DO NOT USE! – After reading reviews on this, I can now understand why my dog became very distressed after an application. Our dog is a very very friendly, happy and loving pooch. Once given half an application (he flinched and ran away from me) his behaviour changed rapidly to becoming very distressed. He wouldn’t come near me, tail between his legs, trembling, panting. Hiding and trying to escape. He was very scared. It obviously was extremely uncomfortable for him and not only until I rubbed him down with a cold flannel did he start to relax again. I feel awful that I put something on him that caused him so much discomfort/pain. And I really can’t believe how this is still being sold even after reading so many similar experience.
Purchased in at Petstock for $70.

One of our old girls has gotten a second life from this product! – We had such a huge result with our german shepherd and decided to try it on the cats. The decision was twofold - 1) I saw such a remarkable outcome for the dog I thought I'd try it and 2) to stop the fleas that might have been irritating the dog. We have 2 cats, a pedigree and a moggy and moggy was looking every 1 of her 15yrs. Since the first application we have seen a remarkable turn around in the older cat - increased appetite, coat is shiny, brighter eyes, more spritely. We believe she has added about another 5yrs to her life now as a result. I do not apply every month but about every 2nd to 3rd month so the product last longer and it does not appear to make a difference to the animal. Treats many parasitic infestations at once Smelly, can remove nail polish, stays on coat for a while

I recently used Advocate for Dogs 10–25 kg on my 14-month-old dog, following the instructions carefully. Unfortunately, I had a poor experience. The product had an extremely strong chemical smell—so strong we could smell it from over a metre away, and it made it unpleasant to be near her. Given how sensitive dogs’ noses are, I can only assume it… Read more
was very uncomfortable for her as well.
Within an hour, a large, wet, oily patch developed at the application site. After 6 hours, the smell hadn’t faded at all, so I ended up washing the area to remove it. Thankfully, her skin didn’t show any irritation.
I contacted both the seller and the manufacturer (Elanco). The seller redirected me, and I never received a response from the manufacturer.
I won’t be using this product again.
I just heard this out-dated product (since 2004) advertised. I can see from the reviews that many pet lovers have had their pets die as a consequence of using this product. I see a reputable vet who is nearing the end of his career and as a consequence has a lot of experience - his view is that by the time that veterinary products past their… Read more
patent date, hit the shelves of Coles and Woolworths etc that they are basically useless, that the ticks and fleas have built an immunity to the product.
Frankly I would have used 'Advocate' 20 years ago when it still worked - I'm staggered that this spent/ superceded product is being advertised by what I consider to be liars capitalising on the post patent products.
See your vet - ask them.
Don't waste your money and your pet's life on Advocate.
Best Wishes Animal Lovers Be careful - don't trust scumbags.
Toxic for animals – My cat was having seizures and vomiting for days. She came up in welts and after all that she still has fleas. The vet had to give her cortisone.

Hair loss and skin injuries – First couple of time I used it I noticed hair loss where I'd applied the treatment. Cat didn't like it, but who would? Thought it was normal, though made me hesitant to keep using. Last time I used Advocate he started scratching away at the treatment site, creating a growing bald patch and lesions from where scratched through his skin. Several… Read more
hundred dollars and a month of twice daily treatments (oral medication and two topical medications), and he's finally on the mend. Very harsh treatment and ultimately trades protection against parasite for discomfort and injury. Won't be using again.
Shocked and appalled customer...previously very satisfied! – I have used this product for years on both my dogs with no issues and would have recommended it to others. Until today...one of my dogs shook shortly after application and the Advocate spray literally burned the leather from my couch and the paint from my wall! I have attached photos because it just sounds so crazy. I am really upset with the… Read more

High gloss kitchen doors ruined due to this product burning when dogs shake even when dry! – The product burns high gloss kitchen doors when the dogs shake (even days after treatment applied as instructions). Ruined kitchen! Imagine What does it do to dog skin? Very upset Show details

Cheapest online Advocate for cats – Vetsupply have the best prices by far. I have been ordering from Vetsupply for years for my cats and the service is excellent. Show details
The best I've ever used – My cat has never had a bad reaction to this stuff. He's a happy chappy afterwards. It really works for my cat and he never gets sick from it. Maybe he is an anomaly but I've had absolutely no issues with using advocate
Absolutely would use use nothing else! – I have used this on my dogs and cats for years with wonderful results. Those who are seeing negative results must have pets that are allergic to the ingredients which in no way means the product is of poor quality! I would highly recommend it. Show details

This killed our 15 year old cat within 24 hours! – We put this product on our 15 year old cat on the 31/10/2024 and she died 24 hours later when she started foaming and panting at 5pm, refused food and water, ran under our bed let out a few loud cries and died at 5.20pm…. So quick!!! We’re devastated! RIP Berry :(

Killed my chocolate Labroador – A few days after giving my 14 year old best friend Advocate, the flea issue went away, however, he became very lethargic. Unable to eat or get out of his bed. The vet reluctant to admit responsibility euthanised him. Show details

Ask yourself if its worth the risk? – I used this product on my 2 cats as directed, between their shoulder blades. One was fine and both stopped scratching within 2 days. The next day though, I noticed my female seemed lethargic and after a few more days she was off her food, drinking a lot and didnt seem to want to come inside (They both live in a large enclosure and have free access… Read more
to indoor/outdoor). This was unusual because she was very affectionate and interactive normally. By day 10 she was so lethargic she couldnt even get up and was struggling to breathe. I took her to the vet who, of course, said it wouldnt be the Advocate causing it. She had a very high temperature and x rays showed she had fluid around her lungs and in her abdomen. The official diagnosis was FIP, an airborne cat virus. There is no cure and she has to be euthanased. I find it very difficult to believe that she contracted a virus when she has been contained all her life. One day I had a healthy cat and a few days after using Advocate she is dead......coincidence? I think not. Im just so grateful the other one is ok but will NEVER put poison on my animals again!
Cat has become uncoordinated and lethargic both times – First time I used it, I was advised cats can get tired after use. She was slightly disoriented, but I followed vet advice and she recovered in about 24 hours. Second use, same thing. Third use, she's got weakness in back legs, disorientation, hid under the bathroom cupboard all night and is stumbling/weak today. Taking her to vet. She's clearly… Read more
getting worse each use and I'm horrified that this is being passed off as "normal". She's not licking it, she's not ingesting it. She's terrified when she sees the tubes. Never again.
Cat constantly scratching and grooming – My cat is over grooming and scratching himself like crazy to the point where his skin is bleeding. I thought he would react better on Advocate, as another brand made him sick, but it seems like spot on treatments like this is just not for him. Show details
Doesn’t work – I have treated my dog twice this month with this product , and I am still finding fleas. Also treated my cat and she has a big scab where the solution has burnt her skin and fur Show details
Completely ineffective, Id rate it zero – This product has zero effect on fleas in my experience. Looking online it appears that fleas develop immunity to pesticides quite quickly and older generation products like advocate stop working. This product hasn’t worked for some years (at least in Auckland NZ) but they keep selling it. Perhaps it would work on some isolated flea populations… Read more
(hence some +ve reviews), but not worth wasting your money. Try a more modern flea treatment like Bravecto
Sick Cat – Our big Tonkinese cat has been vomiting, lethargic and off his food for 24 hours, not him self at all. If I had have known this could do this I would have never purchased it. Thumbs down for us. Show details
Poisoned my cat – My 9 month old kitten was poisoned by this! I didn't even give him a full dose, he is 2.5kg. do not use this product. Within a day of using it he was lethargic, couldn't walk, not eating or using the litter. Show details

Not safe for kitten use – Advocate Kitten = Not safe for kittens First things first, I'm a cat owner, I know where and how to apply this product and it seriously ticks me off that when I called the customer care line (on box 1800 678 368) the company didn't take my concern to heart and instead I was lectured about application, "you didn't apply the product properly".… Read more
Insulting and patronizing.
Facts:
Adopted a RSPCA kitten through petbarn/RSPCA adopt-a-pet program. In the petbarn adoption starter kitten pack I received it had a bunch of kitten sample packs including one month revolution kitten and one month Advocate kitten (& small cats up to 4kg).
Used revolution first, no issue.
Used the Advocate this month and it was obvious this was not safe for my kitten. Unlike the revolution product this Advocate product had stronger fumes which irritated the kitten right away (lots of blinking). Worse it did not stick to the single application spot, the product soaked the kitten's entire neck! It just kept running over his skin saturating his entire neck. It didn't show any signs it was drying at all, the one application ended up forming a wide collar of wet fur. This agitated him more. It also spread to areas he could now reach/lick. This irritation triggered over grooming and scratching. Since it didn't dry at all it got onto his paws when he tried to scratch/groom the product off so his paws got soaked too which triggered him to lick those as well. He was frantically licking this stuff within 2mins of application, that's how fast it moved through his fine kitten fur.
This caused a mild poisoning issue which escalated fast.
I rinsed the product off ASAP with warm soapy (kitten shampoo) water twice to get this product out but he still got lethargic and unwell (symptoms arose around the 1hr mark of giving him this product, heavy panting and salivating.) I rushed him to the vet who gave him charcoal to settle his tummy. Luckily 24hrs after this fiasco he is fine again but has runny poos (to be expected) and still scratches his neck area (vet told me to wash him again with a sensitive kitten shampoo and rub a little coconut oil into the application spot.)
Needless to say I'm devastated (you think you are doing the right thing using these products but it backfires and harms the pet instead) and mad that the only response from this company was a lecture on how to apply the product properly. They didn't listen at all.
For a 2kg kitten this is not a safe product.
Since I know revolution works that is the product I'll be buying. Advocate kitten is not safe to use on kittens! I'm telling everyone who will listen. This.Is.Not.Safe!!
Gave my dog bad reaction!!! – Horrendous, never again will I use this on my dog. She became very distressed, would not settle and was clearly in pain! I would advise anyone to avoid at all costs!m, I don't understand how this can be sold! Show details
Does not work – My lurcher puppy was on this for 2 months and I noticed he wasn’t quite right. Turned out he had ear mites and worms! Did not work at all. They changed him onto different tablets and they worked immediately. Would not recommend
Terrible stuff – Terrible stuff, treated my two cats with advocate 4kg and they have been sick ever since, very aggressive snarling,I will be throwing the other 4 viles in the bin.disgraceful product shouldn’t be sold.
Very effective for fleas and flea allergy dermatitis – I once used Frontline which was satisfactory for fleas but the dog suffered persistent dermatitis around the top of the tail. Several years ago I switched to Advocate, just to try it, and the dermatitis disappeared within a week, never to return. It has also kept my dog free of fleas and other bugs. My dog does not like getting it but there have been no side effects at all. Show details
Advocate Should Be Banned! – My tiny yorkie 19 weeks old 1.6kg experienced episodes of seizures, tremors, spaced out/disorientation, salvation, and vomiting. Absolutely broke my heart to see.... Vets bill was £1000.00 They checked for liver problem...(All bloods were normal) I knew it was ADVACATE as the 1st use a month ago was when it had started. The 2nd use was the same… Read more

Smells disgusting! – After a few hours of using my dog smells disgusting where I squeezed the Advocate on his neck. Says you should’t wash dog for 48hours but it smells so bad you have to. For this reason I will not buy it again. Show details
What is the stench – One star! The review wont let me post unless i put a higher star but its defintely one star.
