I was in Auckland. I entered my home's street number and street name. The TomTom Start52 came up with Invercargill, a place about 1200 kilometres away on a different island. I then entered Auckland after my homes street number and street name. It still only came up with Invercargill. I unmounted the TomTom Start52 from my vehicle. I then smashed… Read more

the piece of trash on something solid about ten times and left it there. I have now ordered a Garmin DRIVE 53. I will never buy a TomTom anything ever again. It is utter trash. A score of 1/5 is too high.

FOREVER FAULTY & REPLACED 4 TIMES – Purchased a Start62 14/04/2020 & after 12 months started to switch off & reboot all the time. Eventually was sent to Victoria for repair & they replaced with a Via1620/1625. Buggar me if this one didnt start switching off etc after 2 months so again was sent to Victoria & replaced with another Via1620/1625 12/2021. Well you guessed it, this one… Read more

didn't even want to switch on. Would not recommend purchasing TomTom, if you have problems your immediately sent overseas with the check list trying to solve, & its like talking to a brick wall. USELESS. No way can you ring or get in contact with TomTom in Australia. Try to get your money back for the device & the 3 times postage for the faulty devices, you got buckleys!

Some great features – Compared to the old XL Classic it has some fantastic features: starting with the lifetime maps, then auto shut-down when the car is turned off (and visa versa); better lane guidance; what I don't like is that it's much harder to clear the route and/or adjust on the go. So overall it's a step up, but some older features should've been kept as is. Show details

Fantastic unit – Used TomTom Start52 on a day-to-day bases for work, that took me out and about the city and country towns, always spot on. As long as you have the right names to start with.  Show details

Terrible customer service – There is no Customer Service telephone number... its easier to get through to Fort Knox!! I have a problem with the suction pad of my GO 520 car gps not sticking to my windscreen and nobody can help. I tried the Chat Help but it was closed at 3.30pm WA time. I then tried "Contact Us" and it was frustrating trying to explain to AI ..a robot!!… Read more

which came up with the most ludacris suggestions not even related to my problem. I just feel as a Customer we are all being taken for granted and "Customer Service" is just a Marketing slogan with no substance. I won't buy Tomtom again.

Better off without it – I have had the unit for 2.5 years and it has been the biggest waste of money. On a recent trip in Central Queensland I followed the directions explicitly but I eventually ended up 15kms further away from where I was going. I had an old Navman unit that I plugged in and it gave me a totally different route that got me there with no problems. … Read more

Similarly it had suggested doing U-turns at traffic lights that do not allow U-turns. The touch screen is a joke as you have to press it extremely hard to operate it. It often does not provide verbal instruction. I have gone back to the Navman and tossed the TomTom. I will never buy anything from them again

Avoid – The map visualization sucks, it will ruin most of your trips. It costs a lot for what it offers. Battery lasts for 30 minutes. Freeze for no reason (no sun heat, cold oranything else) TomTom Connect Software usually takes 1 hour to update and gets stuck. Avoid this nav that I bought on highway for emergency. Show details

Will never buy another Tom Tom – My Start 62 gave reasonable service for 2 1/2 Years Had a problem after upgrade of map a month ago and did a reset then ok. Just done another map upgrade which went faulty at Tom Tom site saying they were very busy. Now it only works when connected to My Drive, Tried everything TomTom suggested good. In vehicle it will only half load and go blank I am not alone with this problem when ask about it on Google. Show details

Waste of time and money – Maps are really good. I installed it on m y Android head unit by wifi. When it works its good. But the device loses contact and it has to be reloaded. That makes it useless in traffic. Show details

This is the worst Tomtom I have ever used – I have had nothing but trouble with me Tomtom Start52. It is hard to use compared to the other more expensive Tomtom's. It is hard to enter addresses and it doesn't give the name of the street you are turning into. If you forget the street # of where your destination is you can not find it on this device. I really regret buying this Tomtom Start 52 Show details

Great product for the price – Needed a GPS to add to my Hema maps on my Tablet for a trip east than up the coast, Bought this on the fly with one day to go before I left, set up was Great- quick and simple, set my designation was easy as, (as you can just select the centre of a town unlike my last GPS which is 10 years old now was top the range back then you had to select an… Read more

actual address) and away I went, on screen speed and road sign speed Very accurate, even dropped to 40km through road works (at Denman) !!!! (never through it do that) changes 50/60/80/100 etc with-in meters of the signs that we tested, Came in very handy in spots I haven't been, just glancing at it ahead of where I'm going and getting to know what's ahead save me heaps of time on the trip. It does take some routes a bit different than where I was going as it would say the route is quicker ( but I knew a quicker way instead on one section that I had been before- but they all do that) and it does recheck and change to where you are going. Also works great, just as a back up when your touring, (not having any address set) The "Bing" alarm for when your over-speed defiantly fantastic, I could just watch the road and hear the "Bing" in the background when my average speed was over. (you can select the volume so its set where you want.) Very handy for the holiday season and keeping highway patrols that I saw on the road away! The longer I worked with it the more I like it, Along side my tablet with Hema maps together they made my trip easier and more exciting. The Route Bar on the right hand side came in handy letting me know what's up ahead like fuel stops etc, also has the time and arrival time, which we also tested an it was with in a few minutes of when it first said at the start of the trips, (of-course if you stop or get helled up the time will very and adjust accordingly) The only thing I would say is- which I hated at the start , its got a Matt screen not a gloss, so unless you have it pointed straight towards you its very hard to see. I checked and my screen brightness was at max, compared to my old Mio GPS its not as bright, and the matt screen deadens the screen, I did however move the GPS so it faced me instead of the centre of the Twin cab ute, then it was ok. But if Tom Tom could fix that it would be 5 stars. Over all very easy to use and it worked as it should. Good price for what you get ( it is on the lower to mid end of the GPS prices).

Not the best GPS – I purchased the Tom Tom Start 62 about twelve months ago. The device has now failed. The power supply can not maintain contact. The suction cap fails to stick to anything. The device barely lasted 12 months before it became useless.

Good basic gps – Easy to set up. Easy to view maps. The voice direction could be louder and the maps need an update but all in all a good basic gps for those of us who want a good first buy. The manual is virtually non existent but not needed anyway. Very happy with it.

Usually better than nothing – The 'Start 42' was a replacement for an early model Tom Tom, stolen from my car. Really liked the earlier one. This new one however, not my favorite. It's slower, has a more fiddly menu, and occasionally presents a screen full of electronic 'hash'. It possibly has an overloaded CPU for the job. The best feature is the free maps, delivered by a… Read more

clunky, fussy 'My Connect'. Battery life is remarkably brief. Needs to stay plugged in.

The device works, but only slightly better than stopping and using a street directory book.

Expected so much more! – Upgraded to this as my XXL was seriously out of date and wanted a new unit with lifetime maps. Loved the XXL so stuck with TomTom expecting a superior product. Unfortunately this unit fails on all fronts. It is very slow, painfully so. The dialogue is rubbish and simple things are either extremely painful on not available (e.g. go to an address… Read more

and add a waypoint or route via a street). The router is terrible sometimes sending me to the wrong end of street to turn-around and then drive past my entry point. And worse of all the current maps are years out-of-date, I live in Perth WA which has many changes but freeway updates completed many years ago are still not available - forget any suburbs more than at least 3 years old. Speed zones are obviously way off but presumably that's because the maps are so far out-of-date.

Useless - can't connect – I've just waster some 4 hours trying to connect the Start 52 to Tomtom's My Drive Connect without success. First, it told me a dll file was missing. Installed that, then tried again. Message "unable to start correctly" kept appearing every time I tried to start it. Tomtom support is non-existant. Just looking t the forums, it seems EVERY tomtom… Read more

customer has problems. I have re-packed the GPS and am returning it for a refund.

Simply crap !!! – Purchased for my son after I was "then" happy with my via 255 and its "lifetime map updates" ,but the newer model has always been trouble the screen image is barely visible and when mounted next to my 255 completely inferior, also just shuts down when driving even when plugged in, have spoken to TOMTOM so many ,I have now just given up.And now… Read more

TOMTOM have has ended the lifetime maps guarantee for my 255,as lifetime for TOMTOM equals 5 years, can only say a crap company that reneged on its promises.

Performance is OK, however the software update is buggy. Not recommended – The positives: On road performance is fine. Maps quality is OK. Comes with free map updates. AU, NZ, South East Asia. Fixed speed cameras warning included (with limited time update). The problems: The screen was dark and unresponsive after 2 months usage. Warranty claim was smooth though. Software update was clumsy and not always working.… Read more

The software app said "Device not connected". Restarted the app and the GPS unit, no luck. Re-installed the app with the latest version, no luck. After 5% progress, the update just stopped and said the GPS is not connected. Only had one instance where the update was working. Hopeless and not recommended. The reason buying this GPS is to travel outback to remote areas where mobile reception is sometimes poor.

good – It's a generally good product. I bought it from JB-hifi and it's worth its price. Sometimes it might be lag out, the current place is wrong and the route is not always the best. These case hardly happen. In general, i like this device. Small, not so slow and works well.

OK for the child in you – I try to be positive in my reviews and I really did try with this. The biggest negative aspect is Tom Tom's truly appalling service department. The Start 52 is the larger screen version of what I assume is Tom Tom's current entry level. For $135 from Officeworks it is an easy and cheap way to get guidance in the car. (It is not a patch on my… Read more

9-year old IQ Routes which died big time - but yer pays yer money and yer get what yer pay for). What I did not pay for is the stream of idiot emails I got back after making a simple enquiry. Some character called Mayur D simply cannot read, or more likely, scans the enquiry, sees a key word like "camera" and replies with a ill-considered, stock email for what he THINKS I am asking about. If any one out there is interested, (except Tom Tom who clearly are not) all I want to know is how to kill the voice and keep the audible camera warnings. Every reply I get is for the other way round. Apart from that the Start 52 will do for now. Best aspect: the screen has improved muchly in nine years. Worst aspect: along with everything else in the world, the generations are getting more stupid. Nine years ago the IQ asked "Do you want to avoid toll road, yes or no?" Easy, even a politician could answer it. This new thing renders War And Peace compact by comparison with more keystrokes, confusing logic and cute patronising phrases like "Let's Go" when "Start" would be both correct and plain English. I almost expect a paperclip to appear asking, "It looks as though you are trying to go somewhere, Dude." And don't rely on the tap-screen to work consistently, or at all. You really do need to stop the car . . . preferably outside Tom Tom's office to instruct them how to speak to grown ups.
