Installed 18/9/2017, died 6/9/2021 – Removed the flow restrictor from the showerhead and it worked well for almost 4 years. Now it's only running lukewarm water. Stiebel confirmed the unit is out of warranty and discontinued and pointed me in the direction of their preferred plumber. Plumber only does warranty work so can't fix hws and besides, there are no parts for this… Read more

discontinued product. Choices are to change to a Wilson or another, more expensive Stiebel with 5 year warranty. What a joke. How are these companies allowed to operate? I'll give consumer affairs a try.

No longer available for good reason – The unit was fitted to a commercial unit which I bought new. I have barely used it but it is over 2 years old now. Like everyone else here, the water comes out boiling hot, but as soon as you add cold water, the flow drops enough to shut the heater off. It has been like this since day 1, but I was too busy to do anything about it and very rarely… Read more

even used the hot water. This makes the unit useless. I wonder if Australian consumer protection applies due to this unit not being fit for purpose?

RENTERS STUCK WITH THIS ABOMINATION – Like others have stated here, there is no way of moderating temperature. We either get lava like hot water or plain old cold water. I raised the issue with the electrician (who installed it only back in May 2020) who then contacted Stiebel Eltron. They sent a very helpful and lovely technician but there was very little that he could do. Only way to prevent the system shutting off is to have another tap running hot water while having a shower!

Upgrade your unit. Don't put one of these in – I'm a plumber and have installed 6 of these units in the past. I always remove the restrictors in showers as they are usually a problem. Out of the 6 units installed, the last 2 of them have been nothing but trouble. One of them was my next-door neighbors and would cut in and out and then eventually just no hot water at all. The problems started… Read more

after the first year. Stiebel came out twice, the first time they made up some excuses and said there wasn't anything wrong with it, just open the tap more. The lady continued to have problems and let me know when It was close to the warranty expiring. I hassled them until they came back out and they eventually changed over an internal part and it has been working fine ever since. It really seemed they were trying to avoid having the unit under warranty though on the last call out.

The second unit was fine for about a year also and then started having problems when the owner put a new shower head in. The owner got Stiebel out, they took out the restrictor, but it was still not working right and they gave a whole bunch of reasons why, but no clear way of fixing it. Most of what was said was really just a bunch of mumbo jumbo to confuse the client. One of the things they said was that this model cant regulate temperature so its either boiling hot or freezing cold, which kind of defeats the purpose of a hot water system for your home. Generally, people don't like freezing showers and almost everyone doesn't like to boil themselves alive. They recommended buying a unit with a knob on the front that chooses the temperature. This would mean turning just the hot tap on and then walking back and forth to the hot water unit and adjusting it there until you liked the temperature, which defeats the purpose of taps. I will be replacing it with a storage hot water unit shortly as they won't fix it. If the unit isn't supposed to do what a hot water system does then why keep it on the market?

I would have installed close to 100 hot water units in my career and have never had any problems with any other brands. This specific unit has let me and my clients down twice. Iv installed 6 of these units, 2 have not worked. That means 33% of the time they have failed. Maybe it was just a bad batch, as they were installed around the same time. Either way, I will never use Steibel again. They really wanted to avoid fixing the units. I spent hours searching for restrictors, generally investigating the issue and servicing taps in these houses (obviously for free) trying to fix the problem but there just wasn't anything else it could be but the units themselves.

Spend the money and upgrade to a small electric storage or gas unit if possible.

SimpleX does the job – I have purchased about six SimpleX units over the years. I haven't wanted to upgrade because of the initial costs of changing over. It's been easier just to replace the units. We've never had hot/cold shower problems, but the element could be made to last longer - while it works the SimpleX is great. Show details

A very poor hot water system – I had a new Stiebel Simplex hot water system installed in my unit in Perth in February. I have just had it removed as it doesn't give a decent supply of hot water. It fluctuates and in the winter is lukewarm and no pressure. it cannot be adjusted. Very disappointed. $950 down the drain!  Show details

Water too hot or cold – Water very hot (can't adjust temperature) but when trying to add a little cold water the hot goes off, so a real juggling act to get the right temperature, almost ok for cold winter days but dreading summer as I know it won't be pleasant. It also makes a noise when being turned on and off and whilst running, we were not told about this which seems… Read more

strange as we complained about the old one making noise to the plumber who installed it. To change over from a Wilson to the Steibel cost $1752.....ouch, that's a lot of money to service a two bedroom duplex!

Continues to Fail – I am writting this as the electrician who has been called out(by owner) to service this unit. I was called out initially when they replaced a troublesome Wilson SuperX instantaneous. The Stiebel was recommended as a reliable unit, however in Jan 2017 I was called back as only warm water. An element(1 of 3) had died...Stiebel replaced the heating… Read more

tank(which includes the elements) as its a sealed unit. Called out again today(13 months later) due to luke warm water....diagnosis? Two elements dead.

Ok an update on the mutt of a HWS the last tank was replaced(march 2018) by stiebel even though out of warranty although they charged $180 labour. Ive been called out again today July 2019 and guess what another dead element. It would seem these units last about 12-18months.

A really dodgy unit – No need to have a water water system if you only want a cold shower. This unit won't handle hot and cold (like warm) so that only leaves the scalding option. Works well until the warranty runs out (2yrs) Then, you can pay a plumber hundreds to try and fix it, or bin it and buy a decent unit.  Show details

Poor advice, poor product, even worse back up – I am a plumber, and we were advised to use Siebel Eltron Simplex hot water systems on a block of home units we built. We have had nothing but problems with these hot water units. When asked by Siebel why we used these particular hot water units, I said these recommended to us by the supplier. I have never in my 33 years of plumbing had so much… Read more

trouble with hot water units in one hit as these. The trouble now is Siebel have suggested I replace these hot water units with another one of their products at my expense, and I dispose of the original simplex model. Ever one can have issues with an appliance, it is the post purchase service that is important, and Siebel will leave you abandoned, no happy.

Shower used to cycle between hot and cold – I was having trouble with cycling between scalding hot and ice cold, but husband had perfect warm showers every time. The problem may have been that he had the hot water knob on high pressure and I had it on low pressure. After doing some research, tankless heaters work differently than tank heaters: hot water temperature is inversely related to… Read more

water pressure...i.e., the higher the pressure of the water, the faster it passes through the heater, and comes out cooler! My guess is that the heater also has a restrictor...so on low pressure the water goes through the heater too slow, gets too hot and trips off the restrictor, cutting off the hot water flow immediately, resulting in ice cold water, thus cycling between scalding hot and ice cold. So now I have to turn the hot knob all the way on to high pressure, then add a little cold to get it right.

Lava or hypothermia – Plumber who installed this system did it in good faith, unknowingly he cursed my bathroom shower with inability to have any intermittent medium temperature. Totally infuriating when all you want is to have a normal shower with out needing to make a visit to the local hospital for third degree burns.  Show details

Scalding hot or cold – This hot water system lasted four years with elements going after 2.5years which meant regulating near impossible. When I first installed The hot water system I switched the shower head to an imported European one with no flow restrictions on the line (30L a min). Also never use a mixer shower tap with it as made regulation even harder (I unfortunately had renovated bathroom prior to this hot water system).  Show details

Very disappointed with this hot water system ! Either scalding hot or freezing cold!! :(((((( HELPPP – My Stiebel Eltron Simplex Hot Water System was only installed late 2013 and has never really worked that well (in that it doesn't seem to retain the water at a warm temperature - only seems to alternate between hot and cold!!) It stopped working altogether over a year ago and a technician came along and fixed "the magnets" (or something) as it was… Read more

still under the warranty period.

Now whilst the system heats the hot water up, it seems to shut off once I try to add cold water. It's now gotten to the point where I can't have a decent shower as spend most of the shower trying to adjust the hot water. It's just ridiculous! Now when my sister comes to stay, she can't even shower her children anymore for fear the water will scald them or they'll be freezing!!

I understand that the warranty period has now lapsed but I don't feel it's acceptable for this product to operate like this. I called the Steibel Eltron customer service department (the number on the manual /warranty card) a little while ago and was told it was the "cheapest" of the cheap, so to look at replacing it with a more expensive, reliable hot water system.

Judging by some similar negative reviews given about this product, it seems it may be a problem with the unit so feel that Stiebel Eltron should really be held responsible here for either a replacement product or the costs of replacement. It's only 3 years old!! Can someone please contact me to assist, otherwise I will have to take this further to a consumer protection body of some sort as I'm really over it now :(((

Much appreciated.

This is a lemon. Don't wast your money – Bought this product for my parent in Sep2013. Every year we had to call the plumber as the hot water supply is not stable. Always no hot water in the middle of shower. That's horrible for a 70 year-old couple. Now it is out of warranty period. They wanna charge me for repairs. To me this unit is a lemon and the quality is no better than a… Read more

Terrible product – Alternates between scalding hot and freezing cold. No amount of fiddling, patience, or plumber intervention makes any difference.

Not compatible with warm climates? – Somewhat bearable in winter, with the hot water only cutting off occasionally, but every summer it makes my showering a miserable experience. It turns off whenever I add too much cold, which in summer means it turns off within seconds of me bringing the water to a comfortable temperature (more cold is required in summer to be bearable because the… Read more

unit always heats the incoming water up by 25°C** and in summer the incoming water is already warm, it's probably around 15-20°C). I made sure the limiter/restricter in my shower head was removed when it was installed. The only other thing I can think of that might fix it is to buy the most insanely high flow rate shower head I can find, with the consequence that any semblance of water saving be damned, not to mention that with such a high flow rate the water's likely to escape the shower area more readily and make the bathroom floor wet. Would've been nice if the unit came with some sort of temperature control so it wasn't stuck at a mandatory 25°C** heating! I'm sure it works just fine in cold countries like Germany but without a temperature control it seems like a terrible match for Australia.

**Actually, I wonder if it's heating even higher than 25°C... I just reread the company's description "7.5 Litres per minute delivers a 25 Degrees Celsius rise" and "Switch on flow rate of 4.5 litres per minute". Possibly a slower flow rate = an even higher heating amount? Ugh.

Can't live with it – I have same problem as jackie on a previous post. It's either too hot or add cold and goes freezing. Impossible to regulate. Plumber said that's just the way they operate. shower goes like this - most of the water is wasted as I stand to the side and wait for the moments where it is regulating between the boiling hot and freezing cold and then strep in for about 20 secs before have to step out again and wait for the next 20sec period. Tried the tips - restrictor, turning on hot water full etc. Only got put in September so any other problems should have been noticed by plumber at time. I just think these IHWS are waste of time. If precious poster managed to fix this problem id love to hear from you the solution. Cheers

Lasted only as long as the warranty period and then died - I do not call that a quality product – We had one of these units installed at our offices. It worked well for almost exactly 2 years and then failed (element dead) - Considering it was used may 3 or 4 times a day for a minute or two makes me doubt the quality of this product. Calls to Stiebel fell on deaf ears, the service people are not interested - pay up, or no hot water appears to be the mantra - very disappointing.

What a surprise – This is marketed as a replacement unit and that's what I needed. I had a 20 year old Elekra unit that I'd managed to keep going long after it's use by date, but it finally died. The Stiebel unit is simply able to produce hot water at a higher flow rate. It has a reed switch and relay to turn on the heating which means that it makes an audible click/clunk as it turns on and off, but otherwise just does its job. Very happy.  Show reply

Lost all faith – Installed in December 2011, will trip switch in meter box when filling bath, This has happened since I have had a Wilson super x installed last week in another part of the property, that seams to work o.k. Was ok to start with No hot water
