Garmin RV 775 MT-S
VerifiedMPN: RV775MT-S3 reviews
Don't trust it. Having spent over 40 years as an exploration geologist I have used GPS almost since its inception and have had a good experience with Garmin products. We had a much earlier in-car navigator (Garmin Nuvi 500) which was brilliant. The upgrade to the RV 775 has destroyed my faith in Garmin. We bought this three years ago prior to a three month trip through outback areas and, in summary - you just can't trust it to get you to the right place and certainly not by the best route, either in the city or country. Updating software and maps doesn't appear to help. Some directions send you several kilometres in the wrong direction, then do a U turn and return past your start point. When in caravan mode, it flags warnings e.g. low bridge or load limits, that are on side streets and not affecting your route at all. I suspect the navigation data relies on StreetView to recognise such warnings and some place names. (e.g. Some places are indicated to be where there is a large billboard advertising the town's pub many kilometres ahead.)
The menu is not logical and if you simply want to go to a town (i.e. not an address) you need six additional clicks to get to select Towns. It doesn't matter if you have a nice clear screen, if it isn't reliable it is worse than useless.
Purchased in at Johnny Appleseed GPS for $398.
Unreliable – I purchased this GPS for an upcoming road trip to Queensland. I installed it and it worked ok for few weeks but then it stopped working and displayed a message map data not available, I tried all the suggested solutions and nothing worked. I returned the GPS to the supplier who replaced it. The replacement had the same fault from the beginning so I returned it for refund. Can anyone suggest a reliable GPS?
Purchased in for $399.
Won't Get You There – This sounded like the ultimate unit what with having all these great features. I bought it so we could avoid low bridges, etc when towing the van. My biggest gripe is it takes you to the wrong place nine times out of ten. In some cases it was hundreds of kilometres out. Even if it does go the right destination it takes the longest route possible, at times 30 minutes longer route. I have been very disappointed in this unit and have had to resort to using Google Maps because even though the GPS said we were at our destination we were not even close. If the navigation worked properly it would be a perfect unit but the fact it can't do the most important function correctly means I cannot recommend this unit to anyone.
