Expensive, heavy and awkward – BASICS: I have had this vacuum for probably 7-8 years, and have never really liked it. While the suction is very good, it is heavy, noisy, and awkward to use. I have both hardwood floors and carpet - in a 3-bedroom home. ANNOYANCES: The way you have to extend the "wand" portion is extremely inefficient and annoying to use for reaching… Read more

hard-to-clean areas that a "normal" vacuum with a nozzle-type end can (by removing all the extension parts). I had to buy another hose and attachment, because the hose bends too tightly when trying to clean in tight angles. Cleaning the vacuum is time-consuming; I find I have to clean the roller/brush frequently (I have long hair, and must shed far more than I thought!!), but I do appreciate that this keeps the vacuum in good condition, so I do it.

BOTTOM LINE: I prefer the ease of use and lightness of a canister vacuum, which are generally more reasonably priced as well. This vacuum was expensive, and I do not think it was worth it.

love, love, love!!!!!! – I've killed a lot of vacuums over the years and the DC14 is my first Dyson, I was very skeptical at first but over the years this thing has performed and more. We have 4 dogs and 3 kids and live on a main road so you can imagine why I need a good vacuum, our house is vacuumed at twice a day, the suction on this thing is beastly and I love the… Read more ·  2

fact that you can pull it apart which I have done many times to pull out kids pencils etc.

We have had this vacuum for 9 years since brand new which is the longest I have ever owned a vacuum cleaner. I think once you've owned a few crap things you learn to appreciate something fantastic which is how I see the Dyson DC14 which I purchased 9 years ago on special too...I had done my research and always knew I was going to purchase a dyson, I just didn't want to pay the price tag until I saw them on special.

Well, I am happy with the purchase and happy with the quality and performance. The only thing I have to replace at the moment is the hose but I'm happy if that's all I need to replace on it after all this time. I'm not looking to upgrade so I'll work this thing until it dies and I'm just grateful that I ended up with a good batch.

If you are looking for a vacuum I suggest doing research on the brand and just running through reviews and anyone else you know who owns one, most importantly think about how it'll fit into your lifestyle, I love the upright because I just plug it in and off I go, rip out the telescope handle for my corners and then rip that off to use just the hose to vacuum our cars but some may prefer the smaller drag along ones.

All I can say is that our Dyson has been AWESOME!!!!!!! and curse the day it retires.

best model upright dyson i have encounted – I am fortunate enough to see around 100 dyson's a year and i must say the dc14 is my favourite model. I own a few Dyson's (dc07, dc14, dc15, dc19, dc23, dc29, dc33, dc35) through what I do and the 14's are always the best. a dyson will only lose suction if you don't wash your filters properly (and keep in mind many models have 2 filters)… Read more ·  2

(excluding the hepa filters) or if a hose has a hole in it or you have a blockage.

A vacuum is like a lot of things, with a dyson if you treat it well it will be kind to you. People vacuum up anything from pens, to liquid, concrete etc and TRASH their Dyson and then say oh it doesn't work it's lost suction. in my instance I have found user error to be the main cause. or people NEVER wash their filter (only have to every 6 months) and then go oh my motor blew up, well really.......

No I don't work for Dyson, and i'm not associated with them but I know a decent vacuum when I use it.

so be kind to your dyson and it will be kind to you.

My DC 14 died today – I loved my Dyson DC 14 I bought my Dyson from Harvey Norman for the sum of $799.00 can’t tell you what year it was about 2005 so I got my moneys worth So now it’s died and so sad as looked everywhere to buy another Dyson but was shocked at the price for latest model. If they offered me a similar one I would probably buy it. Show details ·  1

Powerful and versatile - a classic – There seems to be a bit of a stigma around older Dyson models - but it's worth remembering that each one was a flagship back in its day. So it is with the DC14 - it's a fantastic vacuum if you look after it. That's an important part, and something that was mentioned by another poster. You have to care for your device in order to get the best out… Read more

of it. I've had two significant 'problems' with this machine, both of which were my own fault. Firstly - I found that it wasn't picking up. I read a few articles online that suggested a misaligned hose, and then I looked at the rollers - totally clogged with hair! Five minutes with a pair of scissors, and everything was fixed.

Secondly, the hose lost suction and made a loud hissing noise. This time, it was a clog in the U-bend at the bottom - a clothes peg had got wedged in there. Again, an easy fix.

Here's the thing: these vacuums are powerful enough to pick up almost anything, so it means that you do need to be aware of where you're using it. But the modular design means that it's so easy to sort these problems out if they do occur.

I had people advising me to get a new one, but this vacuum - which I got for almost loose change on eBay - is still going strong and I've no intention of parting with it. It's designed to last a lifetime; you just have to make sure that you give it the care that it needs.

Expensive and unworthy of high price – My one shredded all the tassels edging off my carpets, It might make a good lawn mower. They are overpriced and do not last any longer that ones 1/4 of the price. My friend works at a vac cleaner store. The brushes keep spinning so have to turn it off to save the rugs. After years of owning impressive Dysons, along came the DC14 and we never went back for any more – We have owned 3 Dyson upright vacuum cleaners. The DC01, a DC07 and we currently own a Dyson DC 14. The Dysons have all been very reliable and easy to clean internally. Like all vacuum cleaners, blockages can occur in the powerhead ducts, and the piping and tubes which lead to the dust canister. The DC01 and 07 had very good pick up of dirt… Read more

and pet hair. We wore them out over a period of years. We remain very impressed by these early Dysons.

We traded up to a Dyson DC14 a couple of years or so ago and were immediately disappointed. The machine has great suction but any upright relies upon its power head and brush roller to clean carpet.

There is something about the DC14 brush bar which renders it, in our experience virtually useless. We have very flat carpet, there is little pile depth and perhaps the brush bar is designed for thick high pile carpet.

Whatever, we were and remain very disappointed with the DC14 and have not bought a Dyson since.

In desperate times, such as when the Hoover we bought breaks down, which is once every 3 months so far, I drag the DC14 out of the shed and use the extension hose and floor tool. The suction is great, but the resistence of the hose is very tiring. Often the machine tips over. As I say, using the DC14 as an upright vacuum is a waste of electricity. There is something about the brush bar which is totally wrong – it does not clean the carpet. I have for example left floor sweepings in a pile place on carpet and run the Dyson DC14 over these piles repeatedly. By the tenth run, a reasonable person would give up. On Dyson. As the bulk of the dirt and fluff remains. With the hose and floor tool, though, gone in one go.

There is nothing that I can see that is amiss with the brush bar. It function has not changed since the day we got it. Friendly sales staff in shops have told us that the models built in Asia are inferior to the British made ones. I consider this to be total nonsense. There is something about the DC14 brushbar design which renders it useless. Perhaps the bristles are shorter in order to protect the clutch and motor from strain.

Then again, reducing stress on components parts should not be done in a manner which renders the entire device a waste of electricity nor should it be done in a way which stresses customers and turns them off the product.

Had the Dyson worked, we would not be here, sitting around for the Hoover 5110 to be returned from Godfrey’s workshop for the fourth time in 12 months.

In the beginning, there was the Massey Fergusson tractor air cleaner. Mr Dyson essentially took the idea and used it in a vacuum cleaner. Brillant. But totally useless if the canister never needs emptying Mr Dyson. It was nice knowing you. In the light of recent experiences, the next vacuum cleaner I buy will be the biggest and most powerful workshop cleaner I can source at my local hardware store or racing parts place. Domestic stuff is just too lightweight and built around slogans. Maybe I’ll build a concrete bunker for a house and hose it out once a month. I am sick of the rubbish being sold to house wives. Blokes do housework too. The girlie stuff doesn't work and it falls to bits on a monthly basis. Why do people keep these companies in business by buying their junk? Dysons are pricey. The DC14 is robust, male proof and reliable. It is consistent. The head unit does not pick up dirt and dust and fluff, we don't expect it too. If we want to waste electricity , we drag it out, turn on and watch very little fly around the cyclonic canister. Then with a sigh, we try and use the floor tool, fighting the excessive resistance in the hose. Can’t have too long can we, because it wouldn't fit in the handle when we finish. Again, a problem caused by form over function.

Don't appliance designers do housework? The slobs. Robust, high quality design and construction Brush bar is quite useless - doesnt clean carpet. Extension hose too springy and makes my bursitis worse. Machine tips over when hose extended more a few feet.

Bit of a letdown – Have had it one year and definitely wish we had of bought another type of Dyson. We have always had the pull-behind style before and they had been great. This just is a pain in the back-side. Not very versatile, or user friendly. The wife hates it... Also after 1 year it has lost quite a bit of suction, even with the regular cleaning of filters etc. Strong suction when first purchased bulky, poor attachments, poor design

Great vacuum, excellent cleaning power – This is a powerful vacuum cleaner that is easy to look after - no bags, just empty the drum straight into the bin. Disappointed – Purchased the dyson due to reputation as being the best on the market. All was well for 2 and a half years or so then has lost suction as an upright cleaner. Utilities are quite good. The attachment which allows it to act more like a 'pull along' vacuum is great for getting under beds and doesn't seem to be affected by the above mentioned issue.

Great range of supplies accessories which are easily accessible.

Uncomplicated for user, meaning simply choose hard floor or carpets. The extension hose is a little fiddly to use and it took me a while to work it out.

It is useless on many of the little objects typically found on a floor that needs vacuuming. The handle is designed for very short people. Changing fittings is a real PAIN. Useless on hard floors. which cost about $300 over 5 years; on top of buying the machine. Can I also say that I purchased the cleaner through Clive Peeters and have never had so much assistance without the hard sell and nothing was too hard for them to help me with. Once you have your head around the attachments and extra bits and pieces, it is a wizz. Not too heavy, and thoughtful things like quick release for the cord and a clip to hold the cord in place. Easy to empty and awesome cleaning - I thought I was pretty house proud until I vacuumed with this new machine! Fantastic for dog hair. It is also good on hard tile floors. The service is fantastic too - I damaged (accidently) the belt that drives the fan - they picked up the machine from my house - fixed it and delivered it back within 5 days as part of the two year warranty- very impressed.
