Sunbeam Pie Magic Questions & Answers
VerifiedI use pie maker cold and it works perfect. Second batch, very difficult to put pastry in when hot, starts cooking before l have the filling in?? Using it cold gives me the most consistent results.
Whats the lining of the piemaker made of? Does it contain PFAS? Instructions don't specify what the non-stick surface is made of..Anyone know.
Can you still buy the smaller pie maker. It’s a 4 pie maker but the filling well is not as big. I gave mine away when l bought the new larger filling one but l prefer the older version. Thanks Chris
pie maker is taking over 20 minutes to heat up and over 40 minutes to cook the pies
Heating up sounds about right but taking 40 minutes to cook seems too long. We usually pop the pie in and then heat it up. I think you should contact Sunbeam.
When using pie maker for first time do you heat up first and then oil or apply oil and then heat?
The Sunbeam pie maker is non stick, there is no need to add oil.
If that’s so why do instructions say ‘Before using for 1st time plates must be seasoned to protect non stick surfaces’ and then proceeds to tell how to do it but doesn’t clarify if you heat unit first or apply after heating. Confused……
How long does it take for ready light to turn on? Mine has never turned on like another reviewer has said.
Should come on in around 5 minutes, if it never comes on at all, it is faulty.
Thanks Charlie, does the light turn on “ready” for me to start layering the pastry/filling or for when the pie is cooked and “ready” to turn. I’m guessing ready the first because you said 5 minutes. The little window showing the warm/ready signal also accumulates condensation is that normal?
Can you cook quiche without the top layer of pastry??
Yes you can. TIP: put an oiled sheet of baking paper between the top of the quiche and the lid of the piemaker to stop any sticking.
I have had my pie maker on for 30 mins and the "Ready" light is not coming on. The Warm Up light just stays on but the elements feel quite hot. Is this a fault or does it take longer for the initial warm up?

I have a sunbeam pie maker when i make apple pies the top pastry does not appear to be cooked also meat pies what am i doing wrong
Hi Elizabeth, you are not adding enough filling. You need to add enough so that the top of the pie can make contact with the top element of the pie maker. I had the same issue.
Hello Elizabeth, Charlie is spot on! Please add a quarter cup more of filling, this will ensure that the top pastry can touch the top heating elements.

Got the large pie maker always Leaves a small circle of uncooked and un puffed pastry
Hi Cheryl, I am assuming you are talking about the pie top. You need to be sure you put enough filling in, so that when the pie puffs up the top makes contact with the top element of thevpie maker. If it doesnt, it will not cook properly. Try adding more filling until this works then you will understand the quantity needed for all your pies. I had the same problem
Happy pie making.
Charlie.
Hello Cheryl G, Charlie is spot on! The Sunbeam Pie Magics has extra deep base and top plates, making 4 traditional size pies with maximum filling. So, please try adding more filling to raise the pastry to the top plates ensuring your get perfectly crisp results.

Does the pie maker contain PFOS and PFOA in the coating
Hello Patricia, The non-stick coating is PFOS and PFOA free.
Does it contain any other harmful gen x chemicals to be aware of?
I have been using my pie maker consistently for 5 years. Recently it has started to burn on the bottom. Is there anything I can do to fix?
A workaround might be to put the base pastry in the pie maker a minute or so after turning it on before it gets to full temperature. Then fill and top as usual. See how that goes.
5 years of constant use Tracey, wow, one might say you got your moneys worth. Might be time to enjoy a new one.
Yeah, I hear you! Didn’t realise it had been 5 years until I got the book out and saw the receipt.
Can you use the pie maker without heating first
I would not recommend it when cooking pastry. having it preheated helps the base to form a crust early and stop your pastry from being soggy. However, if you are cooking things like omellettes, (yes you can make them on the pie maker, just make sure you dont scratch the nonstick surface when removing them), you could get away with starting from cold, they will just take longer to cook. You probably dont gain anything from starting cold as you could turn it on and let it heat up while you make your omellette mixture.
It is easier to put the pastry in when the pie maker is cold. We have made pies using the pie maker starting from cold and they have turned out fine. Check the online manual, page 10. All the best, :)
Agree. The problem with trying to organise the pastry and the filling is a nightmare for me. Burnt fingers was the result. I always do a cold start now. The only other way I think a reheat of the piemaker would work for "me" is if I get out my pie tins in the back of the cupboard and assemble the pastry in theme and then put in the frig and when ready to cook take out pop in the piemaker and then add the cool/cold filling.
Does anyone have a method for cutting the pastry so that there isn't so much waste? Can only get one top and bottom from 1 sheet of pastry!
You can join sheets together using a small overlap, the join should disappear when cooked. I have read that some people just cut squares and mould them into the base. You might even consider a pasta machine to run any excess dough through if you find using a hand roller tiresome. You will end up with a sheet that is just wide enough for the pie maker.
I forgot to pre hear the pie maker. What will happen ?
Never tried really, but I guess it might just take a bit longer to cook? Maybe just keep an eye on that
Hi Cam, I never pre heat the pie maker & my pies turn out great.
Does it radiate heat downwards on the bench? How did you over come this, if it did.
I never had that issue.
Can I make only 2 pies in my 4 pie maker
Yes, you sure can. I made 2 vanilla slices last week that turned out great.
Could someone please tell me What the wattage of this pie maker
Hi gregg r, I just looked on the back of mine & it says 1100 - 1200 W, hope this helps
Hi gregg r, The wattage is between 1100-1200 watts. Thanks
Thanks HEAPS
yep, just turn the product over
Just love my pie maker, can you use blind bake marbles to ensure base is baked correctly, browned etc. can I buy replacement pastry cutters. Lost when shifting house?
Hi Lucky27, Yes you can use blind bake marbles & yes we do have replacement cutters the part number is PM46002 & you can find this on big warehouse spares attached external link Thanks
My pie crusts are tough, short crust on bottom and puff on top have same consistency. Puff not flaky at all. Same brand I’ve been using to make without. Any tips?
Hi Kate, There is a wide selection of ready rolled pastry available in your supermarket freezer, such as shortcrust, puff, butter puff and wholemeal pastry. These pastries all give great results and are handy to keep in your freezer. Due to the high fat content in pastry there may be some oil seepage from the pies during the cooking process. This does not affect the quality of the pies. Therefore we recommend using Light Puff Pastry for the top combined with a Light Shortcrust Pastry for the base. For a more buttery taste use butter puff pastry for your pastry top combined with a shortcrust pastry for your base. This combination is ideal for desserts. Homemade pastry can also be used. Hope this helps. Thanks
