14 years and counting..! – Bought in 2010....and given a hammering ever since..! Used on carpets, lino and wood flooring in several houses. Also the cars interior. Still performing brilliantly. Have always taken the carpet head and dirt compartment & filters fully apart and knocked all the dust etc out of them. Amazed at how easily it all comes apart. One new filter bought… Read more · 1
a few years ago but apart from that it's working like new. Yes, it's a bit of a pain how it catches on the corners of the furniture when it's being pulled along behind you but that's better than having to carry the whole thing. Lots of accessories available from 3rd parties so everything covered. Very Happy..!!
Really good & durable vacuum cleaner – I've had this vacuum cleaner for 12 years now and have always been very happy with it. My house is very small (70 sqm) with mostly tiles and a very small carpet area, a dog & 2 kids. I vacuum at least once a week but usually twice. I regularly clean the filter and the barrel and my tradie husband has even pinched it for builders cleans. Just the… Read more · 2
other day a tiny piece broke off on the handle which is affecting the suction quality, but am hoping I can replace this part rather than buying a new vacuum cleaner.
Continually blocks – Have had nothing but trouble with this vacuum cleaner. It continually blocks at the narrowing of the pipe just before the filter system. A nightmare to unclog. Would never buy again.
Positive reviews
Found in hard rubbish. Removed the blockage. Works brilliant. Best machine ever – So much suction on carpet and tiles that the vacuum head sticks to the floor. Blockages can happen in the small hose at the canister. As long as only dust and fluff is vacuumed it is brilliant Show details
Can't believe all the negative reviews – I have had this appliance for over 6 years and have not had a problem with it. I use the hard floor attachment for our floating floors and the turbo head for the carpets. I have taken this vacuum up the river to our shack and sucked all the sand and grit out of my carpets and never had a problem. Just recently had a full service done on this appliance and expect it to last a good few years yet. Show details
Sensational! – I have had my Dyson for over 5years! I Upgraded from the DC29 to the DC39 on a 'Good Guys' sale and it still cost me a fortune. After many models and makes over the years that didn't live up to their expectations, I saved up for this Brand and model. I LOVE IT! You cannot buy a product and expect to use it without consistent care. I have followed… Read more
instructions with cleaning and care of this product and it has rewarded me with 'amazing' suction, reliability and constant usage. I also 'Clean' houses for work and 'nothing' comes close to the Dyson and I have used a fairly wide range of vacuum cleaners. 'I' had broken the handle attachment... No problem, customer service organised a replacement as good faith! Please CLEAN your little pop-up filter, it is the key to the amazing suction. I don't know anything about the other models, but we are lucky to always have a choice in what we buy.

Was excellent – This was a great cleaner, Exceptional performance but didn’t last long and now it’s ready to be thrown out, Don’t think I’ll buy another when other brands perform the same and last longer Show details

Motor just blown up – Use the vacuum mostly on tiles and wooden floor, after about 5 years having it the motor blow up. My old vacuum, not Dyson, was working for about 20 years. Don’t think I’m going to buy Dyson again, cost fortune and is worst than other brands Show details

Very Disappointed – I have had my vacuum for less than 5 years and now the motor has blown up and tripped the fuses in the house. I was vacuuming carpet for 5 minutes so it's not like it was working hard. Very surprised as I thought I get a few more years given it's infrequent use. For over $1000.00 I can't see me buying another Dyson product.. Show details

All right cleaner, poor design – Cleaner worked well from new but the DC39 has an internal air cleaner/filter that cannot be accessed unless the owner has the unusual shaped tool to undo the screws that hold the two halves of the body together. Therefore unless the owner has some practical skills the machine needs to be taken to a service person to be cleaned properly. Also the… Read more
motor bearings are a single shield bearing instead of a double shield meaning they are more prone to ingress of dust and therefore wearing out. I have had the machine for four years and have already had to replace the motor bearings once.
Put up with this waaaay too long – We've had this for nearly 6 years. And I don't know why we didn't bin it earlier. It couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. 2 years after buying it, we decided it was pretty sad and bought an LG Roboking. That thing kicks the dyson to the curb. But we kept this POS for doing a weekend clean and a quick whip round before visitors etc.Only… Read more
thing that managed to do was make the house smell, but still we kept it.
For the last 6 moths, we've been eyeing off handstick-type machines, and today, we bit the bullet.
Vacuumed this morning with the dyson, went and bought a Vax VX63 (there was no way I was ever going to buy another dyson), and went over a rug that was "cleaned" earlier (before even charging it)... MY GOD! DYSON DID NOT SUCK, and normally not sucking would be a good thing, but this is a vacuum cleaner.
The Vax is way better. I wish we did it sooner. And it has an actual powered head, unlike the dyson that has some rubbish spinning wheel powered by suction.
Now deciding whether to pull the dyson apart, clean it, and put it gumtree for what they're really worth (<$50), or just throw it in the nearest skip.

Meh – I bought this vacuum cleaner because it was a Dyson and everyone raves about a Dyson. It’s ability to sense and change when going from hardwood floors to carpet was also a great draw card. Unfortunately, I’ve been disappointed with it for quite some time. It just doesn’t do a great job. My robotic vacuum seems to pick up more pet hair than the… Read more
Dyson.
It nearly died a year or so ago. With nothing to lose, my husband did some handyman surgery on it and managed to fix it. It was plugged up with fluff in one of the bends in a tube inside.
It’s also really awkward to store. It seems to take up heaps of space, whether you store it upright or retract the handle and store it flat.
Don’t think I’ll be buying a Dyson again.

Not living up to the name – After wanting to own a Dyson for it's powerful suction i was disappointed that its performance didn't live up to the hype. Starting with the positives, the vacuum is very easy to move around easy to put together. Performance is ok as will pick up most things from tiled floors. The negatives, the vacuum is not good at picking up hair from carpet,… Read more
the plastic parts are a little flimsy. Considering the price point of Dyson and performance i would not recommend this product.

Absolutely Shocking...Very Disappointed – I purchased a Dyson DC39 for Good Guys, almost 4 years ago.It cost me over $700.It was fantastic for the first 2 years. Then came the loss of suction. The cyclone broke down after 3.5 years , so I replaced it..no problems. But the suction still wasn't that great.Contacted Dyson and was told $80 service fee, plus postage and then we will give you a… Read more
costing to repair. Not one week after that the motor blew up.I was vacuuming my house ( no cats, dogs or small children ) so only general dust etc.when the Dyson turned off and then on , made a pop sound and then came the smoke .Dysons response..basically to bad so sad,the warranty for Australia is 2 years.
Really!!!
I paid a fortune for a vacuum that lasted 4 years.
The irony here..we have a old cheap vacuum ( cost $150 10 years ago )..it is kept for out door work , such as cars. That is still going strong.
Shame on you Dyson.Very expensive rubbish.

Absolutely shocking – After my first dyson blew up after 7 yearrs I thought I would stand by dyson and pay big money to purchase this one. After 2.5 years it got a burning smell and blew up. You'll spend your life unscrewing it just to unclog it – This vaccum is fantastic! Sucks up dirt really well...until you suck up that inconspicuous piece of Lego your kids left on the floor. This isn't just like your regular vacuum where you pull the middle off to unclog it, the part that leads into the dust catcher is ridiculously narrow. To unclog it, you need to remove screws and sometimes… Read more
stick a coat hanger down there to dislodge bits that have stuck there. I seem to spend more time unclogging this machine than I do vacuuming.
Getting my kids to do the vacuuming is a small night mare as they constantly get it clogged.
I spent so much money on this machine too. If it weren't for that horrifically narrow passage way to the dust collector, this would be a great vacuum cleaner.
Sounds like most Dyson vacuums are designed to last 3 years – BANG, SMOKE and its gone. For a machine that is at the top end of the price ladder for vacuums, did not make to much of an impression. I was forever cleaning out the bend at the end of the hose leading up to the barrell. Very disappointed, and think I will definitely look at another brand. Show details

Worst design for such an expensive brand – There was loud roaring noise Followed by a burning smell and then GONE. There goes an overpriced vacuum. I might just go back to the mainstream brand, at least they're cheap enough to replace. It was my second dyson, the first one was superb. Easy to clean, no mess. And it lasted years. This one, DC39 was a major disappointment. It's messy… Read more

Pity about the entry into the cyclone clogging up all the time – This vacuum cleaner would be 5 stars if only the suction tube didn't change shape an narrow down as it gets to the vacuum cleaner. Should of lasted longer than 3 years – It was a nice vacuum until it was time to empty, nice you don't have to buy bags but it is very messy and dirty job, a lot of banging, scrubbing with toothbrush. roundtrip plus bridge tolls to drop off then come back to pick up, but when I told her I couldn't make the drive and asked why they don't have a repair center in San Francisco, the call mysteriously disconnected For the price they charge the motor should of lasted longer than three years. Dyson should also find another way to service their customers in the Bay Area. It is a cheaply made plastic piece of junk.
Stopped Working And Loud Noise From The Ball – Extremely disappointed with this as I paid a huge price for it. I thought Dyson was a reliable trusted brand and didn't expect my vacuum to become faulty so soon. I used this for general vacuuming around the house and the suction was great at first but then slowed down and now I think the motor has blown leaving me without a vacuum.

Threw it in the bin today! – Today I did the best thing ever...I threw this ridiculously overpriced vacuum cleaner in the bin! Dyson representative - don't bother to reply to my review stating that I need to contact Dyson. This machine should have lasted years and years for the price paid. Unless you are going to offer me a refund I don't want to hear from you.
Only good for a short period of time – It was a wonderful machine for 2 years. Then it died on me a couple of weeks ago. Just after the warranty expired. I rang Dyson customer service and instructed to bring it to a service department in Brisbane. Just picked it up today, tested, just like new one again. The good thing is No Charge for the repairs at all.. That should give back some confidence to the buyers.
Great Service – I have the multi floor, I purchased it 2 years ago for around $500. Had no issues with it, although i wish i had of purchased the turbine head. 2 months ago the motor blew. Thankfully i found my receipt with a month left on the warranty. I called Dyson, yes i waited for a while but found ringing later in the arvo was faster. Organised the service.… Read more · 1
I took it in today and its already been fixed and is getting posted to me tomorrow. I cannot fault that service at all. The only issue is why would a 2 year old vacuum blow up, but i then thought about it, the dust isnt getting trapped into a bag, its a big cannister which allows t to travel to the motor. Overall i love Dysons and cannot wait to upgrade.
Disappointed with this expensive supposedly reputable vacuum – I lashed out and bought a Dyson DC39 just over three years ago, expecting to get a robust and reliable vacuum which would last for many years. It is used basically once a week. I've kept the filter clean and recently bought a new filter to see if that would help. At first it seemed the goods, but after several months it began sounding laboured. No… Read more
matter how many times I clean it all out and clean and change the filter, it continues to sound as if the motor is over working, while the suction is less than desirable.
We have timber floors and it really does not get a flogging, as I sweep with a broom most days, to keep the larger rubbish picked up. Now I find I have to empty the dust container and beat out the filter twice per vacuuming to even pick up at all. The slightest amount of dust in the (new) filter, still seems to be too much for it.balsonthe automatic head does not seem to be particularly effective for either timber floors nor rugs.
It seems a lot of money and effort to have spent for a not very good result. Now having read the other reviews it appears there are a lot of problems with this model not performing!

2nd Dyson Vacumm to blow up in 6 years:( – This is my second Dyson Vacuum Cleaner in 6 years. The first (Dyson DC 08) blew up after 3 years, I replaced it with the Dyson DC39 & it has blown up today after almost 3 years. In the beginning they are great Vacumm cleaners but after a while they lose suction. I've always cleaned filters at the recommended time and have even replaced filter in… Read more
the one that blew up today.
It has been sluggish for about 6months now & before each use I have to bang the dust out of the filter (even if there is only a small amount of dust) or it won't suck very well at all. Even after cleaning it back to showroom condition it still doesn't improve. My husband has blown every crevice out with his air compressor and it still only improves slightly. I only have a small 3 bedroom house, half carpet & half tiles. I do vacuum more than I probably need to (4 times a week) however a Vacuum with a great reputation & big price tag should be able to handle the work load.
I'm extremely disappointed and can't afford to replace this one as my husband has recently lost his job.
I haven't called the call centre as it is out of warranty and didn't want to be disappointed further by being told there is nothing they can do or to be told I'd have to have it sent away to be repaired, something I simply cannot afford at present. :(
I thought I was the only one that hated this machine...Clearly not! – It is terrible! I too went from a Meile with a turbo head which was a really good vacuum but I wanted to go bagless to save on extra costs and Dyson seemed like the obvious choice given the rave reviews. I have been completely disappointed with it for over 2 years but as others have said its too expensive to just throw away. Same trouble with the… Read more
transition from carpet to wood floors I didn't think a replacement head would have fixed it I just assumed it was another poor performance issue with the Dyson product...I should have got onto Dyson to replace mine! Now it barely works - 2 of the 4 little wheels have fallen out of the cleaning head, the clasp on the barrel doesn't work I have to manually put it back together every time I empty it...its a nightmare. So Dyson, is it just this model DC39 that was such a poor performer and thats why it appears you have discontinued it?

Extremely dissapointed in this vacumn – Every time I use this I fight with the brushes to turn. You would think that a company like Dyson would see all of these complaints and do something about it. I have one daughter that I discouraged from buying and will not recommend it to anyone. I will also put a bad review on Yelp and Facebook. I have only had it 6 months....bummer
Diason – Blocks up easy cyclone head gets bunged up with dust and refused suction filter gets bunged up to easy for ever taking apart have to bang cyclone part to get dust out or it does not suck just a very poor machine and dyson know it is know it is sick of washing filter waiting for ever for it to dry getting covered in dust banging cyclone head to unblock it total waste of money hate it expensive mistake I would say this vac sucks. ! Doesn't work on wooden floors – I replaced my 20 year old Miele with a DC39 Dyson and was happy to pay the premium price for what I expected would be a superior product, and I love the purple colour, however am very disappointed with the performance of this vacuum cleaner. I like the turbo head on the carpet and I feel that it does a good job there, and gives it a good beating,… Read more
although I have to pull the trigger constantly to restart the turbo head. It also doesn't like shaggy rugs. However the worst thing about this so called multi-floored vacuum cleaner is that the turbo head stops completely on wooden floors and then there is no suction. It is completely useless on a timber floor. Dyson claims the turbo head can go seamlessly from carpet to hard floor but I have not been able to master this at all. I paid too much to ditch this vacuum cleaner. I know it comes with a separate brush head but it doesn't make my life any easier if I have to attach and remove and then reattach an accessory as I move from carpeted room to timber floors. Wish I had bought another Miele instead of this Dyson.
If you are a tall person, eg, I am 175 cm, or 5.9", the hose fully extended is still not very long, so you will be stooping as you vacuum.
Very disappointed DC39 – just over two years (out of warranty by a few months) old and the motor was arcing and we shut it down before it caught on fire. I have stripped it to find the cause and found the carbon brushes to be badly chipped on one edge, the internal Hepa filter was clean externally but lots of carbon residue in the inside. Dissappointed – We've had our Dyson vacuum cleaner for two and a half years now. I find it very cumbersome and heavy to use - it has to persuaded and held at a low angle to move along surfaces (especially bad on wooden floors) - which is not good for my crook back. The revolving brush in the head turns off inconveniently without apparent reason while vacuuming.… Read more
The head is awkward to manoeuvre around corners and in tight spots. Although the suction is strong, the pick-up is average - invariably, several passes are needed to ensure all dirt and crumbs etc. are collected, and even then we find items not picked up after vacuuming.
Worst nightmare – I convinced my husband to buy this machine and I've never heard the end of it since. I thought we were buying quality. Firstly the turbo head turns off at least 10 times and I have to push the button many times before it turns back on. The Handel on the top hurts my wrists after vacuuming the house and the machine sucks up items and spits them out… Read more
