Black Rat Mega Grunt 12V Air Compressor
1 review
The Black Rat is no white mouse – G’day, So I purchased the Black Rat twin air compressor out of need for a 12v air compressor that was rated to operate at 150psi. With so many brands and types available I chose this particular one because of great value, compact size, high performance claim and its very handy carry bag. I certainly wasn’t disappointed by my purchase, as you’ll see in the attached video.
The Black Rat is nice and light, it weighs next to nothing. Sitting it on the the front of my (running) engine, the rubber feet on the compressor provide great stability and there’s virtually no vibration from the compressor while operating.
To put it to the ultimate test, I ran it right up to its 150psi claim, in order to allow the air suspension to rise majestically in my Range Rover (Unfortunately I had a failed factory air compressor in my 4wd on the first day of a 3 week remote 4wd trip which made the purchase of the Black Rat a necessity rather than a luxury). The Black Rat not only performed flawlessly, it also pumped my 10 litre air tank up very quickly. Impressed, indeed!
The unit does get hot, along with the air hose (provided) after sustained use, however, it does cool down rather quickly.
Do I have any gripes? Yes.
The nitto fitting from the air compressor is a male connection. This isn’t a fault or defect, I presume they’ve made it this way to prevent people using other hoses on the compressor. Traditionally the fitting from a compressor is a female. This was no major problem, as much as just a pain.
I also dislike the connection (the part that you attach to the valve on your tyres). The screw-on nature means you lose air when connecting and disconnecting the air hose to whatever you are inflating.
This aside, I believe it to be great value and an outstanding performer. Definitely worth the outlay if you’re into 4wding and regularly inflate/deflate your tyres, or require the available 150psi.
4 stars out of 5.
