Swann Doorway Alert Kit – Every night, unknown people creep into houses (usually when the home owners are asleep) and steal jewellery, wallets, mobile phones and laptops etc and especially the keys to a car or cars,... the first the victims know about it is when the noise of their vehicles speeding away wakes them up, security cameras are well and good, except that they only show who was in the house and took the vehicles,...too late. If you live in a two story home, you'd have no idea that someone was in your garage, preparing to leave. A Swann Doorway kit from Bunnings costs $46 it comes with 2 sensors, more can be added if need be. Ours is placed facing out past the steps leading to the front door, (this picks up someone around 3.5 metres from the steps) there is also another sensor on the walkway which covers 6 windows on the side of the house. The receiver is located close to the sleeping area, volume and tones are all adjustable. Proper placement of the sensors (to stop false alarms) is very straight forward, just don't point them towards tree branches that may move on a windy day.

Some facts and figures

In Australia a car is stolen every 11 minutes. Advances in security technology have made it impossible to simply ‘hot wire’ a modern car. 70 per cent of cars are stolen with their own keys. Half of all cars stolen are taken from the home, including driveways, carports and garages. Offenders will sneak into homes, taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows. Often the homeowner is present and for this reason, we use the term ‘sneak thefts’ to describe these types of offences. In most cases, thieves will actively avoid coming into contact with the homeowner. In fact, in 95 per cent of incidents there is no confrontation with the homeowner. 77 per cent of cars are stolen for short term purposes not involving the vehicle's value which may include joyriding, as a temporary means of transport, or for use in the commission of another crime.
