I loved it until it melted itself – I bought one of these irons years ago and it had a good life of much solid use. As an iron it was pretty good, very reliable and did what it said on the tin. A week ago though, whilst ironing a work uniform I was surprised to see it start burning what I was ironing - so I stood it up and looked at the clothing, somewhat confused. A moment… Read more

later I noticed the iron began smoking furiously and it looked like the internals were melting through the baseplate. The iron destroyed itself completely, and I was lucky it didn't cause a fire.

Dangerous! – I have had this iron for about 2 or 3 years. Tonight I started iRoning brand new Witchery shorts. I The iron burned the shorts then started smoking and set off the smoke alarm. I quickly turned off the iron and unplugged it. Iron continued to smoke and the outside of the iron melted into oblivion. I took the iron outside hoping it was not going… Read more

to hurt me, while it continued its path of self destruction. Extremely dangerous and my $80 shorts are ruined.

(And the ironing board cover which is seriously burned).

I see I am not the only person who has had this experience. Why on earth was there not a product recall?

Love this iron! – Great iron. Lasted me 4 years. I have never had a problem with Sunbeam irons. I cried the day my iron died, electrical burning smell. Oh well. I get to go shopping for a new iron!

Smoked and fell apart – Ironed work shirt. Iron started to smoke and burnt internal parts. Iron fell apart. Very dangerous. Iron was not that old.

Minimum Steam – Reasonably expensive iron so disappointed in poor performance. Very little steam and heavy. This iron drags across the clothes because it is so heavy and does not press the wrinkles out even on maximum heat. I chose this particular iron because I have had no issues with Sunbeam previously. I also liked the features but it just does not do the job.

A shocker – Initailly bought this iron around two years ago. It kept tripping the power so after around 6 months I returned it to DJ's who replaced it with same. Same problem, every couple of times it was turned on - power out. I thought maybe it was our power, but now I see it appears to be a common problem. The iron also dripped water, staining… Read more

clothes.

The cord placement makes the iron unstable. Yep it was a really bad purchase, but the worst was about to happen. I bought this iron because it turned itself off if left on. Luckily last Friday I did not leave the iron on accidentally, otherwise our house would have burned down. Initially, the iron started to stick to the clothes I was ironing - my sons good work shirt.

Next thing you know smoke is billowing out of the iron. I turned the iron off at the power, and straight after the base separated from the rest of the iron and the dials popped off. The base of the iron went dark brown. Had I not been in attendance I have no doubt that the iron would have caught fire. Not even with all this did the iron shut itself down!

I am about to head out to buy another iron, thought I would check this site to see what others recommended. Thats when I discovered the reality of this iron and the same problems that I had, were reiterated by others.

Sunbeam irons have always been the iron of my choice - but never again. Whatever happened to the plain stainless steel base, steam and dry iron with an auto shutoff.

I should be taking this up with Sunbeam, especially since I have ruined clothes, but since I do not have my initial receipt I doubt they will want to know about it. And it does not matter because never again will a Sunbeam iron enter my home.

An Iron that does not get hot – We purchased the iron just after our wedding. It worked for 2 years and 3 months. Up until this time the only faults were minor being the cord kinked making it at times diffcult to use and occassionally it leaked. The product no longer heats anymore which is an interesting fault for an iron. The iron base plate is made well. Expensive, poor… Read more

customer service, product only lasted 2 years and 3 months - major flaw with the prodcut being it no longers heats up.

Reasonable iron, excellent soleplate – I ended up with this iron after purchasing the digital sunbean iron with the same soleplate and the twin steam chamber and having gone through four replacements because they either stopped steaming, the buttons didn't work or the heat element failed, I decided that I wouldn't bother with another so I was able to exchange it for the model down… Read more

which is this iron. I have now had the Ultura 90 Resilium for over a year and it has lasted which is a positive. The soleplate is of good quality and glides quite well over materials and hasn't scratched as of yet. I was concerned this past week when it stopped heating and a whole heap of deposits came out of the holes. However once we ran the sunbeam iron cleaner through it, I am amazed to say that it is now steaming wonderfully again and working as new. So clearly one needs to include the cleaning product into a schedule, perhaps every six months or so to maintain optimum performance of the iron. Now that it is clean it is really chewing through the water, but I guess this means it is doing it's job properly and the results are much better and the ironing process is much quicker. The soleplate glides well over materials and the steam seams to work quite well. Relatively easy to clean the inside calcium deposits and also the soleplate (I had to remove some burnt on fabric after the not so helpful help from the mother-in-law who decided to iron thermal clothing which is not supposed to be ironed...) A little on the heavy side, needs regular cleaning to maintain optiumum performance. It does spit out water drops onto material on occasion, particularly when on lower heat settings. Regular refills of the water chamber required when the iron is working properly. This may be a good sign to clean the iron if the water useage drops. Possibly a little on the pricey side, I always like to get the best product that I can, and have been a little disappointed with the Sunbeam Irons. My mum's iron which was the same model, but a few years older just overheated one day and burnt a hole through my ironing board cover.

Good – This iron is great. Considering I am upgrading from a dry iron, this iron cuts my ironing time in half with impressive results. I recommend this iron! I have the model up from this (SR6800). It is great! The iron has a long lead and is not too heavy. It heats up quickly (thanks to the 2400W power). The plate sole plate does not stick to clothing… Read more

and glides over my clothes easily without resistance. The shot of steam is very handy without causing drippage - excellent for those stubborn creases! Runs out of water quickly! Needs to be refilled frequently.

Terrible – Overall, my last iron, which was a sunbeam 5??? was far superior which is what influenced me to purchase Sunbeam. Buyer beware! Long lead Very poor shot of steam drips or should I say it almost pours water onto my clothes. Not easy to fill with water and if you don’t completely flip the little cover closed, water comes out the fill hole. I don’t know, but maybe I have a lemon and should contact Sunbeam.

Excellent – Apart from the cord kinking when I stand the iron on the board, it's a great iron. I have a lot of men's cotton shirts to iron and this is the first iron that has strong enough steam action to make ironing those cotton shirts a breeze! I particularly like the way the iron beeps if I have forgotten to turn it off. It also has a large opening for… Read more

the water container - no more spilling water overflowing onto the ironing board! Love it! Great temperature control, excellent steam function, beeps if I haven't turned it off. The cord kinks a bit up close to the iron.

Good – This is a really good iron! I bought it as a replacement for another Sunbeam iron which was getting old but I had always been happy with. I find that it is just the right weight coz it's not too heavy and a lighter iron wouldn't have enough weight to get out the creases. Overall I'm glad I stuck with the Sunbeam. Heats up fast,"resilium" finish… Read more

on plate glides smoothly, easy to fill water well, handy warning alarm, 3 metre cord is a definate plus. Sometimes drops of water will come out of the water sprayer when the button hasn't been pressed and I am ironing quickly.

Good – Going from an old iron that took forever to heat up, this sunbeam 5990 is a great relief. It heats up really quickly, as claimed, and irons out the wrinkles very well. I must say though that there are some deep wrinkles that it can't get out. Not surprisingly, it has cut our ironing time and I don't groan inwardly (as much) about having to iron.… Read more

One thing my mum has complained about is that it drips when she's on the lowest setting- I don't think it's suppose to, but turning off the steam function is an easy solution.

A quick note: there are also reviews on the 5990 posted under Sunbeam 5900. Quick to heat up. Easy to use. Love the steam function- at the high setting, it puffs out steam automatically, every 2 sec or so. Kinda heavy. The warning alarm that it's been left on is just a bit too weak. Not sure about the vertical steaming function- maybe I'm not using it right.
