we had an apparent electrical surge in our house that caused the circuit breakers to go off. Once power was restored the Sony TV would not restart. Instead of coming on as usual a red light flashes at the bottom on the front. What is the potential problem?

I have the same bright light down the left side of mine, getting wider towards the bottom of the screen. I understand it's called backlight bleed. Sony say it's "within specification." They're sending a tech but have indicated they'll charge if there's NFF (no fault found). My LG sure doesn't have this issue and the "within specification" response is Sony's stock response (according to some forums)....are you going to push the issue with them? The threat of a charge for looking at it is a deterrent but it seems like they're sending out a dodgy product. The sample at the store sure didn't have backlight bleed.

If your unit is under warranty and you can see the problem, offer to send them photo's of the issue and demand it be serviced. It is not good enough for Sony's Service team to threaten you with a charge for a poor quality screen. If you can place this TV next to another one and can prove that there is something wrong with the screen there should be no charge for a repair. Dept. of Fair Trading would assist you with this. As I went through none of the threats to charge me, I would think this model TV has had many problems with the screen that has been installed - Probably a cost cutting measure. I am thinking of selling mine now as the smudge and screen brightness fault has not been fixed, but rather moved to a different place on the screen. Back to an LG for me!!!
