Perfect for a rental property that didn't come with a doorbell. Basic but effective – Recently moved into townhouse which has no doorbell. With the security screen in front of the door there is no easy place for visitors to knock and… Read more

let us know they have arrived. So after missing a delivery it was time for a doorbell. So last time I was in bunnings picked this up on special.

Conclusion: If you are after a basic doorbell (eg Press button > makes noise) this fits the bill great. No wires and doesn't occupy a power point. This fits the bill of a basic wireless doorbell nicely (Unless you intend to mount the button in a rainy area, in which case look for a weather sealed one)

Use: Put the button out the front with double sided sticky tap so easy to move some time in the future range of wireless chimes is plenty for our use in a 2 storey townhouse. I put one of the chimes just resting in a window sill in the middle of the house. It's loud enough to hear throughout the house - no problems I am only using one of the two supplied chimes as the one we are using is plenty loud enough. So far press button - chime activates. Absolutely no cases of phantom operations so far-(which some brands of wireless doorbells can do)

Good points: Great price Operates well Very easy to install - just use the supplied tape (or screws and plugs) 32 tones - plenty loud enough that we only are using one of the chime modules Uses AA batteries on the chimes, therefore not taking up a power point and unaffected by power outages. AA are an easy size to find/keep on hand.

Couple of things to note: (Neither here nor there points.) Doesn't come with AA's for the chimes - no big deal for the price. I put in a couple of rechargeable aa batteries in. The button module on the other hand does come with it's cr2032 battery ready to use. The button module is not water resistant so I wouldn't recommend if you intend to use it in an exposed location. In my case the door is out of direct water or sunlight.

Bad points: To change the tone you press a button on the sender. Each button moves the chime to another tone. which means if you like a tone, but try another one - you have to cycle all the way through 31 tones to get back to the one you liked. It's not that big of a deal but it Many of the tones are pretty cringeworthy and distorted sounding, But there are some that work well enough.

Rating: I'm giving it 4 stars because it works great but could be improved upon - namely being able to go in both directions through the tones. Perhaps less distorted sounding chime recordings.

Unknown - how long the batteries will last it is way to early to say

I fumbled my way through a DYI installation. Yes, it is easy now I know, very easy in fact, but having not done it before, I reached out to Doorbird on a number of occasions as was promptly and professionally dealt with. Definitely recommend the product for that reason alone.

As for the product itself, the quality is definitely premium. I agree that the night vision isn't as good as, say my night vision security camera, but its certainly adequate enough. The product is classy (in my opinion) and I enjoy the fact I can remotely unlock my gate if I need to. I can't seem to get HD streaming working when on my wifi (could be an internal issue) but the video is quality is very good and almost instantaneous. When off WIFI and away from home, its maybe 4-5 seconds before video start streaming but that is quick, quicker than I could get to my front door anyway.

There is a wealth of features you can use to connect to door locks, door bells, SIP phones etc. I also purchased the Doorbird door chime which was very easy to set-up.

I would have given this product 5 stars but its still lacking AppleHome Kit integration (and in fairness, I have yet to find an intercom system that is compatible with HomeKit yet). I understand they are in talks with Apple to integrate HomeKit but it has some complexities. I really hope it happens because it opens up a world of other possibilities for me, especially as all my other smart devices are HomeKit enabled. Hopefully, this comes soon.

The other minor thing, I wish the system gave power to the strike plate, rather than you having to run a separate cable too power the strike plate. I understand why they did it that way but would have been good to have the option. I did have to run POE to my intercom to power it so I did both at the same time but it would be much more convenient if you only had to run POE and that also was able to power to the strike plate. Saying that, having never used POE before, it is great how you can power and get internet to the device with one cable, even if I had to have separate power for my strike plate. For other people this is probably irreverent.

Overall, this is a nice system. Plenty of options, stylish, well manufactured and feels premium. it is very well supported in Australia.

the price.

It does everything the more expensive IMOU did and more.

Setup was a breeze, and it takes 7 hours to charge but considering the charge should last around six months that's no big deal.

In my case it had a 60% charge, so it took around 4 hours to be fully charged. The 128gb Micro SD card fitted without a fuss and the supplied chime paired easily. The unit immediately began updated.

The coloured light on the button can be changed and the chime tone can also be changed.

The unit can also be paired with a hub or multiple chimes. It was bright and clear with ample volume

The setup at the doorway was very easy and I did not use the supplied wedge. When checking the vision, it was extra wide, but the picture itself was a little on the bright side, a tone adjustment would have been nice.

It also has a spotlight and just about all setting can be adjusted to suit, actually I did not expect to have so many at this price point.

What I liked was the reaction of the unit, it began recording almost immediately and there was no delay in the chime when the button was pressed.

Also, it has prerecorded messages when the doorbell is pressed. A nice touch, plus also, you can take a still photo of the scene from your smartphone app.

There is voice recording and you can talk to the person via the speaker, but I always leave this off as I tend to get a lot of tinny feedback.

You have coloured night vision if you want it and you are able to adjust the sensitivity of the unit. Definitely plenty of bang for your bucks and honestly why would you pay over $150.00 when this does it all. All in all a very good unit, highly recommended.

Excellent product. Happy to recommend – THE GOOD: Product feels well made. I had some glitches setting it up but it generally works well. You do have to create an account with Eufy but… Read more

there are no subscriptions or ongoing payments. Video, images and sound are stored locally but inside the house, not on the doorbell which means that if someone damages or steals your doorbell they won't get your images. You can stream live video from your doorbell and also view recorded events from your phone. I believe there's an option to store recordings in the cloud (which I suspect will cost) but I have not explored that. I particularly like the "human detection" feature which means you don't notification of animals or trees blowing in the wind.

THE WEIRD: The product is feature rich so you should expect some complexity with the options however the menu options on the app are less than intuitive. Eg: The product has two parts (and this is a quote from the setup guide) "The video doorbell at your door" and "The wifi doorbell chime in your home". Once I figured that out I named the first "Door" and the second "Bell" which helped sort out a few issues however while both devices appear on the list when you select the "Devices" tab while under the "Security" tab, there's only "Bell" which apparently refers to both. There are mode profiles, eg "home" and "away" which is good. You don't want to be hearing the "human approaching" alarm and recording video every time someone walks past the camera if you're home. When you configure the "away" profile for "Bell" you only get options for "Door". I'd like to stop the Bell (in the house) from chiming if I'm away but apparently I don't. To switch profiles, I'd expect to see one screen with all the profile options, (Home/Away/etc) the active one highlighted, so at a glance you can see the current setting and the one you want. There is such a page but to get there you go to the security tab where you see a "Group Control" page with two prominent options, "I'm Staying" and "I'm Leaving". There's also an option to create a new control group and at the bottom there's "Device Control" which says "Door bell Home>". Apparently "Home" means that the "Home" profile is active and if you click on "Home" you see the other options. Another Eg: There are two "notification" menus. One pertains to app notifications to your phone. The other pertains to what (doorbell) events you get notified of (via the app) and how. Web searches on "how to" tell you about the second, but not how to get there.

THE BAD: I couldn't get live stream working (see who's at the door). It would record video. It would send me notifications. I could view recorded videos through the app, but not live. I sent the support team an email and got instructions on how to view live videos. Even though it was exactly as I had tried before, this time it worked. I've since discovered that the reason it worked then and not the first time is a bug in the app. Exit the app (press the Android back button twice) and restart it and live stream works again. I've had to do this a couple of times. I considered taking off one star for the weird and the bad but support made up for it.

SUPPORT: Support has been excellent. I submitted a query via their online form. I had to upload proof of purchase. I received a reply email within the hour - most helpful. I replied with another query and again the answer came promptly.

IN SHORT: The user interface in the app sucks, however there are limited things you'll want to do with a video doorbell depending on your personal bent and you'll soon figure out which direction you have to poke your tongue to get what you want. After that it all works, and it works well.

Edit - after a year's use: It may depend on your phone specs and the performance of the Internet (both at home and wherever you are) but on my budget phone (A series Oppo) there's a delay in getting notification on your phone. It helps to have unrestricted background processing set for the app but that does chew battery noticeably. I have used it to talk to courier drivers but I've also missed a few. Geofencing is on the menu but it's still in "beta" mode, ie not officially supported as yet. It's a way of setting the operation mode dependant on whether you're home or not - it'll be brilliant when it works. It doesn't affect my rating because I didn't know about it when I bought it. In short: Still happy.

Swann Doorway Alert Kit – Every night, unknown people creep into houses (usually when the home owners are asleep) and steal jewellery, wallets, mobile phones and laptops etc … Read more

and especially the keys to a car or cars,... the first the victims know about it is when the noise of their vehicles speeding away wakes them up, security cameras are well and good, except that they only show who was in the house and took the vehicles,...too late. If you live in a two story home, you'd have no idea that someone was in your garage, preparing to leave. A Swann Doorway kit from Bunnings costs $46 it comes with 2 sensors, more can be added if need be. Ours is placed facing out past the steps leading to the front door, (this picks up someone around 3.5 metres from the steps) there is also another sensor on the walkway which covers 6 windows on the side of the house. The receiver is located close to the sleeping area, volume and tones are all adjustable. Proper placement of the sensors (to stop false alarms) is very straight forward, just don't point them towards tree branches that may move on a windy day.

Some facts and figures

In Australia a car is stolen every 11 minutes. Advances in security technology have made it impossible to simply ‘hot wire’ a modern car. 70 per cent of cars are stolen with their own keys. Half of all cars stolen are taken from the home, including driveways, carports and garages. Offenders will sneak into homes, taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows. Often the homeowner is present and for this reason, we use the term ‘sneak thefts’ to describe these types of offences. In most cases, thieves will actively avoid coming into contact with the homeowner. In fact, in 95 per cent of incidents there is no confrontation with the homeowner. 77 per cent of cars are stolen for short term purposes not involving the vehicle's value which may include joyriding, as a temporary means of transport, or for use in the commission of another crime.

falling apart. The remote lock/unlock stopped working, the motor kept getting stuck, and the fingerprint reader became useless. The mechanical part of the lock is fine — which tells you the problem is the cheap actuator and electronics, not my door.

Honestly, I should’ve known better. This thing is clearly built for the American market, and it shows — flashy features, weak hardware. Meanwhile, the Chinese and Singaporean brands are the ones actually building reliable smart locks with strong motors and proper engineering. Lesson learned.

If you want a lock that lasts longer than a phone contract, skip Eufy and buy something from a brand that actually specialises in smart door hardware.

Woman's hand using a door keypad

34% of burglars have been reported to break in from the front door and 22% go through the back door. More than half of burglaries could have been prevented with stronger door security, and choosing the right product for your door could be one of the most important and proactive decisions you make today. To help you do that, here is a rundown of the different types of tools that you can use to keep your door crime-safe.

Door locks and door reinforcers

How sturdy is your lock or door? We’d like to believe that they could measure up to the test of a door kick. In reality, there are too many doors with weak hinges and locks that can easily be broken with a blunt instrument or picked with a toolkit. To get the best tools to protect against forced entry, it could be useful to invest in some reinforced door locks.

  • Deadbolt locks prevent picking, unlike spring locks, because they can only be moved to the open position by a rotating key.
  • Door lock reinforcers are metal covers that can be screwed around your existing lock for extra durability. They are very easy to install and are affordable additions to your door security package.
  • Door reinforcers are metal plates that can be screwed to the hinges of the door (where the door is most vulnerable) to strengthen the area around the latch and prevent forced entry by kick-in. They are very easy to install and are an affordable safeguarding option.
  • If you’d like more dynamic security, you can get a smart lock and pair it with a security system which will sound an alarm when breached.

Door jammers and door bars

Other ways of stopping forced entry include installing a door jammer, which is a very common front door security measure. They’re usually made of plastic or steel and are placed at an angle to the door to keep the door handle in place. They are easily portable, accessible and pressure mounted.

A door security bar can be placed in the middle of the door which prevents a door from being kicked in. Some can be hard-mounted while others are detachable and use a pressure mount - this is useful for apartments and houses that you may be renting. They are adjustable and can fit the length of most doors. Small but sturdy, they can resist up to 160kg of force, depending on the model you buy.

Safety screens and security screens

On those hot summer days when you’d like to have the door open but want to prevent bugs from getting in or pets from getting out, safety screens can come in handy. Safety screens have aluminium diamond grilles which look similar to security screens but only serve as a visual deterrent rather than a physical one as they can easily be pushed in or cut open.

Security screens achieve the same cooling effect but are also designed to keep intruders out (including the insect variety). This is done through their metal mesh, steel construction, robust frames and locking systems. They can be fitted on a variety of doors, such as hinged doors, sliding doors, french doors and stacking doors.

All security screens should meet Australian Standard AS 5039-2008, which tests the ability of screens and grilles to resist attempted break-ins. They also have to meet Australian Standard AS 5041-2003, which sets out methods for testing security screen doors; tests include a dynamic impact test, a pull test, a probe test, and more.

Shutters and visual deterrents

Sometimes preventing access to the view inside your home and the contents within it can go a long way in terms of safety, which is why it's generally safer to have a windowless door. When this isn’t possible, it could be a good idea to install safety shutters.

For a more affordable option, door window stickers can also be used to block the view inside your place. Also, a CCTV warning sticker can help ward off snoopers.

Video doorbells

One great way to start protecting your house is to check who’s approaching your doorway. Video doorbells are compact and nifty inventions that let you vet your arrivals - even when you’re not at home. They work by live streaming video camera footage directly to your smartphone, and are automatically uploaded to a cloud or are downloaded manually into a hard drive.

They are a great safeguarding feature and while, unlike the others, they won’t do much in the case of a kick-in or forced entry, they’re certainly likely to deter any thieves and let them know you’re not easy prey. Surveillance systems, similarly, can be an extremely effective way of preventing crime as the camera footage can be used as evidence.

Prices range from anywhere between $50 to over $800 with those in the middle and upper range offering useful a wider range of features.

Some features that a video doorbell can have include:

  • Night vision: Most crime happens in the darkness where it is harder for people to see or notice. If you live in a particularly dark area, this could be essential in helping to keep you safe and deter thieves from entering your door.
  • Motion detection: If you want to be alerted of someone’s presence around your house even when you’re not home, there are now smart motion detectors which will start recording as soon as they detect motion and alert you.
  • Two-way audio: This feature lets you have a conversation with whoever's at your door, so you can check what they're there for without having to open the door.
  • Live viewing: Live viewing allows you to see what's happening outside your door in real time.
  • Siren link: A feature that is linked to an alarm (either an audible alarm or a silent alarm that alerts the authorities) when there is unauthorised access to your home.
  • Cloud storage: Cloud storage lets you store video footage on the cloud.
  • Facial recognition: How this works varies depending on the model, but facial recognition can alert you when "unrecognised" faces approach your door.

Other factors to consider when choosing a door security product

Build quality

The quality of your product is in direct correlation to how safe you’ll be, therefore, it’s best not to skimp out in this particular category. This is especially true if you’re choosing a product to strengthen your door against forced break-ins.

Ease of use

Since you’ll be using this product every day, you should get yourself familiar with the functions and features of the product and how best to make use of them. If you’re not very techy and know you won’t touch 90% of the advertised features, try buying something simpler.

Value for money

Security products can be an expensive investment and you want to know you’re getting it right - see how others rate the product in terms of value for money to make sure you’re spending your money wisely.

Ease of installation

A big deterrent that people may face when looking for door security products is how difficult it will be to install and maintain. Finding a suitable product for you depends on how technical you want to get and if you will be installing it yourself or if the installation is offered as a service.

Connectivity and reliability

Just as you need your doors to be safe, you need those safety products to be reliable and work efficiently 24/7. It could be useful to check the feature specs of your product (in the instance of door jammers) to see how much force they can tolerate. Similarly, for electronic safety devices, make sure that the connectivity range is suitable for the size of your home (or the area you want surveilled).
