TomTom GO50 / GO60

Would never buy a TomTom again – Have had two TomToms. The first literally had me driving around in circles. Also, refused to work after an update. Had to reformat and reload operating system and buy new maps (out of warranty, so no help from TomTom). Second one, voice instructions had to be coaxed to work, then after latest software upgrade the sound does not work at all. Only… Read more
bought the second one (brand new) because all other brands were sold out and it was reduced. Big mistake!
Steep learning curve to satisfaction – After years of trouble free service my TomTom Go730 finally died so naturally I stayed with the brand I trusted. Out of the box the GO60 appeared big and it is with a screen size like a computer tablet. The first problem was software. TomTom software always seemed 'buggy' , taking a lot of encouragement to communicate. This unit was no… Read more
different so it took a few tricks before my PC and it conversed.
I bought it some months ago. Did the updates and successfully used it. Put it away for two months then did a big update. Put it back in the car and frustration set in when it refused to display 'guidance view.' No information in the instructions on how to fix. Searched the net and found a blog full of useful information. Reset the unit as instructed and it worked, albeit losing all my previously stored data. Took the opportunity to personalise the unit as to voice, colours, maps etc.
After a week touring I am very pleased. If I made a wrong turn it brought me back quickly. The annunciation is clear and all so called safety cameras were found. Maps, elapsed times, travelling speed all accurate and only once did it momentarily lose signal. On this point, twice it was slow to realise a turn close to a previous turn which I believe is a function of the satellite tracking. I've read domestic GPS's need 50 metres.
Overall it was brilliant at finding the fastest route through unfamiliar territory and driving to 'Points of Interest.' In familiar towns it found a faster route to the highway.
I fitted an anti-glare hood which greatly improves image clarity.. I would like sharper colours like the Go730 had and found the colour yellow best for the driving route. The side bar graphic is perfect to see at a glance distance and times. The mount is robust and stayed on the screen across rough unpaved roads. The unit can be slid of its mount for security.
I really like this unit. It represents a big improvement over the GO730. Other reviewers have had nothing but trouble. I can't explain why mine works brilliantly in comparison.
This device and TomTom sell rubbish, the unit has never ever worked properly – I bought this navigator March 2015, I contacted customer support in the first week for assistance with many problems from the first week. Basic problems included PM instead of AM and in the afternoon it read AM instead of PM? I couldn't change the settings, customer support informed me that something was wrong with their satellite and they were in… Read more
the process of fixing it, that was nearly a year a go! They said the clock problem won't affect the function of the unit. Customer service would not assist in pairing the device with our iPhone, they just said "read your manual". My navigator has every possible glitch, it re-directs me to home if I'm going in the opposite direction, it takes me on many incorrect routes. This dumb crapy device, always states that there is traffic congestion ahead and when I try an alternative route, the navigator keeps bringing back to the original route. I could never choose toll routes because the navigator just functions on its own, didn't matter what.
This is a piece of rubbish, a complete waste of money, even my Navman which was 5 years old worked better!
NEVER AGAIN WILL I USE A TOMTOM!!
Wish I bought the Garmin! – I bought this because I work on the road and it was recommended by store staff.. I need to get myself around the city and suburbs. I have had it back to the store twice. Once because the giro appears to be upside down. It constantly tells me that the address is on the left when it is actually on the right. This is extraordinarily annoying and I… Read more
have threatened to hurl it out the window on Many occasions. The second time was because it kept freezing and wouldn't power off until the battery ran flat. To say I hate this appliance would be a understatement!!!
One of the other things I don't like is how it doesn't give you enough warning of a upcoming turn or exit. It basically lets you know of these when you are just about upon it. This has been very dangerous at times when I have had to try to get in the right lane to perform the turn. It has pretty 3D graphics for the city but if it can't help me navigate it, it is practically useless.
I recently had a hire care and had the use of a Garmin GPS. It was like day and night in comparison. It gave me heaps of warning and also told which lane to be in for the upcoming turns and exits. I wish I bought one of these.
If you buy one of these it is as effective as throwing your money out the window.
BAD Unit – We had the previous model tom tom START which was pretty good. This new unit is hopeless. If we could return it we would. The MENU is messy and rarely works. The voice command NEVER works and always says 'not found'. The unit has trouble doing updates on our computer. Often the street comes up with not found? Next time we would try Garmin or… Read more
Navman as we regard this GPS as hopeless sadly. You must get the suburb right also. So if it is 'Oakleigh East' and you put in just Oakleigh it says 'Not Found'
Working great. Nice features. Mapshare not as good as stated – Bought this for a bargain price. Very responsive. Great search screen which checks points of interest as well as addresses. The connection on Bluetooth to the phone was easy and it notifies me of traffic problems so I can route around them. 3D screen is good. Have had no issues with sun on screen. Speed limits change in school zones at correct… Read more
times. There are always updates coming through mapshare so it can only get better. Some of the speed limits were not correct and you have the option to correct them on the gps or on the computer at home.
I chose it over the Garmin due to price and reliability. I like the way it gives you the destination on the right or left.
I have not been disappointed.
I've found that when the Battery finally dies in a year and a bit, the unit goes into a bootloop and the batteries are not easily sourced online. Let's hope the Garmin unit in the mail is better.
Not recommended – Bought last week to replace old Model One. Nice big screen and free map updates for "life". when setting up was unable to change the default time; supposedly should update from satellites. Did not happen. Looked for my road speed vs. the posted limits - not there. Contacted support and was advised that this feature is "not available at this… Read more
time".
Both of these features are important when travelling so will be returning the item to the store. Why would a new product not have these basic features on the original?
Tested it out driving home from work - tried to divert travel onto main road via give way signs to busy highway rather than let me use the arterial road which is a straight run. Totally illogical.
Buyer Beware always.
Not to bad – I purchased the TomTom 50 last year from JB Hi-Fi, and like the below poster (Mark) I was advised by the salesperson to go with this one over the equivalent Navman (he was probably on a commission to do so). Overall I think it's a pretty good unit, but like Mark said (and I had to laugh) it does have 'favourite commands' it likes saying. It… Read more
notifies early and on time...have had one off glitches where it was delayed and told me to turn right when I had already gone 5 metres past the turn off point. The speed camera, red light camera and fixed camera warnings are superb (for me anyway). Exactly on time and it gets every single one. The freeway information feedback is also superb...accurate mapping with lane markings etc. Excellent real life 3d mapping of surrounding areas. The only issue I've had is that sometimes it will take me on a detour (or what I think is the longer route) towards paid tollways. I don't know if GPS companies have done deals with governments in an attempt to get more money out of car users. The voice command is a handy option as well. Above all a good unit with lots of features considering its priced at around $180.
Verdict - Worth the money considering it has more features than more expensive GPS systems. All the features are excellent. While there are better units around this will do the job adequately....3.5 out of 5 stars.
Pro's - speed/red/fixed camera feature is superb. Great 3d graphics...good freeway accuracy...good voice command feature.
Con's - one off glitches can ok and sometimes it may attempt to take you through tollways when not necessary.
This GPS is useless and Dangerous – I bought a TomTom Go 50 about a year ago as my Garmin finally died on me. I bought this brand because of a salesmans advice. Boy was he wrong. This thing is DANGEROUS. Very poor directions given and you need a co-pilot when you drive so this person can interpret what this device wants you to do. For example, when I was holidaying in Victoria (a… Read more
state I don't know that's why I bought a GPS) I got instructions as "Turn towards Cranbourne". Now that's ok if I knew where Cranbourne was. Next it has this tendency to give this direction "Drive straight on" so you do, it repeats this a few times. But then all of a sudden it says "Turn right". Now I'm doing 80 km's and it wants me to do a right turn on a 4 lane road and it's given me 50 metres of notice. It also loves to say this and I mean it really loves this "Get into your right lane". It says this all the time. So this is what happens you get directed to turn left onto a highway and told "Get into your right lane" so you do only for a 100 metres down the road to be told "Turn left" and it's an immediate turn left. The thing is dangerous. No wonder they can afford to give lifetime worth of free updates away because my lifetime will be shortened by this unit. My Garmin used to send my on some wild routes but never did it put my life in danger like this thing and it always prepared you for what correct lane, the next turn you'll be taking. As for free updates, yes the roads are updated for free but the fixed speed cameras you have to pay for.. They don't tell you this but I'm now letting sales people in on this little secret...
