separately. Initially we had them both installed on a bed in the middle of the room, but after moving the bed next to the wall, we now only use one and will use the other for our younger child. Simple to use, doesn't greatly impact on changing the sheets. Can be used on slat beds or ensembles. It can be fiddly to fold down as you need to use two hands in a pincer grip, while pulling rail down so it doesn't lock back in.
