Good value for money, perfect for movie nights in – I am making this review 7 years after buying mine and have to say it has lasted well and never had any problems. Although it comes with an ipod docking station we never really used it. Sound is really good for the price and has been great for movie nights with family and friends. The biggest down is the Blu Ray player can be slow when turning on.
- Date Purchased:
After sales service is abysmal – 13 months after purchase the blu ray/Amplifier broke down. At the time the sony website stated that blu rays had a warranty of 3 years, when we tried to claim warranty we were told that was a mistake on the website and the website would be updated to 1 year. We argued that it was 1 year at the time of purchase and irrespective of the product warranty it should be covered under statutory warranty as it is only 13 months old, eventually after several phone calls and arguments, it was agreed to fix the blu-ray/amp, again the returns process was difficult. We received the blu-ray/amplifier back weeks later with a note saying it was fixed. It never worked, not even for one day. Again several emails and phone calls to Sony and the outcome is: our only option at this point is to buy a whole new system at a "reduced" cost of $915. My inlaws also bought the same products and five months later they are without a TV and experiencing an extreme amount of stress and difficulty dealing with Sony. Needless to say I will never buy another Sony product, which is a shame as the products look very nice and if they lasted they would be great. However, personally I can't afford to pay $914 every 13 months to upgrade my home theatre system. features doesn't last
Good quality sound for mid priced unit – Mid priced system with good features and sound quality. Easy to set up and program, although internet brower feature is clumsy without a keyboard. Modern design and blends into room well. Sound quality for price, speakers have neat sturdy stands, wireless rear speakers Cheap quality cables, electronic touch controls on unit....I dont trust this to continue working long term.

I have recently bought the BDV-E980W and I was not satisfied with the sound quality. The high frequencies are absent. So I used a flashlight in order to see how many speakers the front columns have. I found out that there are two speakers, a small one in the upper part and a bigger one in the middle. In the bottom you can find a kind of a bass reflex hole.
The thing is that the top speaker does not produce any sound at all. I suppose it is meant to produce the high frequencies (twitter). I went to a Sony service and they told me that the top speaker does not exist. After insisting to check it they told me that it might be a fake (!!!) one, put there for no reason (!!!).
Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Do you find the frequency range satisfactory? The front columns are supposed to be two way and the middle positioned speaker does not seem to be a two way speaker. So, what does the top speaker do? Is it a fake one or a defective one. I am waiting for an official answer from the headquarters of Sony.
I have bought 3 home cinemas (5.1) in the past and all of them had clear treble sound. BDV-E980W does not. Is it supposed to be like that or does the top speaker not work.
Can anyone help me out?
