Sunbeam Hints & Tips!

‘Mindful Ironing’ Is A Thing And We’re Totally Getting On Board

alt text

Ironing. Let’s face it; it’s not exactly our most beloved chore. No one gets up on a Saturday morning and willingly thinks to themselves, ‘Hmm, it’s a beautiful day. Might spoil myself by getting stuck into a basket or two of wrinkly clothes.’

But here’s the thing – maybe we should?

Meditation teacher and founder of The Wayward Emma Vidgen, says indulging in a spot of ‘mindful ironing’ is actually a great way to still our busy brains, centre us and get a little Zen.

alt text

“The thing I like about mindful ironing is that it forces you to pay attention to your garment. Taking time out to pay attention to every seam and flourish, every button and detail helps foster a sense of gratitude for our clothing,” she explains.

“Fashion has never been more affordable or more available to us, and it's so easy to take that all for granted. Having a mindful moment while you're doing the ironing (or hand washing, or putting the washing away) is a great opportunity to reconnect with our clothes, and appreciate all the joy they bring.”

Recently, as part of a mindfulness exercise, Vidgen encouraged her Instagram followers to take part in a ‘30 Days of Single Tasking’ exercise. They were asked to commit to focusing on just one single task each day for a month. The aim? To practice a little bit of everyday meditation through attention to minutiae.

“All you have to do is complete the daily task…with a sense of mindfulness – no multitasking allowed,” she explained.

Some of the activities included mindfully brushing your hair for five minutes, taking a walk without listening to a podcast or any music, eating a piece of fruit mindfully, and reading a chapter of your book without stopping to check your phone. As she explained, it was perfect “for anyone who doesn’t have time to meditate or has tried it and just couldn’t get into it.”

And yep, you guessed it – on day 16, ironing got a look in.

alt text

It wasn’t exactly her most enthusiastically taken-up task, but it proved a worthwhile exercise nonetheless. And all of a sudden people were ironing up a storm – all in the name of mental health!

Mindful ironing might not be your thing – and that’s OK. But the idea of stopping to pause and reflect is a great mental health strategy – especially at the moment. And using ironing as a gateway to that can’t be a bad thing. Pop on a playlist, listen to a podcast or watch a show or two – all in the name of self-care.

The Home Edit or Marie Kondo’s excellent series on Netflix are great shows to binge while ploughing through a basket – the time will whizz by.

Make it a good excuse for a bit of ‘me time’ – invest in a good quality appliance and the task will become all that more bearable – maybe even enjoyable?

alt text

Failing all that, you can always just tell the rest of your family you’re doing the ironing – and you won’t hear a peep! Just close the door and enjoy a bit of blissful, uninterrupted time out from the hordes. Add a glass of your favourite tipple and voila! You’re ‘wine-ing’!

So next time you groan at the thought of getting stuck into that overflowing basket of clothes, take a moment to change your mindset. Think of it as a chance to zone out and Zen out as you practice a bit of everyday mindfulness. Ironing might just turn out to be the mental health tonic you’ve been looking for in these uncertain times.

Namaste, ironers of the world. Namaste.
