LG RC689D GOOD MACHINE – I've had the LG RC689D for ten years. It took 8 years to start causing problems. I would buy this machine again if I found it brand new. My model was bought in 2012. It produces good digital picture on the dvd part! Vcr picture quality is reasonable. Take care Show details

disappointed – This machine was brilliant upon first purchase until an update. Then slowly more and more aspects changed or did not work. Now the reason I bought this Player( to be able to copy favourite TV shows to DVD-RW so that can watch them at a decent hour) has also stopped working. It will not recognise DVDs that previously worked or new ones. Show details
LG AND LACK OF SERVICE – LG are as much help as an ashtray on a motor bike when it comes to service. They do not return calls and do not want to know when one has a problem. Their call centre is either in India or Philippines and trying to get someone at LG Australia is like trying to get blood out of a stone. USELESS....
What the hell – Was working well for past 3 years allowed it to do a software update now refuses to respond to remote commands What the hell? Have heaps of LG products now this us the first one to go south. Disappointing cant reset the machine the update has stuffed a reliable machine

Not happy! – I foolishly bought 2 of these units. Sadly all too late I find out they don't record from TV onto video tape. Useless to me... All I wanted was a simple unit... It took me a long time to save the money to buy these units, and I reckon I'll be kicking myself for even longer... Silly, Stupid woman I am.
Does the job that I bought it for – I bought the unit to play DVDs and to dub VHS tapes onto DVD. I found it difficult to operate and the manual wasn't much help. Luckily, I discovered this site before I got too frustrated and found that comments by other users solved my problems such as rewinding tapes, dubbing to DVD and finalizing a DVD-R. I now find the dubbing process easy.
Works great on my TV but wont play in any other device – I have had my RC689D for approx 1 year. No problems at all. I get flickering of the videos but that is to be expected as they are old. I am in the process of dubbing family videos. It is working perfect on my TV but it won't play on any other device. Wierd!!!!! It says no disc!!!!! Could this be the format that is used that doesn't allow… Read more
recognition on other devices?
Dont forget - if the plastic tab is missing from your video's - it will not allow recording. (safety feature used so accidental recording doesn't copy over your original) I pop a piece of tape over so they can be recorded.
pretty good vcr and dvd combination – I bought a lifes good: lg for short digital video disc and video cassette combination electronic aplliance from bing lee in carlingford court and found the dvd and vcr combo to be good and used to use it to boost the television signal until they changed it to freeview digital channels / it's still going to this day and I still sometimes use it to… Read more · 1
play a video cassette though I usually use to watch a dvd show or movie / I totally recommend this lg dvd combination to anyone who hasn't or not interested in moving to using the newer blu ray player systems with the blu ray discs plus the remote control is simple and easy to use

Know better, choose better.
DVD vcr RD689D fault will not initialize dvd disc says disc uncompatible – I have a lot of LG products and all of them have failed at some time of their life but I never learn. My vcr failed my plasma tv failed my washing machine failed (main board fault)replace free of charge my 18 month old recorder failed. Every appliance from LG has failed just after the warranty finished your stuff is shit.
LG RC689D DVD RECORDER VIDEO COMBO – Purchased this unit in November 2012 with and extended warranty which turned out to be a very good idea. I have only use this unit as a DVD Recorded and it has gotten plenty of use as I usually watch one show and record another to disc. The unit operated well at the start then it would not recognise a disc I had recorded onto and promptly tell me… Read more
to reinitialise it. I found that after that it would work for a short time and then do the same thing again. I put up with this as I figured the discs I were using might have been overused as they had been is use since I bought the unit. The PC did not recognise the disc as having anything on it in fact it did not recognise it at all. I did not finalise it as I just watch and reuse them just like I used too with the video recorder.
On 1 April I watched a disc I had recorded onto, set the unit up to record couple of shows overnight and left it doing so when I went to bed. The next night I switched on the unit to watch what I had recorded and all it would do was bring up the LG logo on the TV Screen. The word HELLO was frozen in time in the area that normally shows the time or amount of time left on the show you are watching and that was it. Nothing would make it play not even resetting it. NO TV channels came up either. I checked all the leads etc too.The LG people say I'll have to take it to a repair man for assessment.
Thankfully I have an extended warranty I bought with the unit so they will take care of the assessment and whether repair or replace/give me a credit so I can buy something else.
I never used the Video section of the unit and from the reviews I've read here I'm glad I haven't. My advice is to get an extended warranty if you buy this unit, if LG fixes the problems it would be a good unit but unfortunately they make things to throw away nowadays. Was good at recording till it died. I did fail to recognise discs after a whiel and you had to reinitialise them. If you'd recorded somethign n the disc you really wanted to see you couldn't watch it as nothing else would recognise that there was anything there.
Very Frustrating – I bought one and it played VCR's for about half a day and then abruptly seemed to lose the plot with tracking and the screen was 100% snow. This happened even to the ones that were playing perfectly about 5 mins before it went beserk. I took it back to the Good Guys and got another one and it does exactly the same thing!! It seems to get upset… Read more
whenever you fast forward or rewind. If you slow search it will play again but a fast forward or rewind seems to stuff up the tracking. Bizarrely it seems that if you let it "rest" overnight it will play the same VCR's with better results (but far from perfect) but if you let them run for another 15mins or so they come good. Ridiculous. Nothing It's cheap unreliable rubbish
DVD recorder/VCR player combi RC689D – Waste of money to buy this product. Unit start palying up from the day1, firts I lost the function of Disc formatting, then start getting different messages each time, I never knew when it will record the required program. At the end (1week after warranty ended) it started to "read"a disc (fo 5-10 minutes), just to tell me that there is a wrong… Read more
disc. Then HDMi service is not available. I wonder why was I so stupid to pay over $300.00 for this unit! Will never buy LG product again, because even the service leaves a lot to desire. Now I know that I am not the only one left out of pocket and useless product. before purchasing: everything. After minimal use (2-3 times) Disc Settings became unavaliable, then recording start playing up, next (1 week after warranty run out ) could not view or record on any disc. Service support is non existent!! I did spend lot of money (over $300.00) on a lemon! Will never buy LG product again.
Poor Quality – My parents bought the LG DVD Recorder VHS Player Combo Model RC689D. This machine is nothing but trouble and a great disappointment. When a video cassette is played on the machine a loud static noise. The picture flicks constantly and the picture quality is unbelievably poor. We took the machine back to Bing Lee and they tested it and said there… Read more
was nothing wrong. It was sent to an electronics repairer and he replaced the video mechanism, but this didn't make any different. On the advice of LG, a sound recording was made of the noise and sent to them. Funny enough, LG contacted us and said they would be in touch and then never heard a word from them again. When we tried contacting LG to follow this up, we were continually told that someone would ring us back and again we never heard back from them. This machine is a dud. I highly recommend steering clear of this machine. It is a disappointment and of poor quality. The customer service from both Bing Lee and LG has been pathetic. Nothing Loud static noise and poor picture quality

Does not play PAL vcr tapes even commercially produced ones properly – I purchased this machine recently and was very disappointed with the way it played vcr tapes. On all tapes the picture flickers and the tracking function does nothing to control this problem. The sound and picture quality is poor as well when it stops flickering for a second. How can you dub vcr tapes to Dvd when you can't even get the tapes to… Read more

Seems some functionality is missing – Whilst there is much to like about this unit, there are some very disappointing features. I assume "vcR" stands for "video cassette recorder", however the RC689D only records to dvd. It plays vhs tapes satisfactorally, but won't record to them. As well, the only way to rewind a tape (unless I've missed something) is via the "search back" feature,… Read more
which is notoriously slow. I was also disappointed that the tuner is able to recognize HD channels, but is unable to decode them. Is this "planned obsolescence" ? It is about the only unit on the market at the moment that will even read a vhs tape, and the ability to preserve them by copying to dvd is appreciated.
Further, despite the fact that the owner's guide suggests that dvd;s produced on this unit can be… Read more (+10 replies)
