The best blu-ray player for your home – I purchased this so I could play heaps of DVDs/Blu-Rays on my 4K TV that I make myself. Show details · 1
Ok for me with two flaws - and after a third one now dumped – Works fine when it works however there are two issues: Some older DVDs cannot be played as there is no ‘cursor’ generated, I.e. you cannot proceed past the initial language selection as there is no way to select any language. This affects Discs that are from about 20 years ago (yes I have a large library) Netflix has stopped working and no matter… Read more
what I tried, doesn’t load any program more than 25% and then stops. Lately it developed an issue where it simply froze on longer UHD titles around the 2:15hrs mark. Not every time but often enough to make you look at the clock every time it approached that point, wondering if it will freeze or not. Definitely not the way you want to watch a movie especially when you have guests around.
Very poor from a company that should know better – I had the x700 for more than two years. The player always froze if a film started approaching the 2 hour mark, and i'd have to stop and play again for it to resume. Every time i raised this with support, i would get told the next firmware update would fix it. After 4 updates there was still no fix and my warranty had well and truly run out. I know… Read more
of many others having the same issue with Sony 4k players. I have another brand of player in another room which has never given me any grief, so i know it's not the discs. I finally got fed up this week and replaced it with that other reliable brand. Stay away from Sony players.
Hasn’t worked properly since I got it – Has been used about 6 times/6 movies. Covid hit back in 2020 and the warranty has ran out since. It just won’t recognise the disc, looks new and everything else works. But I’d avoid this one like the plague. So annoying and frustrating, everything looks good. All options seem to work except the main thing I got it for - playing 4K movies…. Arghhh. The money I paid is now a donation to Sony.
It could disappoint, cumbersome, not user friendly – This is my review for Sony ULTRA HD BLU-RAY/DVD Player, model UBP-X700. This is the Australian released version also known as (Sony AU2, UBP-X700/BM). I purchased this player in April of 2021 from Dick Smith online. A direct connection to my FHD smart tv was fine. Issue 1: I experienced some initial issues with connecting this Sony 4k player… Read more
directly to my Pioneer Audio Visual Receiver: I have a Pioneer AV Receiver with a 4k pass through. This Sony player would not recognise the the AV Receiver. This created some initial issues, like incompatibility with screen resolution so while the player was connected via the AV Receiver, the player would cause the tv set turn black, no picture. I had to Reset the Output Video Resolution using the Sony player and remote control. After doing this I could see a picture on my tv. Initially the picture was displayed on the screen, but the resolution was stuck on 480p.
I've placed a 4k blu ray disc in this sony player and it will only let me watch this in 480p. Playing a Bluray disc at that resolution setting was unacceptable as it appeared very blurred.
When I attempt to change the output video resolution setting from 480p to 720p or higher, the tv screen goes black and stays black. I had to do the reset procedure all over again.
The above issue appears to have been caused by the HDCP incompatibility while connecting with HDMI with my Pioneer AV Receiver.
Solution: I purchased and connected a Pro2 HDCP2214V2 converter.
This is a small electronic adaptor device which down converts HDCP2.2 to play HDCP1.4 HDMI devices.
Connecting the Pro2 with this Sony player and my AV Receiver was successful because it allowed the tv and Sony 4k player setting to change to higher resolution eg 720p, 1080p etc.
Or the other option is to connect this Sony 4k player directly to the tv set. ( Which meant the AV Receiver would not be used as intended and unusable for the most part).
Issue 2: When inserting a shop bought 'DVD' disc into this Sony player UBP-X700, the tv screen displays a message, "Player prohibited by region code". So this player wouldn't play any discs locked to other regions.
It appears my 'DVD' discs aren't compatible with this model. I did not know that 'DVD' discs locked to other Regions would not play in this UBP-X700.
I very recently contacted an Authorised Sony Service Centre in regional Victoria. They advised that they "currently have no unlock procedure for any Sony Bluray or DVD players. All are region locked to the area in which they are sold." "Customer Support Representative Sony Australia responded...Sony doesn't have multi region Blu-ray players and 4K UHD players.
There might be other retailers who are selling Sony Blu-ray players "region code free" on Amazon. These Sony Blu-ray players are modified or altered. These players are not originally designed for that so their customers had been reporting playback issues.
• So none of the current models of SONY disc, DVD Blu ray players support DVD nor Blu-ray discs locked to other regions !
This is unacceptable from Sony because even my previous older standard Sony bluray player had the DVD region unlocked. Sony should provide a solution to unlock this 4k player so at least we can watch DVD movies. Sony Australia, you already know that thousands of people have been purchasing DVD discs locked to other Regions during these last 20 years so you're making it difficult for people not allowing us to play our DVDs.
Printed on all sides of the box, packaging of this Sony player it actually says "DVD Player". There was no prior information online nor on the packaging of this player model to advise buyers that Sony Australia no longer supports 'DVD' discs locked to other regions - This is unacceptable from Sony since this model is also marketed as a "DVD Player".
If you want to watch DVD or Blu-ray discs locked to other Regions this Sony UBP-X700 would not be suitable for you. Best you get some other model with a factory made, approved, Multi Region player.
So I can't watch any of my 'DVD' discs locked to other Regions with this Sony UBP-X700. Sony, you know that people use AV Receivers but using this Sony UBP-X700, to do a simple successful connection in high resolution is far too much stuffing around and by the stage I completed a successful connection I had to spend more money to purchase a Pro2 converter. In the end this Sony UBP-X700 doesn't accept my 'DVD' discs locked to other Regions anyway. Purchasing this Sony 4k player could disappoint you. The above issues are very disappointing from a premium brand like Sony.
Even though this is a 4k blu ray player, in some ways Sony have gone backwards in making this Sony UBP-X700 user friendly - it is not user friendly. (Compared to other players, there is current advertising of other brands from Kogan for a new DVD player which is multi region/unlocked for $25, Lenoxx Compact Multi-Region DVD Player with USB DVD3460). The LASER blu-ray player (1080p) model BLU-BD4000 is a better alternative for unlocking and playing DVD and Blu-ray discs. So it is definitely unacceptable having this Sony UBP-X700 player Region locked.
Does anyone out there know if there are any 4k Bluray players which accept 'DVD' discs from other Regions ? ( Without so much stuffing around )
The Worst – Purchased 18 months ago and it’s now a total paperweight and nothing else and the support from Sony Australia is almost nothing, ie; turn it off and unplug or a software update but when you can’t select any of the setting menus can’t reset anything it’s hard to do anything and now Sony tells me they have reviewed it and they can no longer help me… Read more
but have offered me a 30% discount on another one from the same category as they cannot fix it which is another stay away from this sony player

Player constantly freezes – I bought the Sony UBP-X700 because I have a 4K TV and I wanted to start adding 4K Blu-ray discs to my collection. The player would not play Kill Bill (either movie), it would crash when it got to the title screen and I would have to unplug the machine from power to reset it. It would not play 4K Lego Batman at all. There were a bunch of other 4K… Read more
movies that the player would crash half way through the movie and I wouldn't be able to watch the end. I Googled "Sony UBP-X700 freezing issue" and I discovered that this seems to be a common issue with the Sony 4K Blu-ray players. So after about two weeks of disappointment I returned the player and swapped it for an the LG 4K Dolby Vision Blu-ray player instead. The LG has played all the discs fine that the Sony wouldn't.
I bought this after the TCL 4K TV – This has played every CD/DVD I have thrown at it, A compact player worth every penny, no problem with the remote on this model, easy to connect to TV and internet via Wi-Fi, and your ready for business. I buy Blu Ray discs where I can pending on the cost, I try to get them om special Show details
4k IS AMAZING – I bought this with Passengers, 4k bluray. It looks amazing. The sound and the picture are both superb. I tried Netflix and the picture is too dark. I don't know if its a setting or not but certainly from disc the picture is excellent. I tried to stream my 4k videos from my PC in the study but they constantly buffer. streaming 1080 videos are… Read more
fine, about 20gig files seems to be the limit before the bit rate is too high. The unit only has a 10/100 network so i think this is the issue. the files play fine when playing from the xbox so i know this is a limitation on the Sony unit.
So for playing blurays its great. i removed a star for the netflix and streaming limitation.
