I turned the printer off when it was printing too many copies. Now the 'Error' light is flashing when I want to do more printing and it won't print. What can I do?

thanks05

Not sure if this would work. What about disconnecting the printer in your computer Settings and reconnecting it?

yes, turn the power off and pull the jammed paper out of the hl-2142 laser so that the printer would function again.

how to increase print size, please?

thanks05
thanks05

You can increase print size if your software gives you the option, (i.e., input a number greater than 100 under "Scale"), otherwise you may not be able to.

can you print on cardboard?

Scenery73
Scenery73

Depends on the dimensions / thickness etc. Thin stuff that is no bigger than A4 should work. Otherwise, just print on paper and glue it to your cardboard. Please refer to the product manual which you can find by typing "Brother HL-2142 pdf" into Google. Good luck!

thanks05
thanks05

Usually not. But if the cardboard is thin and easily bent, the printer could still roll it out.

My Brother printer HL-2142 started making a loud banging noise after I replaced the cartridge (with a non-Brother cartridge). Then I replaced it again with a genuine Brother cartridge. Still the loud banging noise and 'Error' light. It won't print. Any help?

thanks05
thanks05

Sorry, I do not know the answer. I have replaced my toner with a genuine Brother cartridge maybe 3-4x already and the printer always functioned normally afterwards.

Scenery73
Scenery73

Check that you have installed the cartridge properly in the cartridge casing and that you have inserted the whole cartridge and casing into the printer properly. Try to find a diagram on the brother website for any of the HL-2 series printers. BTW, this is not a product support page. It's really only for questions to determine whether the product is good to buy or not. Try some other site like Whirlpool or on the actual company support page. That will always be better than asking on here. Good luck!

how to remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly to clear a paper jam?

Scenery73
Scenery73

Just pop the top and pull the drum out. If you are still not sure, do a search on YouTube to see how they do it. Many of the Brother models are very similar so it doesn't have to be the same model. This would be the easiest way, rather than me trying to explain in words. Good luck!

Trouble shooting advice. In the middle of printing my paper stuck on the roller and I can't get it out. All lights are flashing.

How do I fix a paper jam?

Scenery73
Scenery73

I would refer to the user manual if you have a copy or just do a google search with the model number, brand and "paper jam" and you should be able to find some info for it or the closest model to it but in my experience, I would just take the paper tray out and gently but firmly pull any stuck pieces of paper out of the machine. If there are any pieces stuck coming out the top, do the same. That should do the trick! Try printing again.

Hi Margram, When you get a paper jam, you need to pull down the front on printer, then disassemble/ pull out the toner drum and cartridge, then open the back cover and only then if you need to pull on the paper to remove the jam. Don't pull on the paper as it might tear and the stuck part may jam the rollers. Try to use fresh new paper each time you use the printer, if it has been sitting unused for some time the paper picks up moisture from the environment and this can cause a paper jam. Try to keep a good flat dry supply of paper in a dry place. If you live in a damp environment/ area this may be a little difficult. NEVER PULL PAPER BACKWARDS OUT OF A PRINTER. Good luck Moreton.

rba

As mentioned, turn it off, remove the toner cartridge and then you should be able to grab the jammed paper and pull it out slowly but firmly. I've never had it tear. I find the HL-2142 is prone to jamming if you send a print job to it before turning it on, so I always turn it on first - just 15 secs or so makes a difference.

Am I correct in thinking that the Brother HL 2142 wont print CD Labels and I need to change it to get a printer that will? Prue

Scenery73
Scenery73

The HL-2140* cannot print on CDs but you can print on sticky labels (for CD/DVDs) from Officeworks. The labels work with templates already installed in Microsoft Office. It comes with a guide to lead you through the set up of the labels.

*Your HL-2142 is basically the same as HL-2140

Hi Heazlewood, you will not be able to print on CD's/ DVD's with the Brother, it is mainly just for black and white use, home or office use. You will need a special printer to do directly to CD's. You can print onto sticky labels but trying to get them centred on the CD is another job for good eyes and a steady hand. Good luck. Peter

My brother HL-2142 printer has a flashing red error . It happened after I tried to pull out the last page as it was printing.

Ive tried turning it on and off and opening and closing all covers. all the lights come on when you turn it on but then after a second only the error light flashes.

How do I fix this please can someone advise ?? Thank You

Scenery73
Scenery73

Hi Viv, Thank you for your question. That sounds tricky. I haven't had this kind of problem but I would guess that some paper is still stuck inside the machine between the paper tray and the print output slot. I would look at your manual to see how to open the machine and check for paper. If this doesn't help I would advise you to go to the Brother website and contact their customer support. Even if it is out of warrantee, they should offer a solution to the problem. Or if you want to save time, try cutting and pasting "brother HL-2142 printer flash red error" into google for a solution from other users. Good luck! Regards, Andrew

Hi Viv, As Scenery73 has said, you may have upset the sensors inside the printer, one of the worst things one can try to do is pull/force out a paper jam, the red light blinking is a sure sign something major is wrong/ happened. Red light stays blinking on, after warm up my be Toner drum error, so will need to check how many pages you have printed since you did tone toner drum. Switch off machine and dismantle / open up all the flaps hatches and take out toner drum and shake and do the wire along the drum and replace all the bits and start up again and see how you go.

Infrequent use of your printer, try to keep paper out of moist/ damp conditions where possible, the recent wet weather in some areas causes paper to soak up moisture and then jam in your printer. Good luck Viv. Moreton.

What is the difference between the HL-2140 and HL-2142?

Scenery73
Scenery73

I don't know but there is very little difference between models at the low price range. You would have to do an online search or contact the manufacturer. However, in my view, unless you are looking for a particular feature, all these printers are cheap, robust and print in black and white. You may not need to know the difference, depending on what you are after. Good luck!

Thank you for your answer. The reason I asked is I have just received an OEM Brother HL-2140-2142 (Lanier Sp1210n) and was curious and hopeful this replacement might be a slight improvement. After installing and using it, it all looks identical except of course different software and driver came with it, and it is branded on box and printer with Lanier.

rba

As far as I know the HL-2142 is a special model sold exclusively through Officeworks. It seems to be identical to the 2140 apart from some cosmetic differences. I suspect this is to bypass Officeworks price matching policy - they will only price match the identical model sold by another store.

As rba states model nos are very similar, all use the same drivers and toners, so not much difference only the price or supplier.Good luck, mine is still going strong.
