot temps.

Great family car – Excellent value for money. Fresh and attractive design for this category, more than enough room inside, perfect set of options for family use (driver seat memory really helps when people with significant difference in height both drive the car interchangeably, front parking sensors in addition to rear sensors and camera) plus lots of convenient helpers. Horribly underrated car – In the age of senseless SUV purchasing, the Mondeo is an absolute godsend in large family cars. A full size vehicle with every bit of equipment and safety features complete with a boot that puts 7 seater cargo holds to shame. There's enough guts to get the engine up and about when needed but otherwise just chugs along without issue.

The boot space in the wagon is phenomenal and with seats folded down you could have a party in the back if you wanted.

Adaptive cruise is one of those features that's hard to forgo once you've have it, all of the safety features included are often high priced extras on other vehicles, automatic and electric everything and the seats are some of the most comfortable I've sat in.

My only small gripe is the Ford Sync 2.0 software. Not having any compatibility with Apple CarPlay or Android is just unforgivable these days.

Overall it's been the best car I've owned and for what probably just gets seen as a boring fleet car is actually a bloody good vehicle that's criminally underrated in a glut of generic SUV's.

The Mondeo is a great car to drive – Driving the car is effortless, up to date with safety features, comfortable seating, modern looking. 2018 Update: Follow up on my review from two years ago.

I still enjoy driving this car. No problems so far. Being top of the range in Australia one would expect additional inclusions which are only available in overseas markets e.g. rear cross traffic warning, a major exclusion in this car for some reason. Ventilated seats instead of heated only. Massage seat (drivers seat) not even an option at time of purchase. Speed sign recognition not available.

Lane keeping assistance is unreliable, more often greyed out than useable. Does not function at all (including smart cruise control) in heavy rain.

Fuel economy is very much up to the individual. Using cruise control whenever possible contributes a lot to lower fuel consumption. Drive the Mondeo more spiritedly and you will pay the price. My best was 6.7 litres, very careful driving. Average is around 8.5 litres. It is a big car after all, just an inch or so shorter than the Falcon.

Overall, I can't fault the car mechanically or otherwise.

Never mind the 7 months wait for it! I have done 55,000kms know and mechanically the car is faultless. My steering wheel was replaced but the new one has just bubbled a few weeks ago on a hot day in Sydney. The interior drivers door panel has worn away where I rest my arm while driving. My FG Falcon G6ET that has 117,000kms has no wear on either. Good car , the interior isn't the toughest and I'm not rough on cars. My Second Mondeo Diesel – There is previous Mondeo MC and a MD Wagon review by me on this site elsewhere. firmer tyres based on the load carrying duty.

I try not to repeat what other had previous reported as I concur. I have done 600 km so far, and I conclude that the MC and MD are different designs, something like a Mazda 6 / Mondeo / Volvo 60 all built of the same box of sub parts. The MD is a clone of the US Fusion rather than the Euro fettled MC.

It is a soft car, floatly like the US likes, rather than Euro or Mazda Zoom Zoom. It just feels like a US Cruiser now, though it does attempt to have good handling, it heart is an American Freeway.

Which bring me to the American issues, the bonnet release on the LH side foot well, the electric brake on the LH side of the centre console, (with 2 water bottles in the console, It's bleeding obvious why the US want it there; the arm angle is unnatural for us, but right for them), the Owners Manual with LH drive photo's of the wiper and indicator stalks.

What I would like to see is Digital Speedo. The Trend speedo needle is too wide to clearly see the difference in 10 kph segments. Policing here is a rumoured 1.5 kph tolerance.

The SYNCH 3, cannot be asked for DAB+ stations, only AM + FM, presumably another USA quirk and you cannot make a memory 'favourites' of AM, FM, DAB for the steering wheel memory button. You have to wind your way through all 15 DAB's, all 12 AM, all 15 FM's unless you use the Touch screen.

The background colour of the Touch screen, Radio, Sat Nav is light blue and gets a bit too much in daylight, but can be dimmed (still too attention getting) and can be toggled to Black and white for night.

SYNCH 3 is better than SYNCH 2, but still too complex for my needs of a simple car radio.

The radio based proximity key, is not my idea of fun. If I leave the key in my pocket, close the drivers door with the engine running, and walk around the front to the LH side door and open and crap that door, the car horn blasts out twice and scares the blazes out of me.

My car has all electric seats, but the seat back motor has too high a gearing and the lumbar can't be raised vertically up or down, just more or less via pump and bladder. I find the seats to confining across the hip width.

An option can be selected to move the seat back 3 " for easy exit. But when you re enter, please do not put the seat belt back on, but press the engine start button to the accessory position, as then the seat will move forward itself and you won't get strangled by the now over tight seat belt.

The idea is good, but it's frustration to just jump in, click the belt on, press the button and then find as you didn't press the foot break pedal down hard enough, the car doesn't start, the seat rolls back and the radio wants to close down. You need to practice this!

The auto stop start. If you only press lightly on the break pedal, it keeps the engine running which is useful for creeping traffic, but if you press harder it stops almost immediately, but it does benefit the fuel economy.

This feature is USA biased of course, as their traffic lights have a red time of 2 to 3 times ours.

Fuel economy of 5.4 L/100 km is often seen and is better than the 6.6 of the MC Diesel.

The car interior has been quietened down, but this Diesel engine is noticeably 'tickier' than the MC. I could never hear the old car's motor, but can this one, and it seems to rev lower which is the cause I think.

The noise on rough sealed roads intrudes via the car suspension rather than the springs and dampers, the same as the MC which is disappointing. Good roads and it's great, where the MC was just good.

Update, now 2500 km:

No real problems experienced so far. Dealer first check over service is 500 km away.

The only real issues that stand out now that I have done so 2000 km since the above initial feedback is that the indicator clicking is far too soft for me to hear, and the windscreen washer jet of water on the front and rear windscreens is a weak mist rather than a stream of water. Like it has run out of water, but the bottle is full. I suspect that detergent has thickened as it looks like a blocked strainer gauze at the common bottle.

Update, now 3500 km : Complementary 3000 km service

I didn't report to the Dealer any issues for adjustment or repair.

The car was delivered back with the steering response changed.

I said :" It is a soft car, floatly like the US likes,". . ...

Well I very pleased to say that has gone. The tyre pressures have not altered, but the feel of the steering is more 'on centre' and heavier than as delivered as new. I was told no story about anything, so I conclude they had an update for the ECU computer and now happily it feels the same as my previous MC Mondeo which I like.

The MC has hydraulic power steering, and this MD has electric.

So I assume Australian feedback has forced Ford to alter it from the US sister car preferences.

Other than that all is good, and the A/Cond. worked great through the summer heatwaves, cool banana's Mondeo.

Newer is better? Depends on your point of view! – I've moved from an MC Zetec TDCi Mondeo to the MD Trend TDCi and there are plenty of differences to like and dislike, listing them below. Likes: Cabin is a lot quieter Marginally better handling Increased electronic driver aids such as Lane Keeping, Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic High Beam etc. Sync 2 touch screen ICC… Read more

Dislikes:

Electronic driver aids in my opinion are there to aid, not distract, as someone else has noted. The pre-collision alert is incredibly sensitive and in city traffic is a distraction.

Automatic high beam - I've just turned if off, keeps coming on for a couple of seconds and then has to turn off.

Simple things over engineered - replacement of headlamp bulbs takes almost an hour?

Still no full size spare, its not even an option

Having mud spats on the vehicle, negotiating every speed bump is a challenge with the spats impacting them.

Poor lighting in comparison to the MC Mondeo, the projector lamps do a good job of containing the light, but the OEM lighting lacks intensity.

For me I'm still getting used to the vehicle, but for anyone transitioning from the older Mondeo to the MD, will likely face similar challenges. However, when you compare the entire package, you win some you lose some, but overall package is pretty good.

Still luvving this car! – Third Update: I have since updated the Mondeo to a 2017 model due to lease changeover. Both have been diesel models. The current vehicle has now done 20K, the previous MD had done approx 43K when traded. Both cars have been fantastic. They both achieved 5.4-5.6L/100K around town, and consistently achieve 5L/100K on a trip (loaded boot, aircon… Read more

and cruise running), though better if I turn off cruise and air. About 4.7-4.8.

They are great vehicles, well built, no rattles, great features, very comfortable over distances, sure-footed, quiet and great acceleration. Remember, its a diesel. The redesigned turbo and transmission have removed the usual diesel turbo lag and it uses the transmission quickly and effectively to achieve acceleration for overtaking.

Having driven the Titanium model for three years, I don't notice the alerts and technology features so much now, they've just become incorporated into driving routines. But I love the auto boot lift, reversing camera, self park features, lane departure and lane change features. When driving older cars I miss these the most.

Both MD Mondeo's have been totally reliable with zero issues of concern, mechanical or otherwise. Services are done every 15000K by the book. This is important for oil and transmission fluid changes as they have a set lifespan. I achieved a great trade on the previous vehicle from a Ford Dealer and was very happy with price on the new one.

Not sure why Ford don't advertise these more aggressively as they are a top vehicle. I still give them a 5-star thumbs up with ease. For those wanting an extremely comfortable and efficient vehicle, packed with features and technology the Titanium model is a great choice.

I have never felt less control in a vehicle – The Mondeo is a very nicely built car. It's comfortable and drives very well but is severely let down by massively over-complex controls and features that leave you feeling uncertain as to what is going to happen most of the time you are driving. Credit to Ford for developing imaginative systems towards fully automated driving, but they should… Read more

have thought a LOT more carefully about the value these features add to the driving experience before shoe-horning them all into this vehicle. It's just far too confusing.

Examples:

- there are no less than 5 separate buttons to control the dome light

- there are 4 separate control panels on the steering wheel alone

- there are controls for headlight angles, and lane detection, etc. all spread around the normal control areas

While I quite liked the auto engine shutoff that stops and restarts the engine whenever you stop moving (it takes a minute to get used to - basically trying to get a combustion engine to mimic an electric motor), I was a little freaked out when I stopped the car once, put on the handbrake, got out and came back to the car to find the engine running! You have to be constantly aware that the engine not running is not the same as OFF.

Some of the features are just a pointless waste of money, though some may like this stuff - like side lights that come on when you corner, seat heaters, separate climate controls, auto-folding side mirrors, etc. I personally dislike a car flashing lights and warnings at me when it thinks I'm too close to the car in front, but once again, the overly safety concerned may prefer to outsource their thinking in this regard.

Some are downright annoying and potentially dangerous. Annoying means a gear selector that goes straight through to "sport" mode at the end of travel and is difficult to find the "drive" selection. Dangerous means headlights that think for you and flick onto high beam automatically and without prompting. I don't even know what the "interior scan" that comes on every time I shut the car down is - I think that falls into annoying.

On wireless keys: we had simple mechanical keys that just worked and never failed. Now we seem to need keys that you still have to carry but don't have to use - and build a whole lot of additional failure modes into the car (what happens if you start the car but the keys are outside, what happens when the battery fails, etc). I personally preferred to know that when I press the lock button the car is locked - not "maybe locked if you are far enough away".

So my summary is that this would be a very nice driving car and a pleasure to own if Ford stripped a whole lot of the pointless rubbish out of it. And it would certainly be lighter and cheaper - and lets face it, more reliable as all these systems will no doubt be pricey to fix when they break. On the very few occasions I have been able to ignore the circus inside the car I've found it a pure pleasure to drive; fantastic mid-range acceleration in the diesel.

Mondeo MD 2016 Diesel Wagon Test Drive – There is prior review of the older MC Model from me which reflects on this test drive report of a base model MD Diesel Wagon. My complaint of the MC has been totally resolved by this MD model. This was tyre roar on coarse chip sealed bitumen from the OEM fitted Goodyear Efficient Grip to my MC being 215/50/17 size. The extra sound proofing and… Read more

the acoustic glass windshield and side glass have paid off as the test car with the same tyres (but 235 wide) was absolutely quiet on the same roads. Off course, new tyres with new soft and deep rubber will be better than worn down rubber, and I am acting on my memory of what I remember of those MC same tyres. In my MC review I bag those tyres, but the fault is now revealed by this MD as the car not the tyres.

Efficient Grip are claimed to be G/Years quietest on their web site, but Ford being cheap skates in stripping the car to make it more fuel efficient or just being greedy to save money.

The base model wagons seem to have as OEM fitting Good year E/Grip and the Trend and Titanium have Michelin Primacy 3 ST's. I have fitted those to my MC wagon as being ultra quiet by the web and it has turned out to be so.

Those MC tyres wore out at 37 000 KM and the Michelin's cost Aust. $239 each fitted and balanced.

The MD Wagon here in Australia has privacy dark glass fitted from behind the B pillar to the back, and I found that when parked in the shade, it was too dark looking in the rear vision mirror to exit back onto the road having pulled up. It was like dangerous, and I had to use the external wing mirror for safety.

The auto stop / start feature was an unnecessary feature in stop start traffic when creeping along.

The 2 litre 143 kw /400 NM diesel has a bit more grunt than my weaker 2 Litre MC, and this MD motor tune is much more refined and is much much preferred.

The MC feels like it has been tuned for too much economy and goes to higher than needed gear too early and struggles.

The MD has got it right Mr Ford, but the panel fit of these Spanish assembled cars is hit and miss still, some 6 + months after release. Not so good.

An accomplished and very economical car – I bought this low mileage Ford lease list car on the advice of a Ford employee with expertise on the (Peugot) diesel engine it uses. You really are not aware that it's a diesel from inside the car or when driving it. My first impression was the surprising power. This car wants to hoon and Mr Plod won't let you. It has stacks of acceleration and… Read more ·  1

the reason is some very clever engine management which was later adopted by the European manufacturers who probably wished they'd thought of it first. When you roll your foot in to the accelerator the computer recognises that you require power. So it cuts the aircon, cuts the alternator and slightly boosts the turbo. The result is a very strong surge of power.

This is a Titanium model which means it has all the bells and whistles available then in 2015. There are so many features I can't list them all here. One that I use a lot is 'follow me' adaptive cruise control. It uses radar to sense the car ahead and match it's speed with a drivers option to set the distance back. There's absolutely no stress driving in heavy traffic. If the traffic ahead stops suddenly the car will brake sharply, sound a warning tone and disconnect the cruise. It won't stop, unlike the later models.

There is stability control, lane departure warning with 'stick shake' if you drift over the lane markings. There is what seems to be an accurate fatigue warning system. The headlights dip automatically and have curve following. The wipers operate automatically. There is voice control, Bluetooth connectivity, phone charging outlets, heated seats, heated demister windscreen etc etcetera.

I love it.

At 100 kph GPS on the Geelong highway the instant fuel readout was 4 litres per 100 kms and it's using about 7 litres around town. I forget when I last filled it and I've driven from Portland to Berwick to Sorrento, Geelong, then back to Portland on one tank and it still reported more than 100 km range left.

I consider the handling brilliant. It corners flat and predictably. It is sensitive to ripples in the bitumen presumably because of the low profile tyres.

The ride is firm. Tyres are expensive and the brakes will need relining more often than less automated vehicles because the pads are soft to initiate the anti lock for ESC. The sloping screen does let sun onto the front seats.

DSG? Engineers advice, treat it like a manual not a slush box. Either be moving or stopped - don't creep in traffic. It's a computer operated manual gearbox and doesn't have a slippy torque converter. It has hill start assist.

You never know how good a car is until you've worn it out, hopefully at 200,000 kms plus. But at the moment, I'd buy another.

Added

I've now owned the car for nearly 12 months. Average fuel around town and country combination is 7 litres/100.

Love the adaptive cruise and safety features. Driver fatigue alert is very accurate. It's a drivers car and holds the road like a limpet.]

Fantastic car, comfortable, safe and great to drive! – Mine is a Titanium Wagon. It is well built, well equipped and very comfortable. The car performs perfectly, is great to drive and I'd rate it the best vehicle I've ever owned. Mine is diesel, economical and with great performance. I chose it above a Mercedes 250 wagon, better safety provisions and (for me) more comfortable with at least equivalent performance.  Show details
